Discrete Breathers in One-Dimensional Diatomic Granular Crystals
We report the experimental observation of discrete breathers in a
one-dimensional diatomic granular crystal composed of compressed elastic beads
that interact via Hertzian contact. We first characterize their effective
linear spectrum both theoretically and experimentally. We then illustrate
theoretically and numerically the modulational instability of the lower edge of
the optical band. This leads to the dynamical formation of long-lived breather
structures, whose families of solutions we compute throughout the linear
spectral gap. Finally, we observe experimentally such localized breathing modes
with quantitative characteristics that agree with our numerical results.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Gas phase polymerization of ethylene with a silica-supported metallocene catalyst: influence of temperature on deactivation
Ethylene was polymerized at 5 bar in a stirred powder bed reactor with silica supported rac-Me2Si[Ind]2ZrCl2/methylaluminoxane (MAO) at temperatures between 40°C and 80°C using NaCl as support bed and triethylaluminium (TEA) as a scavenger for impurities. For this fixed recipe and a given charge of catalyst. the average catalyst activity is reproducible within 10% for low temperatures. The polymerization rate and the rate of deactivation increase with increasing temperature. The deactivation could be modeled using a first order dependence with respect to the polymerization rate
Reliability and validity of a domain-specific last 7-d sedentary time questionnaire
Purpose: The objective of this study is to examine test-retest reliability, criterion validity, and absolute agreement of a self-report, last 7-d sedentary behavior questionnaire (SIT-Q-7d), which assesses total daily sedentary time as an aggregate of sitting/lying down in five domains (meals, transportation, occupation, nonoccupational screen time, and other sedentary time). Dutch (DQ) and English (EQ) versions of the questionnaire were examined.
Methods: Fifty-one Flemish adults (ages 39.4 +/- 11.1 yr) wore a thigh accelerometer (activPAL3 (TM)) and simultaneously kept a domain log for 7 d. The DQ was subsequently completed twice (median test-retest interval: 3.3 wk). Thigh-acceleration sedentary time was log annotated to create comparable domain-specific and total sedentary time variables. Four hundred two English adults (ages 49.6 +/- 7.3 yr) wore a combined accelerometer and HR monitor (Actiheart (R)) for 6 d to objectively measure total sedentary time. The EQ was subsequently completed twice (median test-retest interval: 3.4 wk). In both samples, the questionnaire reference frame overlapped with the criterion measure administration period. All participants had five or more valid days of criterion data, including one or more weekend day.
Results: Test-retest reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient (95% CI)) was fair to good for total sedentary time (DQ: 0.68 (0.50-0.81); EQ: 0.53 (0.44-0.62)) and poor to excellent for domain-specific sedentary time (DQ: from 0.36 (0.10-0.57) (meals) to 0.66 (0.46-0.79) (occupation); EQ: from 0.45 (0.35-0.54) (other sedentary time) to 0.76 (0.71-0.81) (meals)). For criterion validity (Spearman rho), significant correlations were found for total sedentary time (DQ: 0.52; EQ: 0.22; all P <0.001). Compared with domain-specific criterion variables (DQ), modest-to-strong correlations were found for domain-specific sedentary time (from 0.21 (meals) to 0.76 (P < 0.001) (screen time)). The questionnaire generally overestimated sedentary time compared with criterion measures.
Conclusion: The SIT-Q-7d appears to be a useful tool for ranking individuals in large-scale observational studies examining total and domain-specific sitting
Intrinsic Energy Localization through Discrete Gap Breathers in One-Dimensional Diatomic Granular Crystals
We present a systematic study of the existence and stability of discrete
breathers that are spatially localized in the bulk of a one-dimensional chain
of compressed elastic beads that interact via Hertzian contact. The chain is
diatomic, consisting of a periodic arrangement of heavy and light spherical
particles. We examine two families of discrete gap breathers: (1) an unstable
discrete gap breather that is centered on a heavy particle and characterized by
a symmetric spatial energy profile and (2) a potentially stable discrete gap
breather that is centered on a light particle and is characterized by an
asymmetric spatial energy profile. We investigate their existence, structure,
and stability throughout the band gap of the linear spectrum and classify them
into four regimes: a regime near the lower optical band edge of the linear
spectrum, a moderately discrete regime, a strongly discrete regime that lies
deep within the band gap of the linearized version of the system, and a regime
near the upper acoustic band edge. We contrast discrete breathers in anharmonic
FPU-type diatomic chains with those in diatomic granular crystals, which have a
tensionless interaction potential between adjacent particles, and highlight in
that the asymmetric nature of the latter interaction potential may lead to a
form of hybrid bulk-surface localized solutions
How Hertzian solitary waves interact with boundaries in a 1-D granular medium
We perform measurements, numerical simulations, and quantitative comparisons
with available theory on solitary wave propagation in a linear chain of beads
without static preconstrain. By designing a nonintrusive force sensor to
measure the impulse as it propagates along the chain, we study the solitary
wave reflection at a wall. We show that the main features of solitary wave
reflection depend on wall mechanical properties. Since previous studies on
solitary waves have been performed at walls without these considerations, our
experiment provides a more reliable tool to characterize solitary wave
propagation. We find, for the first time, precise quantitative agreements.Comment: Proof corrections, ReVTeX, 11 pages, 3 eps (Focus and related papers

Emulsification in binary liquids containing colloidal particles: a structure-factor analysis
We present a quantitative confocal-microscopy study of the transient and
final microstructure of particle-stabilised emulsions formed via demixing in a
binary liquid. To this end, we have developed an image-analysis method that
relies on structure factors obtained from discrete Fourier transforms of
individual frames in confocal image sequences. Radially averaging the squared
modulus of these Fourier transforms before peak fitting allows extraction of
dominant length scales over the entire temperature range of the quench. Our
procedure even yields information just after droplet nucleation, when the
(fluorescence) contrast between the two separating phases is scarcely
discernable in the images. We find that our emulsions are stabilised on
experimental time scales by interfacial particles and that they are likely to
have bimodal droplet-size distributions. We attribute the latter to coalescence
together with creaming being the main coarsening mechanism during the late
stages of emulsification and we support this claim with (direct)
confocal-microscopy observations. In addition, our results imply that the
observed droplets emerge from particle-promoted nucleation, possibly followed
by a free-growth regime. Finally, we argue that creaming strongly affects
droplet growth during the early stages of emulsification. Future investigations
could clarify the link between quench conditions and resulting microstructure,
paving the way for tailor-made particle-stabilised emulsions from binary
liquids.Comment: http://iopscience.iop.org/0953-8984/22/45/455102
Experimental evidence of solitary wave interaction in Hertzian chains
We study experimentally the interaction between two solitary waves that
approach one to another in a linear chain of spheres interacting via the Hertz
potential. When these counter propagating waves collide, they cross each other
and a phase shift respect to the noninteracting waves is introduced, as a
result of the nonlinear interaction potential. This observation is well
reproduced by our numerical simulations and it is shown to be independent of
viscoelastic dissipation at the beads contact. In addition, when the collision
of equal amplitude and synchronized counter propagating waves takes place, we
observe that two secondary solitary waves emerge from the interacting region.
The amplitude of secondary solitary waves is proportional to the amplitude of
incident waves. However, secondary solitary waves are stronger when the
collision occurs at the middle contact in chains with even number of beads.
Although numerical simulations correctly predict the existence of these waves,
experiments show that their respective amplitude are significantly larger than
predicted. We attribute this discrepancy to the rolling friction at the beads
contacts during solitary wave propagation
