    On perturbations of Dirac operators with variable magnetic field of constant direction

    We carry out the spectral analysis of matrix valued perturbations of 3-dimensional Dirac operators with variable magnetic field of constant direction. Under suitable assumptions on the magnetic field and on the pertubations, we obtain a limiting absorption principle, we prove the absence of singular continuous spectrum in certain intervals and state properties of the point spectrum. Various situations, for example when the magnetic field is constant, periodic or diverging at infinity, are covered. The importance of an internal-type operator (a 2-dimensional Dirac operator) is also revealed in our study. The proofs rely on commutator methods.Comment: 12 page

    Interval valued (\in,\ivq)-fuzzy filters of pseudo BLBL-algebras

    We introduce the concept of quasi-coincidence of a fuzzy interval value with an interval valued fuzzy set. By using this new idea, we introduce the notions of interval valued (\in,\ivq)-fuzzy filters of pseudo BLBL-algebras and investigate some of their related properties. Some characterization theorems of these generalized interval valued fuzzy filters are derived. The relationship among these generalized interval valued fuzzy filters of pseudo BLBL-algebras is considered. Finally, we consider the concept of implication-based interval valued fuzzy implicative filters of pseudo BLBL-algebras, in particular, the implication operators in Lukasiewicz system of continuous-valued logic are discussed

    A sweet deal? Sugarcane, water and agricultural transformation in Sub-Saharan Africa

    Globally, the area of sugarcane is rising rapidly in response to growing demands for bioethanol and increased sugar demand for human consumption. Despite considerable diversity in production systems and contexts, sugarcane is a particularly ā€œhigh impactā€ crop with significant positive and negative environmental and socio-economic impacts. Our analysis is focused on Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), which is a critical region for continued expansion, due to its high production potential, low cost of production and proximity, and access, to European markets. Drawing on a systematic review of scientific evidence, combined with information from key informants, stakeholders and a research-industry workshop, we critically assess the impacts of sugarcane development on water, soil and air quality, employment, food security and human health. Our analysis shows that sugarcane production is, in general, neither explicitly good nor bad, sustainable nor unsustainable. The impacts of expansion of sugarcane production on the environment and society depend on the global political economy of sugar, local context, quality of scheme, nature of the production system and farm management. Despite threats from climate change and forthcoming changes in the trade relationship with the European Union, agricultural development policies are driving national and international interest and investment in sugarcane in SSA, with expansion likely to play an important role in sustainable development in the region. Our findings will help guide researchers and policy makers with new insights in understanding the situated environmental and social impacts associated with alternative sugar economy models, production technologies and qualities of management

    A Synthetic Approach to Cold Presure Welding on Cogged Surfaces

    Pressure welding on cogged surfaces represents a new technological variant of the cold welding. The components that are made from a material with higher plasticity (aluminium, lead etc.), having flat surfaces, are pressed on or between the harder material components (copper, brass, carbon/stainless steel, titanium, etc.) that have cogged surfaces. The main particularity of this technique is to achieve an appropriate joint by deforming only the component with higher plasticity. Due to the low degree of deformation needed, reduced pressure forces are applied in comparison with the classical cold pressure welding. The welding in isolated catching nodes is achieved by gripping, while the aluminium is gliding on the flanks of the teeth. The tensile strength of the joint is relatively low reaching up to 10% of the aluminium part, but can be improved by applying a heat treatment. Welded joints were made in various combinations, resulting in bimetallic or multilayered workpieces. Due to the negligible contact resistance, these joints can be appropriately used for applications in the electrotechnical field

    Therapeutic Considerations Related to Finasteride Administration in Male Androgenic Alopecia and Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia

    Finasteride has been used extensively until now as a relative efficient therapeutic option for male androgenic alopecia and benign prostatic hyperplasia. Unfortunately, over time several concerns appeared regarding the frequency and magnitude of adverse effects, which in some cases have been even irreversible. Herein we review the recent literature on this topic, trying to clarify the current safety profile of Finasteride for these two therapeutic indications. We concluded that Finasteride could be retained as a therapeutic approach for male androgenic alopecia, based on two important reasons. First, a synergistic action between a partial inhibitor of 5Ī±-reductase (Finasteride) and another compound (like Minoxidil) are preferable to a complete suppression of 5Ī±-reductase (see Dutasteride), in order to preserve the important physiological roles of dihydrotestosterone. Second, Finasteride side effects can currently be addressed in part prior to the onset of the therapy, by using information about the patient such as hand preference and sexual orientation to predict the risk of adverse effects

    Magnetospheric lion roars

    International audienceThe Equator-S magnetometer is very sensitive and has a sampling rate normally of 128 Hz. The high sampling rate for the first time allows detection of ELF waves between the ion cyclotron and the lower hybrid frequencies in the equatorial dawnside magnetosphere. The characteristics of these waves are virtually identical to the lion roars typically seen at the bottom of the magnetic troughs of magnetosheath mirror waves. The magnetospheric lion roars are near-monochromatic packets of electron whistler waves lasting for a few wave cycles only, typically 0.2 s. They are right-hand circularly polarized waves with typical amplitudes of 0.5 nT at around one tenth of the electron gyrofrequency. The cone angle between wave vector and ambient field is nearly always smaller than 1Ā°
