Transitions to Nematic states in homogeneous suspensions of high aspect ratio magnetic rods
Isotropic-Nematic and Nematic-Nematic transitions from a homogeneous base
state of a suspension of high aspect ratio, rod-like magnetic particles are
studied for both Maier-Saupe and the Onsager excluded volume potentials. A
combination of classical linear stability and asymptotic analyses provides
insight into possible nematic states emanating from both the isotropic and
nematic non-polarized equilibrium states. Local analytical results close to
critical points in conjunction with global numerical results (Bhandar, 2002)
yields a unified picture of the bifurcation diagram and provides a convenient
base state to study effects of external orienting fields.Comment: 3 Figure

Interdisciplinary Student Competition for California Polytechnic State University - San Luis Obispo
Cal Poly has a reputation for producing some of the best qualified graduates in their respective fields of study. While this is very important, curricular activities involving collaboration between students within the same college are limited (excluding same major). Beyond that, collaboration opportunities across colleges are even more rare. When graduates enter the workforce, many are thrust into highly collaborative environments across various disciplines. Industry professionals have shown a strong desire for young people who have had exposure to realistic problems and experience working with other professions outside of their own field of expertise. The question needing answering is, would an interdisciplinary competition benefit students & industry? Beyond that, are students interested in such a competition? Three separate surveys were sent out to Cal Poly students. One survey going to each of the targeted colleges. The findings show that students recognize the benefit a competition like this would provide to themselves and the industry. The results also show that the majority of students are interested in such a competition

Kink Chains from Instantons on a Torus
We describe how the procedure of calculating approximate solitons from
instanton holonomies may be extended to the case of soliton crystals. It is
shown how sine-Gordon kink chains may be obtained from CP1 instantons on a
torus. These kink chains turn out to be remarkably accurate approximations to
the true solutions. Some remarks on the relevance of this work to Skyrme
crystals are also made.Comment: latex 17 pages, DAMTP 94-7
Relativistic calculation of the triton binding energy and its implications
First results for the triton binding energy obtained from the relativistic
spectator or Gross equation are reported. The Dirac structure of the nucleons
is taken into account. Numerical results are presented for a family of
realistic OBE models with off-shell scalar couplings. It is shown that these
off-shell couplings improve both the fits to the two-body data and the
predictions for the binding energy.Comment: 5 pages, RevTeX 3.0, 1 figure (uses epsfig.sty
