Suramin inhibits the early effects of PLA(2) neurotoxins at mouse neuromuscular junctions: a twitch tension study
Several phospholipase A(2) (PLA(2)) neurotoxins from snake venoms can affect acetylcholine release at the neuromuscular junction. In isolated nerve-muscle preparations three distinct phases have been described for this phenomenon: An initial transient decrease in twitch tension; a second facilitatory phase during which twitch height is greater than control twitch height; and the last phase which causes a reduction in twitch height that finally results in paralysis. Suramin has been reported to inhibit the toxic effects of β-bungarotoxin and another PLA(2) neurotoxin, crotoxin in vitro and in vivo. We have further examined the effects of suramin on the three phases of the effects of the presynaptic PLA(2) neurotoxins β-bungarotoxin, taipoxin and ammodytoxin on mouse phrenic nerve-hemidiaphragm preparations. When preparations were pre-treated with suramin (0.3mM), the early biphasic effects (depression followed by facilitation) were abolished, and the time taken for final blockade induced by β-bungarotoxin, taipoxin and ammodytoxin A was significantly prolonged. In contrast, suramin did not significantly affect the facilitation induced by the potassium channel blocking toxin dendrotoxin I when applied under the same conditions. In addition, application of 0.3mM suramin did not prevent the facilitatory actions of 3,4-diaminopyridine (3,4-DAP) and tetraethylammonium chloride (TEA). Overall, the mechanism whereby suramin reduces the effects of PLA(2) neurotoxins remains elusive. Since suramin reduces both enzyme-dependent and enzyme-independent effects of the toxins, suramin is not acting as a simple enzyme inhibitor. Furthermore, the observation that suramin does not affect actions of standard K(+) channel blockers suggests that suramin does not stabilise nerve terminals
A new kind of Lax-Oleinik type operator with parameters for time-periodic positive definite Lagrangian systems
In this paper we introduce a new kind of Lax-Oleinik type operator with
parameters associated with positive definite Lagrangian systems for both the
time-periodic case and the time-independent case. On one hand, the new family
of Lax-Oleinik type operators with an arbitrary as
initial condition converges to a backward weak KAM solution in the
time-periodic case, while it was shown by Fathi and Mather that there is no
such convergence of the Lax-Oleinik semigroup. On the other hand, the new
family of Lax-Oleinik type operators with an arbitrary
as initial condition converges to a backward weak KAM solution faster than the
Lax-Oleinik semigroup in the time-independent case.Comment: We give a new definition of Lax-Oleinik type operator; add some

Incidence and predisposing factors of cognitive disorders following off-pump coronary artery bypasses graft surgery
Patients and Methods: A total of 171 patients who had undergone off-pump CABG without any history of psychiatric disorders were enrolled. Samples were selected according to a purposive sampling method. The Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) questionnaire was given to each patients to assess the incidence of cognitive disorder during the first 24 hours of surgery in ICU. To compare creatinine, erythrocytes sedimentation rate, extubation time, and patients’ age between those with and those without postoperative cognitive disorder, independent-samplest test was employed. To compare two groups in terms of any history of diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia, and qualitative C-reactive protein (CRP), Chi square test was used.
Results: Results showed that 75% of patients had postoperative cognitive disorder. There was a significant association between the history of hypertension, CRP, and preoperative creatinine levels in both cognitive disorder and control groups.
Background: Cognitive disorder, which is a common problem for the hospitalized patients, is a fluctuating cognitive destruction that leads to the loss of consciousness. It is usually accompanied by increased mortality, prolonged hospital stay, and decreased rehabilitation. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine the risk factors associated with cognitive disorder after coronary artery bypasses graft surgery (CABG).
Conclusions: Given the significant prevalence of postoperative cognitive disorder and significant association between the history of hypertension, CRP, and preoperative creatinine and cognitive disorder, the detection of patient’s clinical symptoms may improve diagnosis, treatment, and even prevention of cognitive disorder. © 2014, Iranian Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine (ISRAPM); Published by Kowsar
Pseudographs and Lax-Oleinik semi-group: a geometric and dynamical interpretation
Let H be a Tonelli Hamiltonian defined on the cotangent bundle of a compact
and connected manifold and let u be a semi-concave function defined on M. If E
(u) is the set of all the super-differentials of u and (\phi t) the Hamiltonian
flow of H, we prove that for t > 0 small enough, \phi-t (E (u)) is an exact
Lagrangian Lipschitz graph. This provides a geometric
interpretation/explanation of a regularization tool that was introduced by
P.~Bernard to prove the existence of C 1,1 subsolutions
Neutral gas in Lyman-alpha emitting galaxies Haro 11 and ESO 338-IG04 measured through sodium absorption
Context. The Lyman alpha emission line of galaxies is an important tool for
finding galaxies at high redshift, and thus probe the structure of the early
universe. However, the resonance nature of the line and its sensitivity to dust
and neutral gas is still not fully understood.
Aims. We present measurements of the velocity, covering fraction and optical
depth of neutral gas in front of two well known local blue compact galaxies
that show Lyman alpha in emission: ESO 338-IG 04 and Haro 11. We thus test
observationally the hypothesis that Lyman alpha can escape through neutral gas
by being Doppler shifted out of resonance.
Methods. We present integral field spectroscopy from the GIRAFFE/Argus
spectrograph at VLT/FLAMES in Paranal, Chile. The excellent wavelength
resolution allows us to accurately measure the velocity of the ionized and
neutral gas through the H-alpha emission and Na D absorption, which traces the
ionized medium and cold interstellar gas, respectively. We also present
independent measurements with the VLT/X-shooter spectrograph which confirm our
results.
Results. For ESO 338-IG04, we measure no significant shift of neutral gas.
The best fit velocity is -15 (16) km/s. For Haro 11, we see an outflow from
knot B at 44 (13) km/s and infalling gas towards knot C with 32 (12) km/s.
Based on the relative strength of the Na D absorption lines, we estimate low
covering fractions of neutral gas (down to 10%) in all three cases.
Conclusions. The Na D absorption likely occurs in dense clumps with higher
column densities than where the bulk of the Ly-alpha scattering takes place.
Still, we find no strong correlation between outflowing neutral gas and a high
Lyman alpha escape fraction. The Lyman alpha photons from these two galaxies
are therefore likely escaping due to a low column density and/or covering
fraction.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figure
Gas and stellar dynamics in NGC 1068. Probing the galactic gravitational potential
We present Sauron 2D spectrography of the central 1.5 kpc of the nearby Sey2
galaxy NGC1068, encompassing the well-known NIR inner bar. We have successively
disentangled the respective contributions of the ionized gas and stars, thus
deriving their 2D distribution and kinematics. The [OIII] and Hbeta emission
lines exhibit very different spatial distribution and kinematics, the latter
following inner spiral arms with clumps associated with star formation. Strong
inwards streaming motions are observed in both the Hbeta and [OIII] kinematics.
The stellar kinematics also exhibit clear signatures of a non-axisymmetric
tumbling potential, with a twist in both the velocity and h3 fields. We
re-examined the long-slit data of Shapiro et al (2003) using pPXF: a strong
decoupling of h3 is revealed, and the central decrease in h4 hinted in the
Sauron data is confirmed. These data also suggest that NGC1068 is a good
candidate for a so-called sigma-drop. We confirm the possible presence of two
pattern speeds. We also examine the stellar kinematics of bars formed in
N-body+SPH simulations built from axisymmetric initial conditions. These
successfully reproduce a number of properties observed in the 2D kinematics of
NGC1068, and the long-slit data, showing that the kinematic signature of the
NIR bar is imprinted in the stellar kinematics. The remaining differences
between the models and the observed properties are mostly due to the exclusion
of star formation and the lack of the primary large-scale oval/bar in the
simulations. These models suggest that the inner bar could drive a significant
amount of gas down to a scale of ~300 pc. This is consistent with the
interpretation of the sigma-drop in NGC1068 being the result of central gas
accretion followed by an episode of star formation.Comment: accepted for publication in MNRAS, 20 pages, 17 figures (high res

The rate of convergence of new Lax-Oleinik type operators for time-periodic positive definite Lagrangian systems
Assume that the Aubry set of the time-periodic positive definite Lagrangian
consists of one hyperbolic 1-periodic orbit. We provide an upper bound
estimate of the rate of convergence of the family of new Lax-Oleinik type
operators associated with introduced by the authors in \cite{W-Y}. In
addition, we construct an example where the Aubry set of a time-independent
positive definite Lagrangian system consists of one hyperbolic periodic orbit
and the rate of convergence of the Lax-Oleinik semigroup cannot be better than
