Developments of the pinned photodiode terahertz rectifier
This paper presents we presents a development of the structure of the pinned photodiode terahertz rectifier, in which the metal whisker of the antenna is separated from the semiconductor by a silane oxide layer, in order to reduce the surface defectiveness. The rectifies is the basic component of an image detection system based on the structure of actual CMOS image detectors. The structure combines a nano-antenna, fabricated on the top of a standard image sensor, the rectifier, and the readout electronics. The rectifier device proposed has vertical extension of some tenths of nanometers, can be created at the foot of the nano-whisker at the end of the terahertz antenna, above the storage well
Cervico-mediastinal schwannoma of the vagus nerve: resection with intraoperative nerve monitoring.
Schwannomas are usually benign, single,
encapsulated, slow-growing tumours originating from cranial
or spinal nerve sheaths. The vagus nerve involvement at
the mediastinal inlet is very uncommon. For anatomical
reasons, the resection of cervical and mediastinal schwannoma
of the vagus nerve has a high risk of vocal fold
paralysis. We describe the case of a 67-year-old female with
a cervico-mediastinal schwannoma of the vagus nerve that
we removed using the intraoperative neuromonitoring technique.
The patient presented with mild hoarseness and
complained of discomfort behind the jugular notch. Neck and
chest computerized tomography described a 35 9 30 mm
solid lesion behind the left clavi-sternal junction; preoperative
fine needle aspiration cytology revealed schwannoma.
Resection of the mass was performed with a cervical
approach and the vagus nerve tumour was completely
removed under continuous neuromonitoring (NIM-3
System), preserving the vagus and the recurrent laryngeal
nerve function. Pathology on the resected mass documented
A-type schwannoma with ‘‘ancient schwannoma’’ areas. The
intraoperative neurostimulation and neuromonitoring
approach for the resection of vagus schwannoma are recommended
because it may reduce the risk of injury to the
vagus and to the recurrent laryngeal nerve
Design, synthesis and biological activity of selective hCAs inhibitors based on 2-(benzylsulfinyl)benzoic acid scaffold
A large library of derivatives based on the scaffold of 2-(benzylsulfinyl)benzoic acid were synthesised and tested as atypical inhibitors against four different isoforms of human carbonic anhydrase (hCA I, II, IX and XII, EC 4.2.1.1). The exploration of the chemical space around the main functional groups led to the discovery of selective hCA IX inhibitors in the micromolar/nanomolar range, thus establishing robust structure-activity relationships within this versatile scaffold. HPLC separation of some selected chiral compounds and biological evaluation of the corresponding enantiomers was performed along with molecular modelling studies on the most active derivatives
Low-Complexity Downlink Channel Estimation in mmWave Multiple-Input Single-Output Systems
This paper tackles the problem of channel estimation in mmWave multiple-input single-output systems, where users are equipped with single-antenna receivers. By leveraging broadcast transmissions in the downlink channel, two novel low-complexity estimation approaches are devised, able to operate even in presence of a reduced number of transmit antennas or limited bandwidth. Numerical results show that the proposed algorithms provide accurate estimates of the channel parameters, achieving at the same time about 50% complexity reduction compared to existing approaches
Modeling and Measuring Thermodynamic and Transport Thermophysical Properties: A Review
The present review describes the up-to-date state of the evaluation of thermophysical prop erties (TP) of materials with three different procedures: modeling (also including inverse problems), measurements and analytical methods (e.g., through computing from other properties). Methods to measure specific heat and thermal conductivity are described in detail. Thermal diffusivity and
thermal effusivity are a combination of the previously cited properties, but also for these proper ties, specific measurement and calculation methods are reported. Experiments can be carried out in steady-state, transient, and pulse regimes. For modeling, special focus is given to the inverse methods and parameter estimation procedures, because through them it is possible to evaluate the thermophysical property, assuring the best practices and supplying the measurement uncertainty. It
is also cited when the most common data processing algorithms are used, e.g., the Gauss–Newton and Levenberg–Marquardt least squares minimization algorithms, and how it is possible to retrieve values of TP from other data. Optimization criteria for designing the experiments are also mentione
