In order to clear up the sensitivity of the nucleus-nucleus scattering to the nuclear matter distributions of exotic halo nuclei, we have calculated differential cross sections for elastic scattering of the 6^6He and 11^{11}Li nuclei on several nuclear targets at the energy of 0.8 GeV/nucleon with different assumed nuclear density distributions in 6^6He and 11^{11}Li.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures. Nuclear Radii of Unstable Nuclei

In the presented review we discuss the problem of extraction the parameters of nuclear matter and charge distribution in stable and unstable isotopes. A substantial amount of information on the nuclear radii and other distribution parameters in light exotic nuclei has been obtained from experiments on intermediate-energy nucleus-nucleus collisions. The analyses of these experiments is usually performed with the help of the Glauber Theory. We review the main assumptions the Glauber Theory and show how this theoretical approach is used to calculate reaction and interaction cross sections. We also show how radii of nuclear matter can be obtained from the analysis of the experimental data on reaction cross sections. In the provided analysis reaction cross sections were calculated in optical and rigid approximations of the Glauber Theory as well as using explicit expressions. Numerical calculations of Glauber's explicit expressions for reaction cross sections were done using Monte Carlo technique. Recent results of the precise measurements of charge radii of light exotic nuclei which were done using the laser-spectroscopy technique as well as the method of the investigation of the nuclear matter distributions in proton elastic scattering experiments in inverse kinematics are also discussed.Comment: 56 pages, 13 figure, to be published in International Journal of Modern Physics

Sensitivity of reaction cross sections to halo nucleus density distributions

In order to clear up the sensitivity of the nucleus--nucleus reaction cross sections σR\sigma_R to the nuclear matter distributions in exotic halo nuclei, we have calculated the values of σR\sigma_R for scattering of 6^6He, 11^{11}Li, and 19^{19}C nuclei on several nuclear targets at the energy of 0.8 GeV/nucleon. The calculations were performed in the "rigid target" approximation to the Glauber theory, different shapes of the nuclear density distributions in 6^6He, 11^{11}Li, and 19^{19}C being assumed.Comment: 13 PAGES, 6 FIGURES, Submitted to Physics of Atomic Nucle

Mechanism of Pion Production in alphaalphap Scattering at 1 GeV/nucleon

The one-pion and two-pion production in the p(alpha, alpha prime)X reaction at an energy of E{alpha} = 4.2 GeV has been studied by simultaneous registration of the scattered alpha particles and the secondary pion or proton. The obtained results demonstrate that the inelastic alpha-particle scattering on the proton at the energy of the experiment proceeds either through excitation and decay of Delta resonance in the projectile or through excitation in the target proton of the Roper resonance, which decays mainly on a nucleon and a pion or a nucleon and a sigma meson - system of two pions in the isospin I = 0, S-wave.Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures. Determination of Matter Surface Distribution of Neutron-rich Nuclei

We demonstrate that the matter density distribution in the surface region is determined well by the use of the relatively low-intensity beams that become available at the upcoming radioactive beam facilities. Following the method used in the analyses of electron scattering, we examine how well the density distribution is determined in a model-independent way by generating pseudo data and by carefully applying statistical and systematic error analyses. We also study how the determination becomes deteriorated in the central region of the density, as the quality of data decreases. Determination of the density distributions of neutron-rich nuclei is performed by fixing parameters in the basis functions to the neighboring stable nuclei. The procedure allows that the knowledge of the density distributions of stable nuclei assists to strengthen the determination of their unstable isotopes.Comment: 41 pages, latex, 27 figure

    Monte Carlo Eikonal Scattering

Monte Carlo evaluation is used to calculate heavy-ion elastic scattering including the center-of-mass correction and the Coulomb interaction.Angular distributions are presented for a number of nuclear pairs over a wide energy range using nucleon-nucleon scattering parameters taken from phase-shift analyses and densities from independent sources. A technique for the efficient expansion of the Glauber amplitude in partial waves is developed

Radiative corrections and parity nonconservation in heavy atoms

The self-energy and the vertex radiative corrections to the effect of parity nonconservation in heavy atoms are calculated analytically in orders Z alpha^2 and Z^2 alpha^3 ln(lambda_C/r_0), where lambda_C and r_0 being the Compton wavelength and the nuclear radius, respectively. The value of the radiative correction is -0.85% for Cs and -1.41% for Tl. Using these results we have performed analysis of the experimental data on atomic parity nonconservation. The obtained values of the nuclear weak charge, Q_W=-72.90(28)_{exp}(35)_{theor} for Cs, and Q_W=-116.7(1.2)_{exp}(3.4)_{theor} for Tl, agree with predictions of the standard model. As an application of our approach we have also calculated analytically dependence of the Lamb shift on the finite nuclear size.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

Measuring Double Parton Distributions in Nucleons at Proton-Nucleus Colliders

We predict a strong enhancement of multijet production in proton-nucleus collisions at collider energies, as compared to a naive expectation of a cross section A\propto A. The study of the process would allow to measure, for the first time, the double parton distribution functions in a nucleon in a model independent way and hence to study both the longitudinal and the transverse correlations of partons.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figure

The apparent Coulomb reacceleration of neutrons in electrodissociation of the deuteron

    Get PDF
We demonstrate that the final state pp-nn interaction in the reaction of electrodissociation of the deuteron at large Q2Q^{2} in a static external field leads to the apparent reacceleration of neutrons. The shift of the neutron velocity from the velocity of the deuteron beam is related to the quantum-mechanical forward-backward asymmetry of the missing momentum distribution in the 2H(e,ep)n^2H(e,e'p)n scattering.Comment: LATEX, 9 pages, 1 figure available from the authors on request, Juelich preprint KFA-IKP(TH)-1994-3
