    The use of a quartz microbalance based (QMB) electronic nose for feed traceability of fresh and cured fat of Cinta Senese pigs has been evaluated. Thirty-three pigs were fed different feeding during fattening: "three months chestnut" (3-CH), "1 month chestnut" (1-CH) "fed commercial feedstuff" (0-CH). Fresh fat and cured lard of each animal were analysed. Overall data set was analysed by factorial analysis to test if the instruments allowed a satisfactory pattern separation among groups. Afterwards, on the three factors generated by factorial analysis, a GLM procedure was applied to estimate effects such as: feeding type, operative temperature, day of analysis, order within day, layer of the subcutaneous fat. The results showed a clear separation according to feeding regimen in fresh fat only, especially between 1-CH and 0-CH, but also a strong effect of the other sources of variability. Concerning this, the date of analysis had a significant effect on each factor generated by factorial analysis that invalidated the discrimination obtained

    In vita performance and slaughter characteristics of Suffolk and Bergamasca lambs at 90 days of age

    The objective of the present study was to compare in vita performance and carcass characteristics of Bergamasca and Suffolk lambs of 90 days of age. Bergamasca (15) and Suffolk (15) male lambs, originated from single and twin births equally represented, were weighed twice a month. Lambs were slaughtered to evaluate post-mortem characteristics and EUROP conformation score. Suffolk and Bergamasca lambs of 90 days of age produced carcasses with good quality; Suffolk had more compact carcasses than Bergamasca lambs whereas they showed higher percentage of intermuscular fat deposit. The results suggested that the two breeds raised with the forage-based feeding system could produce carcasses of good quality

    Monitoring of fish species in the Lamone river: distribution and morphometric measures of the populations.

    Fish samplings were carried out monthly from spring to autumn during 2008, on the Lamone river and the Campigno stream by an electrofishing, in order to verify the presence of fish populations and the most common species represented. Barb, Barbus plebejus, Blageon, Leuciscus muticellus, Chub, Leuciscus cephalus, South European Nase, Chondrostoma genei were identified. A small population of Brown trout, Salmo trutta fario was also recognized. Barb is the most represented species in all the sites. The samplings highlight that Lamone river presented conditions suitable to fully guarantee the life of the fish populations

    Fast Simulation of Analog Circuit Blocks under Nonstationary Operating Conditions

    This paper proposes a black-box behavioral modeling framework for analog circuit blocks operating under small-signal conditions around non-stationary operating points. Such variations may be induced either by changes in the loading conditions or by event-driven updates of the operating point for system performance optimization, e.g., to reduce power consumption. An extension of existing data-driven parameterized reduced-order modeling techniques is proposed that considers the time-varying bias components of the port signals as non-stationary parameters. These components are extracted at runtime by a lowpass filter and used to instantaneously update the matrices of the reduced-order state-space model realized as a SPICE netlist. Our main result is a formal proof of quadratic stability of such Linear Parameter Varying (LPV) models, enabled by imposing a specific model structure and representing the transfer function in a basis of positive functions whose elements constitute a partition of unity. The proposed quadratic stability conditions are easily enforced through a finite set of small-size Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMI), used as constraints during model construction. Numerical results on various circuit blocks including voltage regulators confirm that our approach not only ensures the model stability, but also provides speedup in runtime up to 2 orders of magnitude with respect to full transistor-level circuits

    No positive effect of autologous platelet gel after total knee arthroplasty: A double-blind randomized controlled trial: 102 patients with a 3-month follow-up

    Background and purpose Activated platelets release a cocktail of growth factors, some of which are thought to stimulate repair. We investigated whether the use of autologous platelet gel (PG) in total knee arthroplasty (TKA) would improve wound healing and knee function, and reduce blood loss and the use of analgesics. Patients and methods 102 patients undergoing TKA were randomly assigned to a PG group (n 50) or to a control (C) group (n 52). The primary analysis was based on 73 participants (PG: 32; C: 41) with comparison of postoperative wound scores, VAS, WOMAC, knee function, use of analgesics, and the pre- and postoperative hemoglobin values after a follow-up of 3 months. 29 participants were excluded due to insufficient data.
