Chemoreceptor Sensitivity ‘in Women Mountaineering Trainees of Different Altitudes Inducted by Trekking to 4350 m

This study was conducted on women mountaineering trainees to evaluate the hypoxic and hypercapnic ventilatory responses, and the precise nature of changes in the sensitivity of chemoreceptors on induction by trekking to 4350 m. Two groups of women belonging to different ethnic origins and residents of different altitudes, ie, moderate-altitude women (MAWMongolians) and low-altitude women (LAW-Caucasians) were the subjects in this study. Tests of sensitivity to hypoxia and hypercapnia were carried out initially at 2100 m, then during 4 to7 days of sojourn at 4350 m following induction by trekking, and re-tested on return to 2 100 m. The results indicate that there is a significant difference (P c 0.05) of hypoxic ventilatory response in women of two different ethnic groups: Both hypoxic and hypercapnic ventilatory responses increased significantly (P < 0.05) on induction to high altitude. On descent, hypoxic values reverted back to pre-induction levels, whereas hypercapnic ventilatory response showed relatively higher values (P < 0.05)

Commensurate anisotropic oscillator, SU(2) coherent states and the classical limit

We demonstrate a formally exact quantum-classical correspondence between the stationary coherent states associated with the commensurate anisotropic two-dimensional harmonic oscillator and the classical Lissajous orbits. Our derivation draws upon earlier work of Louck et al [1973 \textit {J. Math. Phys.} \textbf {14} 692] wherein they have provided a non-bijective canonical transformation that maps, within a degenerate eigenspace, the commensurate anisotropic oscillator on to the isotropic oscillator. This mapping leads, in a natural manner, to a Schwinger realization of SU(2) in terms of the canonically transformed creation and annihilation operators. Through the corresponding coherent states built over a degenerate eigenspace, we directly effect the classical limit via the expectation values of the underlying generators. Our work completely accounts for the fact that the SU(2) coherent state in general corresponds to an ensemble of Lissajous orbits.Comment: 11 pages, Latex2e, iopart.cls, replaced with published versio

Coherent states for the hydrogen atom

We construct wave packets for the hydrogen atom labelled by the classical action-angle variables with the following properties. i) The time evolution is exactly given by classical evolution of the angle variables. (The angle variable corresponding to the position on the orbit is now non-compact and we do not get exactly the same state after one period. However the gross features do not change. In particular the wave packet remains peaked around the labels.) ii) Resolution of identity using this overcomplete set involves exactly the classical phase space measure. iii) Semi-classical limit is related to Bohr-Sommerfield quantization. iv) They are almost minimum uncertainty wave packets in position and momentum.Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures, minor change in language and journal reference adde

Search for binary black hole mergers in the third observing run of Advanced LIGO-Virgo using coherent WaveBurst enhanced with machine learning

    Get PDF
In this work, we use the coherent WaveBurst (cWB) pipeline enhanced with machine learning (ML) to search for binary black hole (BBH) mergers in the Advanced LIGO-Virgo strain data from the third observing run. We detect, with equivalent or higher significance, all gravitational-wave (GW) events previously reported by the standard cWB search for BBH mergers in the third GW Transient Catalog. The ML-enhanced cWB search identifies five additional GW candidate events from the catalog that were previously missed by the standard cWB search. Moreover, we identify three marginal candidate events not listed in third GW Transient Catalog. For simulated events distributed uniformly in a fiducial volume, we improve the sensitive hypervolume with respect to the standard cWB search by approximately 28% and 34% for the stellar-mass and intermediate mass black hole binary mergers respectively, detected with a false-alarm rate less than 1/100 yr-1. We show the robustness of the ML-enhanced search for detection of generic BBH signals by reporting increased sensitivity to the spin-precessing and eccentric BBH events as compared to the standard cWB search. Furthermore, we compare the improvement of the ML-enhanced cWB search for different detector networks

Characterisations of Classical and Non-classical states of Quantised Radiation

A new operator based condition for distinguishing classical from non-classical states of quantised radiation is developed. It exploits the fact that the normal ordering rule of correspondence to go from classical to quantum dynamical variables does not in general maintain positivity. It is shown that the approach naturally leads to distinguishing several layers of increasing nonclassicality, with more layers as the number of modes increases. A generalisation of the notion of subpoissonian statistics for two-mode radiation fields is achieved by analysing completely all correlations and fluctuations in quadratic combinations of mode annihilation and creation operators conserving the total photon number. This generalisation is nontrivial and intrinsically two-mode as it goes beyond all possible single mode projections of the two-mode field. The nonclassicality of pair coherent states, squeezed vacuum and squeezed thermal states is analysed and contrasted with one another, comparing the generalised subpoissonian statistics with extant signatures of nonclassical behaviour.Comment: 16 pages, Revtex, One postscript Figure compressed and uuencoded Replaced, minor changes in eq 4.30 and 4.32. no effect on the result
