    Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Extraction of Southern Pine and Ponderosa Pine

    Pine wood and bark were extracted with supercritical (SC) carbon dioxide under various experimental conditions. The extractive yields ranged from 20-60% relative to the total diethyl ether extractive content. The yields were dependent on temperature, pressure, particle size, and fluid to wood ratio. The addition of ethanol to bark particles prior to SC CO2 extraction produced higher yields of extracts relative to extractions without the addition of ethanol. Gas chromatographic (GC) analysis of selected SC carbon dioxide extracts revealed that the concentration of resin acids, as well as the yield of pure abietic acid, increased with temperature at constant pressure. Fatty acids were more soluble in SC carbon dioxide relative to diethyl ether. The concentration of fatty acids in SC carbon dioxide extracts did not appear to follow definite trends. In addition, observation of the wood particles with scanning electron microscope (SEM) revealed that the supercritical extraction process did not appear to significantly alter the wood surface structure

    The Origin of the Dust Arch in the Halo of NGC 4631: An Expanding Superbubble?

    We study the nature and the origin of the dust arch in the halo of the edge-on galaxy NGC 4631 detected by Neininger & Dumke (1999). We present CO observations made using the new On-The-Fly mapping mode with the FCRAO 14m telescope, and find no evidence for CO emission associated with the dust arch. Our examination of previously published HI data shows that if previous assumptions about the dust temperature and gas/dust ratio are correct, then there must be molecular gas associated with the arch, below our detection threshold. If this is true, then the molecular mass associated with the dust arch is between 1.5 x 10^8 M(sun)and 9.7 x 10^8 M(sun), and likely towards the low end of the range. A consequence of this is that the maximum allowed value for the CO-to-H_2 conversion factor is 6.5 times the Galactic value, but most likely closer to the Galactic value. The kinematics of the HI apparently associated with the dust arch reveal that the gas here is not part of an expanding shell or outflow, but is instead two separate features (a tidal arm and a plume of HI sticking out into the halo) which are seen projected together and appear as a shell. Thus there is no connection between the dust "arch" and the hot X-ray emitting gas that appears to surround the galaxy Wang et al. (2001).Comment: 14 pages, including 4 figures.     Greenland turbot Reinhardtius hippoglossoides of the eastern Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands region

    Greenland turbot (Reinhardtius hippoglossoides) is a commercially important flounder in both the North Atlantic and North Pacific Oceans. In the latter, its center of abundance is in the eastern Bering Sea and along the Aleutian Islands chain where its population is managed as a single stock. Harvest levels in this region of the North Pacific during the period 1970-81 were comparable with those in the northwest and northeast Atlantic, with annual average catches of 53,000 metric tons (t). However, the catch in 1984 dropped sharply to 23,100 t, in part because of reduced quotas arising from concern over continued poor recruitment and declining catch-per-unit-effort. Recruitment failure was manifested in 1) the sharp decline in the catch rate of young flsh in annual research trawl surveys on the continental shelf of the eastern Bering Sea and 2) an increasing proportion of older and larger fish in the commercial catch from the continental slope of both the eastern Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands. The cause ofthe decline in recruitment could not be clearly identifled. Greenland turbot of the Bering Sea-Aleutian Islands share certain distributional features with the North Atlantic form. There is an apparent bathymetric change in the size and age of fish, with younger animals occupying continental shelf depths and the older individuals residing at depths of the continental slope. At shallow depths the young are exposed to temperature fluctuations, whereas older animals along the slope are exposed to relatively stable temperatures. A hypothesis is proposed for describing the temporal and spatial paths by which young animals reach the mature or spawning portion of the population. (PDF file contains 38 pages.
