Giant Resonances based on Unitarily Transformed Two-Nucleon plus Phenomenological Three-Nucleon Interactions

We investigate giant resonances of spherical nuclei on the basis of the Argonne V18 potential after unitary transformation within the Similarity Renormalization Group or the Unitary Correlation Operator Method supplemented by a phenomenological three-body contact interaction. Such Hamiltonians can provide a good description of ground-state energies and radii within Hartree-Fock plus low-order many-body perturbation theory. The standard Random Phase Approximation is applied here to calculate the isoscalar monopole, isovector dipole, and isoscalar quadrupole excitation modes of the 40Ca, 90Zr, and 208Pb nuclei. Thanks to the inclusion of the three-nucleon interaction and despite the minimal optimization effort, a reasonable agreement with experimental centroid energies of all three modes has been achieved. The role and scope of the Hartree-Fock reference state in RPA methods are discussed.Comment: v2: 11 pages, incl. 3 figures; extended discussion and outlook; to appear in J.Phys.

Multidimensional perfect fluid cosmology with stable compactified internal dimensions

Multidimensional cosmological models in the presence of a bare cosmological constant and a perfect fluid are investigated under dimensional reduction to 4-dimensional effective models. Stable compactification of the internal spaces is achieved for a special class of perfect fluids. The external space behaves in accordance with the standard Friedmann model. Necessary restrictions on the parameters of the models are found to ensure dynamical behavior of the external (our) universe in agreement with observations.Comment: 11 pages, Latex2e, uses IOP packages, submitted to Class.Quant.Gra

Spatially resolved photo ionization of ultracold atoms on an atom chip

We report on photo ionization of ultracold magnetically trapped Rb atoms on an atom chip. The atoms are trapped at 5 μ\mu K in a strongly anisotropic trap. Through a hole in the chip with a diameter of 150 μ\mu m two laser beams are focussed onto a fraction of the atomic cloud. A first laser beam with a wavelength of 778 nm excites the atoms via a two photon transition to the 5D level. With a fiber laser at 1080 nm the excited atoms are photo ionized. Ionization leads to depletion of the atomic density distribution observed by absorption imaging. The resonant ionization spectrum is reported. The setup used in this experiment is not only suitable to investigate BEC ion mixtures but also single atom detection on an atom chip

It goes with the territory: Ownership across spatial boundaries.

Previous studies have shown that people are faster to process objects that they own as compared with objects that other people own. Yet object ownership is embedded within a social environment that has distinct and sometimes competing rules for interaction. Here we ask whether ownership of space can act as a filter through which we process what belongs to us. Can a sense of territory modulate the well-established benefits in information processing that owned objects enjoy? In 4 experiments participants categorized their own or another person’s objects that appeared in territories assigned either to themselves or to another. We consistently found that faster processing of self-owned than other-owned objects only emerged for objects appearing in the self-territory, with no such advantage in other territories. We propose that knowing whom spaces belong to may serve to define the space in which affordances resulting from ownership lead to facilitated processing

With reference to two plays by Thomas Arzt (Die Neigung des Peter Rosegger, Totes Gebirge), this paper examines how attitudes in contemporary Austria are represented in literature. The analysis focuses on the playwright’s poetical originality in presenting conventional themes like homeland, social misery and the Austrian sense of apocalypse. It will be argued that the transformative playing with dramatic genres, intertextuality, significant idioms and local song material is in fact a farce exposing current circumstances and mentalities. With reference to two plays by Thomas Arzt (Die Neigung des Peter Rosegger, Totes Gebirge), this paper examines how attitudes in contemporary Austria are represented in literature.
