Unilateral Nevoid Telangiectasis: Report of Five Cases

Get PDF
Unilateral nevoid telangiectasia (UNT) is a rare cutaneous disorder characterized by superficial telangiectasias distributed unilaterally. UNT can be congenital or acquired. Acquired UNT may be seen during pregnancy, puberty, and in association with cirrhosis and hepatitis C. Besides, the disease has been reported in healthy individuals. In the etiology, elevated blood estrogen levels and/or increased estrogen and progesterone receptors in the involved skin are suggested to cause this disorder. Here, we present four male patients aged 26-33 years, without an identified underlying disease and an 18-year-old female hepatitis B carrier with diagnosis of acquired UNT. Since UNT is seen rarely, it is discussed in the light of the literature data

Objective:To demonstrate the histopathological effects of the long-term use of cromolyn sodium on healthy rat nasal mucosa using the light microscope. Methods:The animals were grouped according to the intranasal administered agents: first group (n=10), intranasal 10 µL saline administration; second group (n=10), intranasal 10 µL cromolyn sodium with the help of a micropipette for one month duration. Results:When we assessed mucosal edema and increased goblet cell number, there were no statistical differences between control and study groups (p>0.05). However, the assessment of decreased epithelial thickness and squamous metaplasia between control and study groups revealed significant differences (respectively: p=0.001, p=0.001; p<0.05). Also focal ciliary loss was statistically significant for the study group (p=0.001; p<0.01).Conclusion:Sodium cromoglycate, a cromolyn type of agent has been used for a long time in the treatment of allergic diseases. Cromolyns stabilize the mast cell membrane and inhibit secretion of histamine and other autacoids (leukotrienes, etc.). Therefore, prior to contact with the allergen, topical use of cromolyns gives good symptomatic, but is less effective after exposure to the allergens. In addition, their prophylactic efficacy starts after a few weeks of regular application. However, our study demonstrated that long-term use of this substance resulted in a rhinitis medicamentosa like effect on nasal mucosa

Trends in the number of patients with cutaneous melanoma and their Breslow thicknesses between 2000 and 2018: A tertiary hospital-based study in İstanbul

Background and Design: The global incidence of cutaneous melanoma is increasing. Breslow thickness has been reported to have decreased in recent years, in contrast to this increase. This study aims to determine annual changes in the number of diagnosed cutaneous melanoma cases and their Breslow thicknesses in our hospital. Materials and Methods: Pathology reports from cutaneous melanoma patients admitted to our hospital's dermatology clinic between 2000 and 2018 were reviewed retrospectively. Results: The study included 210 cases, 122 (58.1%) of which were male and 88 (41.9%) of which were female. The mean age of the cases was 61.08+-17.07. The year and the number of cases seen each year had a statistically significant positive correlation (p=0.003; ρ=0.640). The number of reported cases has risen over time. The year had a statistically significant negative correlation with case Breslow thicknesses (p<0.001; ρ=-0.292). The cases' Breslow thickness decreased over time. Conclusion: Our study found that as the incidence of cutaneous melanoma has increased, the Breslow thickness of cases diagnosed in recent years has decreased. These findings suggest that awareness of cutaneous melanoma has increased over time in the population served by our hospital, and the diagnostic methods and algorithms used by physicians have aided in earlier detection of the disease. However, there are still a significant number of thick cutaneous melanoma lesions, implying that more emphasis should be placed on awareness-raising activities, disease screening programs, and in-service training to detect these lesions earlier
