Checklist of the shore and epipelagic fishes of Tonga

    Get PDF
A checklist is given below of 1162 species of shore and epipelagic fishes belonging to 111 families that occur in the islands of Tonga, South Pacifie Ocean; 40 of these are epipelagic species. As might be expected, the fish fauna of Tonga is most similar to those of Samoa and Fiji; at least 658 species of the fishes found in Tonga are also known from Fiji and the islands of Samoa. Twelve species of shore fishes are presently known only from Tonga. Specimens of Tongan fishes are housed mainly in the fish collections of the National Museum ofNatural History, Washington D.C.; Bernice P. Bishop Museum, Honolulu; Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle, Paris; and the Australian Museum, Sydney. Native Tongan names offishes, when known, are presented afterspecies names

This thesis is dedicated to the analytical and numerical study of thermal convection of a binary fluid enclosed in a inclined cavity of large aspect ratio heated on its long walls by a constant heat flux. The originality of this work comes from the methodology used to solve this problem. An analytical solution, based on the hypothesis of a parallel and stationary flow, has been compared to a numerical procedure solving the bi-dimensional and temporal Navier-Stokes equations. The stability of the rest state, when this latter exists, has been studied via a linear stability analysis. The accordance between the three methods is found to be excellent. In a first time, the thermo gravitational columns have been studied. Three regimes have been found analytically and numerically. The possible existence of multiple solutions, parallel or not, has been demonstrated. The influence of the inclination of the cavity on compositional separation has been studied too. The Rayleigh-Bénard problem has been revisited. Three bifurcation scenarios, namely a pitchfork and a Hopf with a null critical wave number, and a Hopf with a non zero critical wave number, have been shown. The analytical solution has been verified on a large range of the governing parameters. Numerical simulations have revealed the existence of non stationary flows and localised convective states. Introducing a imperfection on the adiabaticity of the short walls, three types of parallel flow have been shown. The possibility of multiple solutions for a given set of the governing parameters has been demonstrated. The influence of the imperfection on bifurcations has been studied.ORSAY-PARIS 11-BU Sciences (914712101) / SudocSudocFranceF

The application of the Chebyshev-spectral method in transport phenomena

    No full text
Transport phenomena problems that occur in engineering and physics are often multi-dimensional and multi-phase in character.  When taking recourse to numerical methods the spectral method is particularly useful and efficient. The book is meant principally to train students and non-specialists  to use the spectral method for solving problems that model fluid flow in closed geometries with heat or mass transfer.  To this aim the reader should bring a working knowledge of fluid mechanics and heat transfer and should be readily conversant with simple concepts of linear algebra including spectral decomposition of matrices as well as solvability conditions for inhomogeneous problems.  The book is neither meant to supply a ready-to-use program that is all-purpose nor to go through all manners of mathematical proofs.  The focus in this tutorial is on the use of the spectral methods for space discretization, because this is where most of the difficulty lies. While time dependent problems are also of great interest, time marching procedures are dealt with by briefly introducing and providing a simple, direct, and efficient method. Many examples are provided in the text as well as numerous exercises for each chapter. Several of the examples are attended by subtle points which the reader will face while working them out. Some of these points are deliberated upon in endnotes to the various chapters, others are touched upon in the book itself
