Formation of plasma around a small meteoroid: 1. Kinetic theory
This article is a companion to Dimant and Oppenheim [2017] https://doi.org/10.1002/2017JA023963.This paper calculates the spatial distribution of the plasma responsible for radar head echoes by applying the kinetic theory developed in the companion paper. This results in a set of analytic expressions for the plasma density as a function of distance from the meteoroid. It shows that at distances less than a collisional mean free path from the meteoroid surface, the plasma density drops in proportion to 1/R where R is the distance from the meteoroid center; and, at distances much longer than the mean‐free‐path behind the meteoroid, the density diminishes at a rate proportional to 1/R2. End states, ladder compounds, and domain wall fermions
A magnetic field applied to a cross linked ladder compound can generate
isolated electronic states bound to the ends of the chain. After exploring the
interference phenomena responsible, I discuss a connection to the domain wall
approach to chiral fermions in lattice gauge theory. The robust nature of the
states under small variations of the bond strengths is tied to chiral symmetry

The multiple quantum NMR dynamics in systems of equivalent spins with the dipolar ordered initial state
The multiple quantum (MQ) NMR dynamics in the system of equivalent spins with
the dipolar ordered initial state is considered. The high symmetry of the MQ
Hamiltonian is used in order to develop the analytical and numerical methods
for an investigation of the MQ NMR dynamics in the systems consisting of
hundreds of spins from "the first principles". We obtain the dependence of the
intensities of the MQ NMR coherences on their orders (profiles of the MQ NMR
coherences) for the systems of spins. It is shown that these
profiles may be well approximated by the exponential distribution functions. We
also compare the MQ NMR dynamics in the systems of equivalent spins having two
different initial states, namely the dipolar ordered state and the thermal
equilibrium state in the strong external magnetic field.Comment: 11 pages 4 figure
The Effects of Negative Legacies on the Adjustment of Parentally Bereaved Children and Adolescents
This is a report of a qualitative analysis of a sample of bereaved families in which one parent died and in which children scored in the clinical range on the Child Behavior Check List. The purpose of this analysis was to learn more about the lives of these children. They were considered to be at risk of developing emotional and behavioral problems associated with the death. We discovered that many of these “high risk” children had a continuing bond with the deceased that was primarily negative and troubling for them in contrast to a comparison group of children not at risk from the same study. Five types of legacies, not mutually exclusive, were identified: health related, role related, personal qualities, legacy of blame, and an emotional legacy. Coping behavior on the part of the surviving parent seemed to make a difference in whether or not a legacy was experienced as negative
Epitaxial growth of Cu on Cu(001): experiments and simulations
A quantitative comparison between experimental and Monte Carlo simulation
results for the epitaxial growth of Cu/Cu(001) in the submonolayer regime is
presented. The simulations take into account a complete set of hopping
processes whose activation energies are derived from semi-empirical
calculations using the embedded-atom method. The island separation is measured
as a function of the incoming flux and the temperature. A good quantitative
agreement between the experiment and simulation is found for the island
separation, the activation energies for the dominant processes, and the
exponents that characterize the growth. The simulation results are then
analyzed at lower coverages, which are not accessible experimentally, providing

The Developmental Significance of Adolescent Romantic Relationships: Parent and Peer Predictors of Engagement and Quality at Age 15
From a longitudinal sample (n = 957; 49.9% male; 77.3% White/non-Hispanic) of participants studied from infancy through age 15, adolescents’ depth of engagement in, and quality of romantic relationships were predicted from early and contemporaneous parent–child interactive quality and peer social competence. High quality maternal parenting and peer experiences prior to and during adolescence tended to be negatively associated with the depth of engagement in this domain for the full sample, yet positively associated with the quality of adolescents’ romantic relationships for the sub-set of individuals currently dating at age 15. Results reconcile contrasting views of the origins of romantic relationship engagement and quality and the positive versus negative developmental salience of romantic relationships in adolescence
Radiation in Lorentz violating electrodynamics
Synchrotron radiation is analyzed in the classical effective Lorentz
invariance violating model of Myers-Pospelov. Within the full far-field
approximation we compute the electric and magnetic fields, the angular
distribution of the power spectrum and the total emitted power in the m-th
harmonic, as well as the polarization. We find the appearance of rather
unexpected and large amplifying factors, which go together with the otherwise
negligible naive expansion parameter. This opens up the possibility of further
exploring Lorentz invariance violations by synchrotron radiation measurements
in astrophysical sources where these amplifying factors are important.Comment: Presented at the Second Mexican Meeting on Theoretical and
