    Suzaku Observation of the Diffuse X-Ray Emission from the Open Cluster Westerlund 2: a Hypernova Remnant?

    We present the analysis of Suzaku observations of the young open cluster Westerlund 2, which is filled with diffuse X-ray emission. We found that the emission consists of three thermal components or two thermal and one non-thermal components. The upper limit of the energy flux of the non-thermal component is smaller than that in the TeV band observed with H.E.S.S. This may indicate that active particle acceleration has stopped in this cluster, and that the accelerated electrons have already cooled. The gamma-ray emission observed with H.E.S.S. is likely to come from high-energy protons, which hardly cool in contrast with electrons. Metal abundances of the diffuse X-ray gas may indicate the explosion of a massive star in the past.Comment: Accepted for publication in PAS

    The Variation of Gas Mass Distribution in Galaxy Clusters: Effects of Preheating and Shocks

    We investigate the origin of the variation of the gas mass fraction in the core of galaxy clusters, which was indicated by our work on the X-ray fundamental plane. The adopted model supposes that the gas distribution characterized by the slope parameter is related to the preheated temperature. Comparison with observations of relatively hot (~> 3 keV) and low redshift clusters suggests that the preheated temperature is about 0.5-2 keV, which is higher than expected from the conventional galactic wind model and possibly suggests the need for additional heating such as quasars or gravitational heating on the largest scales at high redshift. The dispersion of the preheated temperature may be attributed to the gravitational heating in subclusters. We calculate the central gas fraction of a cluster from the gas distribution, assuming that the global gas mass fraction is constant within a virial radius at the time of the cluster collapse. We find that the central gas density thus calculated is in good agreement with the observed one, which suggests that the variation of gas mass fraction in cluster cores appears to be explained by breaking the self-similarity in clusters due to preheated gas. We also find that this model does not change major conclusions on the fundamental plane and its cosmological implications obtained in previous papers, which strongly suggests that not only for the dark halo but also for the intracluster gas the core structure preserves information about the cluster formation.Comment: 17 pages, to be published in Ap

    We analyze the relations among central gas density, core radius, and temperature of X-ray clusters by plotting the observational data in the three-dimensional (logρ0\log \rho_0, logR\log R, and logT\log T) space and find that the data lie on a 'fundamental plane'. Its existence implies that the clusters form a two-parameter family. The data on the plane still has a correlation and form a band on the plane. The observed relation LXT3L_{\rm X} \propto T^3 turns out to be the cross section of the band perpendicular to the major axis, while the major axis is found to describe the virial density.     Somatosensory evoked potentials in acute renal failure: Effect of parathyroidectomy. Effects of acute renal failure (ARF) on somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP) were studied in rats. Cervical and cortical SEPs were measured both before and after bilateral ureteral ligation. A significant augmentation of amplitudes and an increase in latencies of the cortical SEP were observed in ARF. The peripheral nerve conduction velocities were unchanged. Serum parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels in uremic rats were significantly elevated after the bilateral ureteral ligation. In previously parathyroidectomized rats, the bilateral ureteral ligation had no effects on amplitudes of SEP or serum PTH levels

    Risk factors for cognitive dysfunction after coronary artery bypass graft surgery in patients with type 2 diabetes

    ObjectivesThe mechanisms of postoperative cognitive dysfunction in patients with diabetes after coronary artery bypass grafting are not fully understood. We sought to determine which type 2 diabetes–related factors contributed to postoperative cognitive dysfunction at 7 days and 6 months after coronary artery bypass grafting.MethodsOne hundred eighty patients with type 2 diabetes who were scheduled for elective coronary artery bypass grafting were studied. As a control group, 100 patients without diabetes mellitus matched for age, sex, and educational level were examined. Hemodynamic parameters (arterial and jugular venous blood gas values) were measured during cardiopulmonary bypass. All patients underwent a battery of neurologic and neuropsychologic tests the day before surgery, 7 days after surgery, and 6 months after surgery.ResultsAge (odds ratio 1.5, 95% confidence interval 1.3-1.8, P = .03), presence of hypertension (odds ratio 1.8, 95% confidence interval 1.3-2.0, P = .01), jugular venous oxygen saturation less than 50% time (odds ratio 1.5, 95% confidence interval 1.1-2.0, P = .045), presence of ascending aorta atherosclerosis (odds ratio 1.5, 95% confidence interval 1.1-2.6, P = .01), diabetic retinopathy (odds ratio 2.0, 95% confidence interval 1.3-3.0, P = .01), and insulin therapy (odds ratio 2.0, 95% confidence interval 1.3-3.0, P = .05), were associated with cognitive impairment at 7 days. Insulin therapy (odds ratio 2.0, 95% confidence interval 1.3-3.8, P = .01), diabetic retinopathy (odds ratio 1.3, 95% confidence interval 1.2-2.9, P < .01), and hemoglobin A1c (odds ratio 1.9, 95% confidence interval 1.3-3.1, P = .047) were associated with cognitive impairment at 6 postoperative months.ConclusionsInsulin therapy, diabetic retinopathy, and hemoglobin A1c were factors in cognitive impairment at 7 days and 6 months after coronary artery bypass grafting in patients with type 2 diabetes

    Clinical Utility of 4C Mortality Scores among Japanese COVID-19 Patients: A Multicenter Study

    Background: We analyzed data from COVID-19 patients in Japan to assess the utility of the 4C mortality score as compared with conventional scorings. Methods: In this multicenter study, COVID-19 patients hospitalized between March 2020 and June 2021, over 16 years old, were recruited. The superiority for correctly predicting mortality and severity by applying the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was compared. A Cox regression model was used to compare the length of hospitalization for each risk group of 4C mortality score. Results: Among 206 patients, 21 patients died. The area under the curve (AUC) (95% confidential interval (CI)) of the ROC curve for mortality and severity, respectively, of 4C mortality scores (0.84 (95% CI 0.76-0.92) and 0.85 (95% CI 0.80-0.91)) were higher than those of qSOFA (0.66 (95% CI 0.53-0.78) and 0.67 (95% CI 0.59-0.75)), SOFA (0.70 (95% CI 0.55-0.84) and 0.81 (95% CI 0.74-0.89)), A-DROP (0.78 (95% CI 0.69-0.88) and 0.81 (95% CI 0.74-0.88)), and CURB-65 (0.82 (95% CI 0.74-0.90) and 0.82 (95% CI 0.76-0.88)). For length of hospitalization among survivors, the intermediate- and high- or very high-risk groups had significantly lower hazard ratios, i.e., 0.48 (95% CI 0.30-0.76)) and 0.23 (95% CI 0.13-0.43) for discharge. Conclusions: The 4C mortality score is better for estimating mortality and severity in COVID-19 Japanese patients than other scoring systems

    Alfven Wave Amplification and Self-Containment of Cosmic-Rays Escaping from a Supernova Remnant

    We study the escape of cosmic-ray (CR) protons accelerated at a supernova remnant (SNR) by numerically solving a diffusion-convection equation from the vicinity of the shock front to the region far away from the front. We consider the amplifications of Alfven waves generated by the escaping CR particles and their effects on CR escape into interstellar medium (ISM). We find that the amplification of the waves significantly delays the escape of the particles even far away from the shock front (on a scale of the SNR). This means that the energy spectrum of CR particles measured through gamma-ray observations at molecular clouds around SNRs is seriously affected by the particle scattering by the waves.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRA

    Properties of the Brightest Cluster Galaxy and Its Host Cluster

    We investigate the relation between the properties of Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCGs) and those of their host clusters. To quantify the properties of cluster hot gas, we employ the parameter ZZ of the fundamental plane of X-ray clusters. It is found that the offset of the BCG from the peak of cluster X-ray emission is larger for smaller ZZ clusters. The parameter ZZ (not the redshift {\it z}), which mainly depends on virial density ρvir\rho_{\rm {vir}}, is considered to represent the formation epoch of a cluster. We thus consider that the offset of the BCG is correlated with the dynamical equilibrium state of its host cluster. On the contrary, no significant correlation is found between the absolute optical magnitude of the BCG and the parameter ZZ. If the extreme brightness of the BCG is mainly acquired in the course of cluster evolution by environmental effect, BCGs are expected to be brighter in large ZZ clusters. Our result is not consistent with this simplified view.
