Molecular Dynamics Simulation of Grain Boundary Formation and Migration in Silicon

Get PDF
Molecular dynamics simulation using Tersoff potential was carried out to investigate the formation and the migration of (010) AE5 twist boundary in silicon. Effects of carbon atoms on the grain boundary formation and the grain boundary migration were also investigated. Amorphous thin layers remained at the twist boundary even after crystallization, and changes in the thickness of this layers caused grain boundary migration. When carbon atoms were segregated at the twist boundary, these atoms prevented shrinkage of an amorphous thin layer, and the grain boundary migration was retarded. Precipitated carbon atoms within the grain produces a strain field and this strain field possibly became driving force for the grain boundary migration

Background – Feline gastrointestinal eosinophilic sclerosing fibroplasia (FGESF) presents as mass(es) associated with the gastrointestinal tract, mesentery, and abdominal lymph nodes.Hypothesis/Objectives – To report the clinicopathological findings, treatment, and outcome of cats with FGESF.Animals – Sixty client-owned cats diagnosed with FGESF. Methods – Retrospective review of medical records of cats with histopathologically confirmed FGESF. Results – The median age was 5.4 years (interquartile range [IQR] 3.3-8.9.); 30% were Domestic Shorthairs and 12% were Domestic Longhair cats, with the most prevalent pedigree breeds being Ragdolls (25%), Exotic Shorthair (10%) and Persian (8%) cats. The median duration of clinical signs was 90 days (IQR 17.5-247.0); the most common clinical signs were weight loss (60%), hyporexia/anorexia (55%), chronic vomiting (37%), lethargy (35%) and chronic diarrhea (27%). Masses were located in the small intestine (32%), stomach (27%), ileocolic junction (15%), colon (10%), lymph node (8%) and mesentery (8%) and 15% of cats had more than one mass. Eosinophilia was present in 50% and hypoalbuminemia in 28% of cats. The mass was removed surgically in 37% of cases. Most cats (98%) were treated with corticosteroids and 1 cat with antibiotics alone. The survival was not statistically different between cats treated with surgical resection and cats treated with medical therapy alone, 88% of the cats still alive at the time of writing. Conclusions and clinical importance – FGESF is an important differential diagnosis for abdominal masses in cats, and has a much better prognosis than previously reported. <br/

Fuzapladib in a randomized controlled multicenter masked study in dogs with presumptive acute onset pancreatitis

Get PDF
We read with interest the article by Steiner et al,1 that claims that administration of fuzapladib is safe and effective in reducing 2 clinical scores in dogs with acute pancreatitis (AP). We commend Steiner et al for their efforts in addressing a critical need in veterinary medicine. This letter, however, raises significant concerns regarding the methodology and interpretation of the study results

A novel missense PTEN mutation identified in a patient with macrocephaly and developmental delay

Phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN) plays an important role in tumor suppression. A germline mutation in the PTEN gene induces not only PTEN hamartoma tumor syndrome, including Cowden syndrome, but also macrocephaly/autism syndrome. Here, we describe a boy with macrocephaly/ autism syndrome harboring a novel missense heterozygous PTEN mutation, c.959T>C (p.Leu320Ser). Interestingly, a previously reported nonsense mutation resulting in p.Leu320X was found in Cowden syndrome patients. Our case may be suggestive of a genotype-phenotype correlation

A case of autism spectrum disorder with cleft lip and palate carrying a mutation in exon 8 of AUTS2

We report a patient with autism and cleft lip and palate carrying a de novo heterozygous AUTS2 mutation, c.1464_1467del ACTC (p.Tyr488*). Although the causal relationship between cleft lip and palate and this mutation is unclear, this case report may expand the clinical phenotype of AUTS2 syndrome

Efficacy of salvage therapies for advanced acral melanoma after anti-PD-1 monotherapy failure: a multicenter retrospective study of 108 Japanese patients

BackgroundAnti-programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1) monotherapy is one of the standard systemic therapies for advanced melanoma; however, the efficacy of salvage systemic therapies after PD-1 monotherapy failure (PD-1 MF), particularly in acral melanoma (AM), the main clinical melanoma type in Japanese patients, is unclear. This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of salvage systemic therapies in Japanese patients with AM after PD-1 MF.Patients and methodsThe study included 108 patients with advanced AM (palm and sole, 72; nail apparatus, 36) who underwent salvage systemic therapy at 24 Japanese institutions. We mainly assessed the objective response rate (ORR), progression-free survival (PFS), and overall survival (OS).ResultsThirty-six (33%) patients received ipilimumab, 23 (21%) received nivolumab and ipilimumab (nivo/ipi), 10 (9%) received cytotoxic chemotherapy, 4 (4%) received BRAF and MEK inhibitors (BRAFi/MEKi), and the remaining 35 (32%) continued with PD-1 monotherapy after disease progression. The ORRs in the ipilimumab, nivo/ipi, cytotoxic chemotherapy, and BRAFi/MEKi groups were 8, 17, 0, and 100%, respectively. The nivo/ipi group showed the longest OS (median, 18.9 months); however, differences in ORR, PFS, and OS between the groups were insignificant. The OS in the nivo/ipi group was higher in the palm and sole groups than in the nail apparatus group (median: not reached vs. 8.7 months, p < 0.001). Cox multivariate analysis demonstrated that nail apparatus melanoma independently predicted unfavorable PFS and OS (p = 0.006 and 0.001). The total OS (from PD-1 monotherapy initiation to death/last follow-up) was insignificant between the groups.ConclusionNivo/ipi was not more effective than cytotoxic chemotherapy and ipilimumab after PD-1 MF in patients with advanced AM. The prognosis after PD-1 MF would be poorer for nail apparatus melanoma than for palm and sole melanoma

Effect of Spatial Distribution of SiC Particles on the Tensile Deformation Behavior of Al-10 vol%SiC Composites

No full text
The effect of particle clustering distribution on the damage accumulation and the deformation behavior is investigated in the particle reinforced metal-matrix composites. The clustering tendency of the Al-10 vol%SiC composite is evaluated by the normalized 2-dimensional local number density (LND2D) of the particle. It is found that the uniform material having a spatial distribution close to the random distribution has higher flow stress and larger elongation. The particle/matrix delamination is easy to occur preferentially at the particles of larger size in the more clustered regions in tensile deformation. Composites with lower clustering tendency have larger strain hardening capacity than those with more clustering one
