Lyman Emitters beyond Redshift 5:The Dawn of Galaxy Formation
The 8m class telescopes in the ground-based optical astronomy together with
help from the ultra-sharp eye of the Hubble Space Telescope have enabled us to
observe forming galaxies beyond redshift . In particular, more than twenty
Ly-emitting galaxies have already been found at . These findings
provide us with useful hints to investigate how galaxies formed and then
evolved in the early universe. Further, detailed analysis of Ly
emission line profiles are useful in exploring the nature of the intergalactic
medium because the trailing edge of cosmic reionization could be close to -- 7, at which forming galaxies have been found recently. We also
discuss the importance of superwinds from forming galaxies at high redshift,
which has an intimate relationship between galaxies and the intergalactic
medium. We then give a review of early cosmic star formation history based on
recent progress in searching for Ly-emitting young galaxies beyond

Changes in acetyl-CoA mediate Sik3-induced maturation of chondrocytes in endochondral bone formation
The maturation of chondrocytes is strictly regulated for proper endochondral bone formation. Although recent studies have revealed that intracellular metabolic processes regulate the proliferation and differentiation of cells, little is known about how changes in metabolite levels regulate chondrocyte maturation. To identify the metabolites which regulate chondrocyte maturation, we performed a metabolome analysis on chondrocytes of Sik3 knockout mice, in which chondrocyte maturation is delayed. Among the metabolites, acetyl-CoA was decreased in this model. Immunohistochemical analysis of the Sik3 knockout chondrocytes indicated that the expression levels of phospho-pyruvate dehydrogenase (phospho-Pdh), an inactivated form of Pdh, which is an enzyme that converts pyruvate to acetyl-CoA, and of Pdh kinase 4 (Pdk4), which phosphorylates Pdh, were increased. Inhibition of Pdh by treatment with CPI613 delayed chondrocyte maturation in metatarsal primordial cartilage in organ culture. These results collectively suggest that decreasing the acetyl-CoA level is a cause and not result of the delayed chondrocyte maturation. Sik3 appears to increase the acetyl-CoA level by decreasing the expression level of Pdk4. Blocking ATP synthesis in the TCA cycle by treatment with rotenone also delayed chondrocyte maturation in metatarsal primordial cartilage in organ culture, suggesting the possibility that depriving acetyl-CoA as a substrate for the TCA cycle is responsible for the delayed maturation. Treatment with flunitrazepam of continuous spikes and waves during slow wave sleep (CSWS) in children
SummaryWe describe our treatment of two boys with continuous spikes and waves during slow wave sleep (CSWS). One of the boys was suffering from non-convulsive status epilepticus and the other from conscious disturbance with automatism. Their ictal EEG readings showed continuous diffuse spike and wave complexes, which were considered to show electrical status. The boys were diagnosed as having CSWS, and were later diagnosed with Landau–Kleffner syndrome (LKS). EEG readings returned to normal on intravenous injection of flunitazepam (FZP) at a dose of 0.02mg/kg, suggesting that FZP is an effective treatment for CSWS

Are Two z~6 Quasars Gravitationally Lensed ?
Several high-z (z > 5.7) quasars have been found in the course of Sloan
Digital Sky Survey. The presence of such very high-z quasars is expected to
give constraints on early structure formation. On one hand, it is suggested
that these most luminous objects at high redshift are biased toward the highly
magnified objects by gravitational lensing. To clarify the effect of
gravitational lensing on the high-z quasars, we began the imaging survey of
intervening lensing galaxies. Indeed our previous optical image showed that
SDSSp J104433.04+012502.2 at z=5.74 is gravitationally magnified by a factor 2.
In this paper, we report our new optical imaging of other two high-z quasars,
SDSSp J103027.10+052455.0 at z=6.28 and SDSSp J130608.26+035626.3 at z=5.99.
Since we find neither intervening galaxy nor counter image with i^{\prime} <
25.4-25.8 around each quasar, we conclude that they are not strongly magnified

The Halpha Luminosity Function of the Galaxy Cluster Abell 521 at z = 0.25
We present an optical multicolor-imaging study of the galaxy cluster Abell
521 at , using Suprime-Cam on the Subaru Telescope, covering an area
of arcmin ( Mpc at ). Our imaging data taken with both a narrow-band filter,
(\AA and \AA), and broad-band filters,
, and allow us to find 165 H
emitters. We obtain the H luminosity function (LF) for the cluster
galaxies within 2 Mpc; the Schechter parameters are ,
Mpc, and erg s. Although the faint end slope, , is consistent with
that of the local cluster H LFs, the characteristic luminosity,
, is about 6 times (or mag) brighter. This strong
evolution implies that Abell 521 contains more active star-forming galaxies
than the local clusters, being consistent with the observed Butcher-Oemler
effect. However, the bright of Abell 521 may be, at least in part,

Role of p53 mutation in the effect of boron neutron capture therapy on oral squamous cell carcinoma
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) is a selective radiotherapy, being effective for the treatment of even advanced malignancies in head and neck regions as well as brain tumors and skin melanomas. To clarify the role of p53 gene, the effect of BNCT on oral squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) cells showing either wild- (SAS/neo) or mutant-type (SAS/mp53) p53 was examined.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Cells were exposed to neutron beams in the presence of boronophenylalanine (BPA) at Kyoto University Research Reactor. Treated cells were monitored for modulations in colony formation, proliferation, cell cycle, and expression of cell cycle-associated proteins.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>When SAS/neo and SAS/mp53 cells were subjected to BNCT, more suppressive effects on colony formation and cell viability were observed in SAS/neo compared with SAS/mp53 cells. Cell cycle arrest at the G1 checkpoint was observed in SAS/neo, but not in SAS/mp53. Apoptotic cells increased from 6 h after BNCT in SAS/neo and 48 h in SAS/mp53 cells. The expression of p21 was induced in SAS/neo only, but G2 arrest-associated proteins including Wee1, cdc2, and cyclin B1 were altered in both cell lines.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>These results indicate that oral SCC cells with mutant-type are more resistant to BNCT than those with wild-type p53, and that the lack of G1 arrest and related apoptosis may contribute to the resistance. At a physical dose affecting the cell cycle, BNCT inhibits oral SCC cells in p53-dependent and -independent manners.</p
