Development of a Geant4 Solid for Stereo Mini-jet Cells in a Cylindrical Drift Chamber
Stereo mini-jet cells will be indispensable components of a future
linear collider central tracker such as JLC-CDC. There is, however, no official
Geant4 solid available at present to describe such geometrical objects, which
had been a major obstacle for us to develop a full Geant4-based simulator with
stereo cells built in. We have thus extended Geant4 to include a new solid
({\tt TwistedTubs}), which consists of three kinds of surfaces: two end planes,
inner and outer hyperboloidal surfaces, and two so-called twisted surfaces that
make slant and twisted -boundaries. Design philosophy and its realization
in the Geant4 framework are described together with algorithmic details. We
have implemented stereo cells with the new solid, and tested them using
geantinos and Pythia events ( at ).
The performance was found reasonable: the stereo cells consumed only 25% more
CPU time than ordinary axial cells.Comment: 24 pages, 15 figures, to be published in Computer Physics

SiO Maser Survey of the Inner Bar of the Galactic Bulge
We surveyed 291 MSX/2MASS infrared objects in the 7 x 2 deg area of the
galactic center in the 43 GHz SiO J=1--0 v=1 and 2 maser lines, obtaining
accurate radial velocities of 163 detected objects. The surveyed area is the
region where the IRAS catalog is incomplete due to contamination by high source
density. The objects in the present MSX/2MASS sample were chosen to have
similar infrared characteristics to those of the previous SiO-maser-survey
samples based on the color selected IRAS sources. The sampling based on the
2MASS catalog causes a bias to the foreside objects of the bulge due to heavy
obscuration by interstellar dust; the detections are considerably leaned on the
V_{lsr}<0 side. The l--v diagram reveals two conspicuous features, which were
not present or tenuous in the previous studies: one feature indicating a linear
velocity increase with longitude with |l|<1.5 deg, which is likely associated
with the inner bar, and the other feature having considerably eccentric
velocities more than those of the normal x_1-orbit family feature. The
extinction-corrected K magnitudes (if used as a distance modulus) tend to show
a sequential deposition of these objects along the line of sight toward the
Galactic center depending on their radial velocities. The tendency that
appeared in the distance measures is consistent with the bulge-bar dynamical
model utilizing the periodic orbit families in the bar potential.Comment: Full high resolution figures available as NRO report No.638 at

Co-existence of inhibitory and stimulatory factors modulating cell proliferation in rat liver cytoplasm.
Factors that inhibit and stimulate cell proliferation were found to coexist in rat liver supernatant. The inhibitory and stimulatory factors were separated by ethanol fractionation. Both factors were sensitive to heat- and trypsin-treatment. The activity of the inhibitor was diminished by partial hepatectomy. The inhibitor from normal livers inhibited DNA and RNA synthesis in the L-cell system, but the same fraction from regenerating livers caused little or no inhibition of nucleic acid synthesis. The stimulatory factor from regenerating livers had a stronger effect on cell proliferation than that of normal livers. Furthermore, the inhibitor from normal livers depressed DNA synthesis in vivo in regenerating livers
Relationship between Bilirubin Decreasing Rate "b" and Morbidity in Patients with Obstructive Jaundice
In the period from 1970 to 1985, 114 patients on whom secondarily operation for obstructive jaundice has been done were surveyed.In order to determine a good clinical indicator for predicting prognosis, we took total bilirubin level and the bilirubin decreasing rate "b". In the relationship between total bilirubin level and morbidity, no significant difference were noted in the groups of total bilirubin level below 4.9mg/dl, at 5.0-9.9mg/dl, and over 10.0mg/dl. While the rate of complication is estimated to be 25% in the good group classified by "b" value, 33.9% in the fair group and 73.5% in the poor group, respectively. Significant difference between morbidity in the good group and the poor (p<0.01), and in the fair and the poor (p<0.01) were noted. Thus we conclude that the bilirubin decreasing rate "b" is much better clinical indicator than total bilirubin level
