    Micro-layered-photolithography for Micro-Fabrication and Micro-Molding

    A novel process based on the principle of layered photolithography has been proposed and tested for making real three-dimensional micro-structures. An experimental setup was designed and built for doing experiments on this micro-fabrication process. An ultraviolet (UV) excimer laser at the wavelength of 248 nm was used as the light source and a single piece of photo-mask carrying a series of two dimensional (2D) patterns sliced from a three dimensional (3D) micro-part was employed for the photolithography process. The experiments were conducted on the solidification of liquid photopolymer from single layer to multiple layers. The single-layer photolithography experiments showed that certain photopolymers could be applied for the 3D micro-fabrication, and solid layers with sharp shapes could be formed from the liquid polymer identified. By using a unique alignment technique, multiple layers of photolithography was successfully realized for a micro-gear with features at 60 microns. Electroforming was also conducted for converting the photopolymer master to a metal cavity of the micro-gear, which proved that the process is feasible for micro-molding.Singapore-MIT Alliance (SMA

    Accuracy Analysis and Improvement for Direct Laser Sintering

    The accuracy issue of a rapid prototyping-direct laser sintering system is studied in this paper. The sources of errors are analyzed for their contribution to the final accuracy of built parts. The error sources are related to the hardware and software of the machine, the materials and the process. Special measures were exploited to improve the accuracy of the direct laser sintering system and process. For the errors caused by hardware like laser scanner, compensation by software was developed to correct the errors resulting from galvano-mirrors and F-θ lens. A compensation function mode was added to the slicing software to compensate the errors caused by material shrinkage and laser beam offset. Based on the analysis and improvement, a desired accuracy of 0.2mm has been achieved for the direct laser sintering system, which was verified by experiments.Singapore-MIT Alliance (SMA

    Quality of life and menopausal transition for middle-aged women on Kinmen island

    Although it seems reasonable to suggest that most women experience significant changes in quality of life (QOL) during the menopausal period, few researchers have quantified these changes. A total of 1497 women, aged 40–54 years and living on the island of Kinmen, were recruited for this survey. However, 137 were eliminated leaving 1360 for analysis. Women who used hormonal therapy or who had undergone surgically induced menopause were excluded. The subjects with incomplete data or who exhibited mental retardation or severe psychiatric disease were also eliminated. Univariate analysis demonstrated that, in general, QOL scores were poorer for perimenopausal and postmenopausal status. Comparing pre- and postmenopausal women, significant statistical differences were demonstrated for role limitations due to physical and emotional problems, even after adjusting for age, education level, body mass index, menarche, and chronic illness. A strong association was demonstrated between menopausal symptoms and premens-trual syndrome (PMS). Women with menopausal symptoms and PMS had significantly lower scores on all SF-36 dimensions.     Community production modulates coral reef pH and the sensitivity of ecosystem calcification to ocean acidification

As the ocean warms and acidifies, there is mounting concern that declining calcification rates could shift coral reef CaCO3 budgets from net accretion to net dissolution. We quantified net ecosystem calcification (NEC) and production (NEP) on Dongsha Atoll, northern South China Sea, over a 2 week period that included a transient bleaching event. Peak daytime pH on the wide, shallow reef flat during the nonbleaching period was ∼8.5, significantly elevated above that of the surrounding open ocean (∼8.0–8.1) as a consequence of daytime NEP (up to 112 mmol C m−2 h−1). Diurnal-averaged NEC was 390 ± 90 mmol CaCO3 m−2 d−1, higher than any other coral reef studied to date despite comparable calcifier cover (25%) and relatively high fleshy algal cover (19%). Coral bleaching linked to elevated temperatures significantly reduced daytime NEP by 29 mmol C m−2 h−1. pH on the reef flat declined by 0.2 units, causing a 40% reduction in NEC in the absence of pH changes in the surrounding open ocean. Our findings highlight the interactive relationship between carbonate chemistry of coral reef ecosystems and ecosystem production and calcification rates, which are in turn impacted by ocean warming. As open-ocean waters bathing coral reefs warm and acidify over the 21st century, the health and composition of reef benthic communities will play a major role in determining on-reef conditions that will in turn dictate the ecosystem response to climate change.NSF Grant Number: 12205292017-07-3

    Incidence and influence on referral of primary stabbing headache in an outpatient headache clinic

    Primary stabbing headache (PSH) is a pain, as brief, sharp, jabbing stabs, predominantly felt in the first division of trigeminal nerve. Population studies have shown that PSH is a common headache. However, most people suffer attacks of low frequency or intensity and seldom seek for medical assistance. There are few clinic-based studies of PSH, and its real influence as a primary cause for referral to neurology outpatient offices is to be determined. We aim to investigate the burden of PSH as main complaint in an outpatient headache clinic. We reviewed all patients with PSH (ICHD-II criteria), attended in an outpatient headache clinic in a tertiary hospital during a 2.5-year period (January 2008–June 2010). We considered demographic and nosological characteristics and if PSH was main cause of submission. 36 patients (26 females, 10 males) out of 725 (5%) were diagnosed of PSH. Mean age at onset 34.1 ± 2.9 years (range 10–72). Mean time from onset to diagnosis 68.8 ± 18.3 months. Twenty-four patients fulfilled ICHD-II criteria for other headaches (14 migraine, 6 tension-type headache, 2 hemicrania continua, 1 primary cough headache and 1 primary exertional headache). 77.7% of patients were submitted from primary care. In 14 patients (39%), PSH was main reason for submission, its intensity or frequency in 5 (35.7%) and fear of malignancy in 9 (74.3%). Only two patients of those who associated other headaches were submitted due to PSH. In conclusion, PSH is not an uncommon diagnosis in an outpatient headache office. However, and according to our data, it is not usually the main cause of submission to a headache clinic

    Radiation therapy for vaginal and perirectal lesions in recurrent ovarian cancer

    The role for localized radiation to treat ovarian cancer (OC) patients with locally recurrent vaginal/perirectal lesions remains unclear, though we hypothesize these patients may be salvaged locally and gain long-term survival benefit. We describe our institutional outcomes using intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) +/- high-dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy to treat this population. Our primary objectives were to evaluate complete response rates of targeted lesions after radiation and calculate our 5-year in-field control (IFC) rate. Secondary objectives were to assess radiation-related toxicities, chemotherapy free-interval (CFI), as well as post-radiation progression-free (PFS) and overall survival (OS). PFS and OS were defined from radiation start to either progression or death/last follow-up, respectively. This was a heavily pre-treated cohort of 17 recurrent OC patients with a median follow-up of 28.4 months (range 4.5-166.4) after radiation completion. 52.9% had high-grade serous histology and 4 (23.5%) had isolated vaginal/perirectal disease. Four (23.5%) patients had in-field failures at 3.7, 11.2, 24.5, and 27.5 months after start of radiation, all treated with definitive dosing of radiation therapy. Patients who were platinum-sensitive prior to radiation had similar median PFS (6.5 vs. 13.4 months, log-rank p = 0.75), but longer OS (71.1 vs 18.8 months, log-rank p = 0.05) than their platinum-resistant counterparts. Excluding patients with low-grade histology or who were treated with palliative radiation, median CFI was 14.2 months (range 4.7 - 33.0). Radiation was well tolerated with 2 (12.0%) experiencing grade 3/4 gastrointestinal/genitourinary toxicities. In conclusion, radiation to treat locally recurrent vaginal/perirectal lesions in heavily pre-treated OC patients is safe and may effectively provide IFC

    Knowledge and attitudes towards dementia in adolescent students

    Background: Improving people’s knowledge, perceptions and attitudes of dementia is important in the formation of dementia-friendly communities. However, at present, there is very little evidence from adolescents, who are already the junior members of such communities and will be carers in their own rights in the future. Our aim was to evaluate adolescents’ knowledge and attitudes of dementia. Methods: Four-hundred and fifty adolescents, aged 15–18 years, from schools in Sussex (UK) were invited to complete a series of questions that assessed their dementia knowledge and attitudes. Results: A total of 359 adolescent students completed the questionnaire. Out of 15 questions on dementia knowledge, participants were on average able to answer less than half correctly (M = 6.65, standard deviation = 2.34). Responses to the attitudes questionnaire showed that adolescent students had both positive and negative attitudes toward dementia. Discussion: There is scope for adolescents attending school to improve their dementia knowledge and attitudes. More effort is needed to embed initial dementia understanding in the school curriculum which will improve awareness about dementia at an earlier age and will enhance dementia-friendly communities
