Electronic structure near an impurity and terrace on the surface of a 3-dimensional topological insulator
Motivated by recent scanning tunneling microscopy experiments on surfaces of
BiSb\cite{yazdanistm,gomesstm} and
BiTe,\cite{kaptunikstm,xuestm} we theoretically study the electronic
structure of a 3-dimensional (3D) topological insulator in the presence of a
local impurity or a domain wall on its surface using a 3D lattice model. While
the local density of states (LDOS) oscillates significantly in space at
energies above the bulk gap, the oscillation due to the in-gap surface Dirac
fermions are very weak. The extracted modulation wave number as a function of
energy satisfies the Dirac dispersion for in-gap energies and follows the
border of the bulk continuum above the bulk gap. We have also examined
analytically the effects of the defects by using a pure Dirac fermion model for
the surface states and found that the LDOS decays asymptotically faster at
least by a factor of 1/r than that in normal metals, consistent with the
results obtained from our lattice model.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure
Compression via Compressive Sensing : A Low-Power Framework for the Telemonitoring of Multi-Channel Physiological Signals
Telehealth and wearable equipment can deliver personal healthcare and
necessary treatment remotely. One major challenge is transmitting large amount
of biosignals through wireless networks. The limited battery life calls for
low-power data compressors. Compressive Sensing (CS) has proved to be a
low-power compressor. In this study, we apply CS on the compression of
multichannel biosignals. We firstly develop an efficient CS algorithm from the
Block Sparse Bayesian Learning (BSBL) framework. It is based on a combination
of the block sparse model and multiple measurement vector model. Experiments on
real-life Fetal ECGs showed that the proposed algorithm has high fidelity and
efficiency. Implemented in hardware, the proposed algorithm was compared to a
Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) based algorithm, verifying the proposed one
has low power consumption and occupies less computational resources.Comment: 2013 International Workshop on Biomedical and Health Informatic
Dynamics of Order Parameter in Photoexcited Peierls Chain
The photoexcited dynamics of order parameter in Peierls chain is investigated
by using a microscopic quantum theory in the limit where the hot electrons may
establish themselves into a quasi-equilibrium state described by an effective
temperature. The optical phonon mode responsible for the Peierls instability is
coupled to the electron subsystem, and its dynamic equation is derived in terms
of the density matrix technique. Recovery dynamics of the order parameter is
obtained, which reveals a number of interesting features including the change
of oscillation frequency and amplitude at phase transition temperature and the
photo-induced switching of order parameter.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
Possible pi-phase shift at interface of two pnictides with antiphase s-wave pairing
We examine the nature of Josephson junction between two identical
Fe-pnictides with anti-phase s-wave pairing. pi-phase shift is found if the
junction barrier is thick and the two Fe-pnictides are oriented in certain
directions relative to the interface. Our theory provides a possible
explanation for the observed half integer flux quantum transitions in a
niobium/polycrystal NdFeAsO loop, and attributes the pi-phase shift to
intergrain junctions of Fe-pnictides.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
Holographic Schwinger effect with a moving D3-brane
We study the Schwinger effect with a moving D3-brane in a =4 SYM
plasma with the aid of AdS/CFT correspondence. We discuss the test particle
pair moving transverse and parallel to the plasma wind respectively. It is
found that for both cases the presence of velocity tends to increase the
Schwinger effect. In addition, the velocity has a stronger influence on the
Schwinger effect when the pair moves transverse to the plasma wind rather than
parallel.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figure
