Stripe formation in bacterial systems with density-suppressed motility
Engineered bacteria in which motility is reduced by local cell density
generate periodic stripes of high and low density when spotted on agar plates.
We study theoretically the origin and mechanism of this process in a kinetic
model that includes growth and density-suppressed motility of the cells. The
spreading of a region of immotile cells into an initially cell-free region is
analyzed. From the calculated front profile we provide an analytic ansatz to
determine the phase boundary between the stripe and the no-stripe phases. The

Male Clients of Male Sex Workers in China: An Ignored High-Risk Population.
BackgroundThere is a high prevalence of HIV/syphilis among male sex workers, but no formal study has ever been conducted focusing on male clients of male sex workers (MCM). A detailed investigation was thus called for, to determine the burden and sociobehavioral determinants of HIV and syphilis among these MCM in China.MethodsAs part of a multicenter cross-sectional study, using respondent-driven and snowball sampling, 2958 consenting adult men who have sex with men (MSM) were recruited, interviewed, and tested for HIV and syphilis between 2008 and 2009. The distributions of sociodemographic characteristics, risk behaviors, and HIV/syphilis prevalence were determined and compared between MCM and other MSM.ResultsAmong recruited MSM, 5.0% (n = 148) were MCM. HIV prevalences for MCM and other MSM were 7.4% and 7.7%, whereas 18.9% and 14.0% were positive for syphilis, respectively. Condomless anal intercourse (CAI) was reported by 59.5% of MCM and 48.2% of MSM. Multiple logistic regression revealed that compared with other MSM, MCM were more likely to have less education [for ≤ elementary level, adjusted odds ratio (aOR) = 3.13, 95% confidence interval (95% CI): 1.42 to 6.90], higher income (for >500 US Dollars per month, aOR = 2.97, 95% CI: 1.53 to 5.77), more often found partners at parks/restrooms (aOR = 4.01, 95% CI: 2.34 to 6.85), reported CAI (aOR = 1.49, 95% CI: 1.05 to 2.10), reported a larger sexual network (for ≥ 10, aOR = 2.70, 95% CI: 1.44 to 5.07), and higher odds of syphilis (aOR = 1.54, 95% CI: 1.00 to 2.38).ConclusionsThe greater frequency of risk behaviors and high prevalence of HIV and syphilis indicated that HIV/syphilis prevention programs in China need to pay special attention to MCM as a distinct subgroup, which was completely ignored until date
Contrastive Brain Network Learning via Hierarchical Signed Graph Pooling Model
Recently brain networks have been widely adopted to study brain dynamics,
brain development and brain diseases. Graph representation learning techniques
on brain functional networks can facilitate the discovery of novel biomarkers
for clinical phenotypes and neurodegenerative diseases. However, current graph
learning techniques have several issues on brain network mining. Firstly, most
current graph learning models are designed for unsigned graph, which hinders
the analysis of many signed network data (e.g., brain functional networks).
Meanwhile, the insufficiency of brain network data limits the model performance
on clinical phenotypes predictions. Moreover, few of current graph learning
model is interpretable, which may not be capable to provide biological insights
for model outcomes. Here, we propose an interpretable hierarchical signed graph
representation learning model to extract graph-level representations from brain
functional networks, which can be used for different prediction tasks. In order
to further improve the model performance, we also propose a new strategy to
augment functional brain network data for contrastive learning. We evaluate
this framework on different classification and regression tasks using the data
from HCP and OASIS. Our results from extensive experiments demonstrate the
superiority of the proposed model compared to several state-of-the-art
techniques. Additionally, we use graph saliency maps, derived from these
prediction tasks, to demonstrate detection and interpretation of phenotypic
biomarkers
Synergy of Pd atoms and oxygen vacancies on In₂O₃ for methane conversion under visible light
Methane (CH4) oxidation to high value chemicals under mild conditions through photocatalysis is a sustainable and appealing pathway, nevertheless confronting the critical issues regarding both conversion and selectivity. Herein, under visible irradiation (420 nm), the synergy of palladium (Pd) atom cocatalyst and oxygen vacancies (OVs) on In2O3 nanorods enables superior photocatalytic CH4 activation by O2. The optimized catalyst reaches ca. 100 μmol h-1 of C1 oxygenates, with a selectivity of primary products (CH3OH and CH3OOH) up to 82.5%. Mechanism investigation elucidates that such superior photocatalysis is induced by the dedicated function of Pd single atoms and oxygen vacancies on boosting hole and electron transfer, respectively. O2 is proven to be the only oxygen source for CH3OH production, while H2O acts as the promoter for efficient CH4 activation through ·OH production and facilitates product desorption as indicated by DFT modeling. This work thus provides new understandings on simultaneous regulation of both activity and selectivity by the synergy of single atom cocatalysts and oxygen vacancies
Efficient metal halide perovskite light-emitting diodes with significantly improved light extraction on nanophotonic substrates.
Metal halide perovskite has emerged as a promising material for light-emitting diodes. In the past, the performance of devices has been improved mainly by optimizing the active and charge injection layers. However, the large refractive index difference among different materials limits the overall light extraction. Herein, we fabricate efficient methylammonium lead bromide light-emitting diodes on nanophotonic substrates with an optimal device external quantum efficiency of 17.5% which is around twice of the record for the planar device based on this material system. Furthermore, optical modelling shows that a high light extraction efficiency of 73.6% can be achieved as a result of a two-step light extraction process involving nanodome light couplers and nanowire optical antennas on the nanophotonic substrate. These results suggest that utilization of nanophotonic structures can be an effective approach to achieve high performance perovskite light-emitting diodes
A Label-Free Quantitative Proteomic Analysis of Mouse Neutrophil Extracellular Trap Formation Induced by Streptococcus suis or Phorbol Myristate Acetate (PMA)
Streptococcus suis (S. suis) ranks among the five most important porcine pathogens worldwide and occasionally threatens human health, particularly in people who come into close contact with pigs or pork products. An S. suis infection induces the formation of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) in vitro and in vivo, and the NET structure plays an essential role in S. suis clearance. However, the signaling pathway by which S. suis induces NET formation remains to be elucidated. In the present study, we used a label-free quantitative proteomic analysis of mouse NET formation induced by S. suis or phorbol myristate acetate (PMA), a robust NET inducer. Greater than 50% of the differentially expressed proteins in neutrophils infected by S. suis showed similar changes as observed following PMA stimulation, and PKC, NADPH oxidase, and MPO were required for NET formation induced by both stimuli. Because PMA induced robust NET formation while S. suis (MOI = 2) induced only weak NET formation, the association between the inducer and NET formation was worth considering. Interestingly, proteins involved in peptidase activity showed significant differential changes in response to each inducer. Of these peptidases, MMP-8 expression was obviously decreased in response to PMA, but it was not significantly changed in response to S. suis. A subsequent study further confirmed that MMP-8 activity was inversely correlated with NET formation induced by both stimuli. Therefore, the present study provides potentially important information about the manner by which neutrophils responded to the inducers to form NETs
