Characterization of nonlinear effects in edge filters
A specially designed and produced edge filter with pronounced nonlinear
effects is carefully characterized. The nonlinear effects are estimated at the
intensities close to the laser-induced damage.Comment: 3 page
Investigation of the thermal expansion and heat capacity of the CaCu3Ti4O12 ceramics
The thermal expansion of the CaCu3Ti4O12 ceramics has been measured over a wide temperature
range 120–1200 K. The high quality of the samples under study has been confirmed by good agreement of
the results of measurements of the heat capacity in the range 2–300 K and in the vicinity of the phase transition of magnetic nature at 25 K with the data for the single crystal. No anomalies in the thermal expansion
that can be associated with the phase transition at 726–732 K assumed by other investigators have been found.
The influence exerted on the thermal expansion by the heat treatment of the sample in a helium atmosphere
and in air has been investigated
Antiferromagnetic Phases of One-Dimensional Quarter-Filled Organic Conductors
The magnetic structure of antiferromagnetically ordered phases of
quasi-one-dimensional organic conductors is studied theoretically at absolute
zero based on the mean field approximation to the quarter-filled band with
on-site and nearest-neighbor Coulomb interaction. The differences in magnetic
properties between the antiferromagnetic phase of (TMTTF)X and the spin
density wave phase in (TMTSF)X are seen to be due to a varying degrees of
roles played by the on-site Coulomb interaction. The nearest-neighbor Coulomb
interaction introduces charge disproportionation, which has the same spatial
periodicity as the Wigner crystal, accompanied by a modified antiferromagnetic
phase. This is in accordance with the results of experiments on (TMTTF)Br
and (TMTTF)SCN. Moreover, the antiferromagnetic phase of (DI-DCNQI)Ag

Phonons and Magnetic Excitations in Mott-Insulator LaTiO
The polarized Raman spectra of stoichiometric LaTiO (T K) were
measured between 6 and 300 K. In contrast to earlier report on half-metallic
LaTiO, neither strong background scattering, nor Fano shape of the
Raman lines was observed. The high frequency phonon line at 655 cm
exhibits anomalous softening below T: a signature for structural
rearrangement. The assignment of the Raman lines was done by comparison to the
calculations of lattice dynamics and the nature of structural changes upon
magnetic ordering are discussed. The broad Raman band, which appears in the
antiferromagnetic phase, is assigned to two-magnon scattering. The estimated
superexchange constant meV is in excellent agreement with the
result of neutron scattering studies.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
Evidence for Jahn-Teller distortions at the antiferromagnetic transition in LaTiO
LaTiO is known as Mott-insulator which orders antiferromagnetically at
K. We report on results of thermal expansion and temperature
dependent x-ray diffraction together with measurements of the heat capacity,
electrical transport measurements, and optical spectroscopy in untwinned single
crystals. At significant structural changes appear, which are
volume conserving. Concomitant anomalies are also observed in the
dc-resistivity, in bulk modulus, and optical reflectivity spectra. We interpret

Crystal and magnetic structure of LaTiO3 : evidence for non-degenerate -orbitals
The crystal and magnetic structure of LaTiO3 ~ has been studied by x-ray and
neutron diffraction techniques using nearly stoichiometric samples. We find a
strong structural anomaly near the antiferromagnetic ordering, T=146 K. In
addition, the octahedra in LaTiO3 exhibit an intrinsic distortion which implies
a splitting of the t2g-levels. Our results indicate that LaTiO3 should be
considered as a Jahn-Teller system where the structural distortion and the
resulting level splitting are enhanced by the magnetic ordering.Comment: 4 pages 5 figure
Heavy-Fermion Formation at the Metal-to-Insulator Transition in GdSrTiO
The perovskite-like transition-metal oxide GdSrTiO is
investigated by measurements of resistivity, specific-heat, and electron
paramagnetic resonance (EPR). Approaching the metal-to-insulator transition
from the metallic regime (), the Sommerfeld coefficient of
the specific heat becomes strongly enhanced and the resistivity increases
quadratically at low temperatures, which both are fingerprints of strong
electronic correlations. The temperature dependence of the dynamic
susceptibility, as determined from the Gd-EPR linewidth, signals the
importance of strong spin fluctuations, as observed in heavy-fermion compounds.Comment: 4pages, 3 figure
Madang Province: Text summaries, maps, code lists and village identification
The major purpose of the Papua New Guinea Agricultural Systems Project is to produce information on small holder (subsistence) agriculture at provincial and national levels (Allen et al 1995). Information was collected by field observation, interviews with villagers and reference to published and unpublished documents. Methods are described by Bourke et al. (1993). This Working Paper contains a written summary of the information on the Agricultural Systems in this Province, maps of the location of agriculture systems, a complete listing of all information in the database in coded form, and lists of villages with National Population Census codes, indexed by agricultural systems. This information is available as a map-linked database (GIS) suitable for use on a personal computer in ESRI and MapInfo formats. An Agricultural System is identified when a set of similar agricultural crops and practices occur within a defined area. Six criteria are used to distinguish one system from another: 1. Fallow type (the vegetation which is cleared from a garden site before cultivation). 2. Fallow period (the length of time a garden site is left unused between cultivations). 3. Cultivation intensity (the number of consecutive crops planted before fallow). 4. The staple, or most important, crops. 5. Garden and crop segregation (the extent to which crops are planted in separate gardens; in separate areas within a garden; or are planted sequentially). 6. Soil fertility maintenance techniques (other than natural regrowth fallows). Where one or more of these factors differs significantly and the differences can be mapped, then a separate system is distinguished. Where variation occurs, but is not able to be mapped at 1:500 000 scale because the areas in which the variation occurs are too small or are widely dispersed within the larger system, a subsystem is identified. Subsystems within an Agricultural System are allocated a separate record in the database, identified by the Agricultural System number and a subsystem number. Sago is a widespread staple food in lowland Papua New Guinea. Sago is produced from palms which are not grown in gardens. Most of the criteria above cannot be applied. In this case, systems are differentiated on the basis of the staple crops only. The Papua New Guinea Resource Information System (PNGRIS) is a GIS which contains information on the natural resources of PNG (Bellamy 1986). PNGRIS contains no information on agricultural practices, other than an assessment of land use intensity based on air photograph interpretation by Saunders (1993. The Agricultural Systems Project is designed to provide detailed information on agricultural practices and cropping patterns as part of an upgraded PNGRIS geographical information system. For this reason the Agricultural Systems database contains almost no information on the environmental settings of the systems, except for altitude and slope. The layout of the text descriptions, the database code files and the village lists are similar to PNGRIS formats (Cuddy 1987). The mapping of Agricultural Systems has been carried out on the same map base and scale as PNGRIS (Tactical Pilotage Charts, 1:500 000). Agricultural Systems were mapped within the areas of agricultural land use established by Saunders (1993) from aerial photography. Except where specifically noted, Agricultural Systems boundaries have been mapped without reference to PNGRIS Resource Mapping Unit (RMU) boundaries. Agricultural Systems are defined at the level of the Province (following PNGRIS) but their wider distribution is recognised in the database by cross-referencing systems which cross provincial borders. A preliminary view of the relationships between PNGRIS RMUs and the Agricultural Systems in this Province can be obtained from the listing of villages by Agricultural System, where RMU numbers are appended.

Anisotropic Colossal Magnetoresistance Effects in Fe_{1-x}Cu_xCr_2S_4
A detailed study of the electronic transport and magnetic properties of
FeCuCrS () on single crystals is presented. The
resistivity is investigated for K in magnetic fields up to
14 Tesla and under hydrostatic pressure up to 16 kbar. In addition
magnetization and ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) measurements were performed.
FMR and magnetization data reveal a pronounced magnetic anisotropy, which
develops below the Curie temperature, , and increases strongly
towards lower temperatures. Increasing the Cu concentration reduces this
effect. At temperatures below 35 K the magnetoresistance, , exhibits a strong dependence on the direction of the
magnetic field, probably due to an enhanced anisotropy. Applying the field
along the hard axis leads to a change of sign and a strong increase of the
absolute value of the magnetoresistance. On the other hand the
magnetoresistance remains positive down to lower temperatures, exhibiting a
smeared out maximum with the magnetic field applied along the easy axis. The
results are discussed in the ionic picture using a triple-exchange model for
electron hopping as well as a half-metal utilizing a band picture.Comment: some typos correcte
