Stable quantum memories with limited measurement
We demonstrate the existence of a finite temperature threshold for a 1D
stabilizer code under an error correcting protocol that requires only a
fraction of the syndrome measurements. Below the threshold temperature, encoded
states have exponentially long lifetimes, as demonstrated by numerical and
analytical arguments. We sketch how this algorithm generalizes to higher
dimensional stabilizer codes with string-like excitations, like the toric code.Comment: 11 Pages, 7 Figure
Modern Approaches to Exact Diagonalization and Selected Configuration Interaction with the Adaptive Sampling CI Method.
Recent advances in selected configuration interaction methods have made them competitive with the most accurate techniques available and, hence, creating an increasingly powerful tool for solving quantum Hamiltonians. In this work, we build on recent advances from the adaptive sampling configuration interaction (ASCI) algorithm. We show that a useful paradigm for generating efficient selected CI/exact diagonalization algorithms is driven by fast sorting algorithms, much in the same way iterative diagonalization is based on the paradigm of matrix vector multiplication. We present several new algorithms for all parts of performing a selected CI, which includes new ASCI search, dynamic bit masking, fast orbital rotations, fast diagonal matrix elements, and residue arrays. The ASCI search algorithm can be used in several different modes, which includes an integral driven search and a coefficient driven search. The algorithms presented here are fast and scalable, and we find that because they are built on fast sorting algorithms they are more efficient than all other approaches we considered. After introducing these techniques, we present ASCI results applied to a large range of systems and basis sets to demonstrate the types of simulations that can be practically treated at the full-CI level with modern methods and hardware, presenting double- and triple-ζ benchmark data for the G1 data set. The largest of these calculations is Si2H6 which is a simulation of 34 electrons in 152 orbitals. We also present some preliminary results for fast deterministic perturbation theory simulations that use hash functions to maintain high efficiency for treating large basis sets
Relaxation dynamics of the toric code in contact with a thermal reservoir: Finite-size scaling in a low temperature regime
We present an analysis of the relaxation dynamics of finite-size topological
qubits in contact with a thermal bath. Using a continuous-time Monte Carlo
method, we explicitly compute the low-temperature nonequilibrium dynamics of
the toric code on finite lattices. In contrast to the size-independent bound
predicted for the toric code in the thermodynamic limit, we identify a
low-temperature regime on finite lattices below a size-dependent crossover
temperature with nontrivial finite-size and temperature scaling of the
relaxation time. We demonstrate how this nontrivial finite-size scaling is
governed by the scaling of topologically nontrivial two-dimensional classical
random walks. The transition out of this low-temperature regime defines a
dynamical finite-size crossover temperature that scales inversely with the log
of the system size, in agreement with a crossover temperature defined from
equilibrium properties. We find that both the finite-size and
finite-temperature scaling are stronger in the low-temperature regime than
above the crossover temperature. Since this finite-temperature scaling competes
with the scaling of the robustness to unitary perturbations, this analysis may
elucidate the scaling of memory lifetimes of possible physical realizations of
topological qubits.Comment: 14 Pages, 13 figure

Microscopic Magnetic Stimulation of Neural Tissue
Electrical stimulation is currently used to treat a wide range of cardiovascular, sensory and neurological diseases. Despite its success, there are significant limitations to its application, including incompatibility with magnetic resonance imaging, limited control of electric fields and decreased performance associated with tissue inflammation. Magnetic stimulation overcomes these limitations but existing devices (that is, transcranial magnetic stimulation) are large, reducing their translation to chronic applications. In addition, existing devices are not effective for deeper, sub-cortical targets. Here we demonstrate that sub-millimeter coils can activate neuronal tissue. Interestingly, the results of both modelling and physiological experiments suggest that different spatial orientations of the coils relative to the neuronal tissue can be used to generate specific neural responses. These results raise the possibility that micro-magnetic stimulation coils, small enough to be implanted within the brain parenchyma, may prove to be an effective alternative to existing stimulation devices
An H I Survey of Six Local Group Analogs. II. H I Properties of Group Galaxies
We have conducted an H I 21cm emission-line survey of six loose groups of galaxies chosen to be analogs to the Local Group. The survey was conducted using the Parkes multibeam instrument and the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) over a 1Mpc2 area and covering the full depth of each group, with an MH I sensitivity of 7 × 105 M. Our survey detected 110sources, 61 of which are associated with the six groups. All of these sources were confirmed with ATCA observations or were previously cataloged by HIPASS. The sources all have optical counterparts and properties consistent with dwarf irregular or late-type spiral galaxies. We present here the H I properties of the groups and their galaxies. We derive an H I mass function (HIMF) for the groups that is consistent with being flatter than the equivalent field HIMF. We also derive a circular velocity distribution function, tracing the luminous dark matter halos in the groups, that is consistent with those of the Local Group and HIPASS galaxies, both of which are shallower than that of clusters or predictions from cold dark matter models of galaxy formation
