Impacts of Co-Solvent Flushing on Microbial Populations Capable of Degrading Trichloroethylene
With increased application of co-solvent flushing technologies for removal of nonaqueous phase liquids from groundwater aquifers, concern over the effects of the solvent on native microorganisms and their ability to degrade residual contaminant has also arisen. This study assessed the impact of ethanol flushing on the numbers and activity potentials of trichloroethylene (TCE)-degrading microbial populations present in aquifer soils taken immediately after and 2 years after ethanol flushing of a former dry cleaners site. Polymerase chain reaction analysis revealed soluble methane monooxygenase genes in methanotrophic enrichments, and 16S rRNA analysis identified Methylocystis parvus with 98% similarity, further indicating the presence of a type II methanotroph. Dissimilatory sulfite reductase genes in sulfate-reducing enrichments prepared were also observed. Ethanol flushing was simulated in columns packed with uncontaminated soils from the dry cleaners site that were dosed with TCE at concentrations observed in the field; after flushing, the columns were subjected to a continuous flow of 500 pore volumes of groundwater per week. Total acridine orange direct cell counts of the flushed and nonflushed soils decreased over the 15-week testing period, but after 5 weeks, the flushed soils maintained higher cell counts than the nonflushed soils. Inhibition of methanogenesis by sulfate reduction was observed in all column soils, as was increasing removal of total methane by soils incubated under methanotrophic conditions. These results showed that impacts of ethanol were not as severe as anticipated and imply that ethanol may mitigate the toxicity of TCE to the microorganisms
An experimental test of non-local realism
Most working scientists hold fast to the concept of 'realism' - a viewpoint
according to which an external reality exists independent of observation. But
quantum physics has shattered some of our cornerstone beliefs. According to
Bell's theorem, any theory that is based on the joint assumption of realism and
locality (meaning that local events cannot be affected by actions in space-like
separated regions) is at variance with certain quantum predictions. Experiments
with entangled pairs of particles have amply confirmed these quantum
predictions, thus rendering local realistic theories untenable. Maintaining
realism as a fundamental concept would therefore necessitate the introduction
of 'spooky' actions that defy locality. Here we show by both theory and
experiment that a broad and rather reasonable class of such non-local realistic
theories is incompatible with experimentally observable quantum correlations.
In the experiment, we measure previously untested correlations between two
entangled photons, and show that these correlations violate an inequality
proposed by Leggett for non-local realistic theories. Our result suggests that
giving up the concept of locality is not sufficient to be consistent with
quantum experiments, unless certain intuitive features of realism are

Correlators of Vertex Operators for Circular Strings with Winding Numbers in AdS5xS5
We compute semiclassically the two-point correlator of the marginal vertex
operators describing the rigid circular spinning string state with one large
spin and one windining number in AdS_5 and three large spins and three winding
numbers in S^5. The marginality condition and the conformal invariant
expression for the two-point correlator obtained by using an appropriate vertex
operator are shown to be associated with the diagonal and off-diagonal Virasoro
constraints respectively. We evaluate semiclassically the three-point
correlator of two heavy circular string vertex operators and one zero-momentum
dilaton vertex operator and discuss its relation with the derivative of the
dimension of the heavy circular string state with respect to the string

Light smoking at base-line predicts a higher mortality risk to women than to men; evidence from a cohort with long follow-up
BACKGROUND: There is conflicting evidence as to whether smoking is more harmful to women than to men. The UK Cotton Workers’ Cohort was recruited in the 1960s and contained a high proportion of men and women smokers who were well matched in terms of age, job and length of time in job. The cohort has been followed up for 42 years. METHODS: Mortality in the cohort was analysed using an individual relative survival method and Cox regression. Whether smoking, ascertained at baseline in the 1960s, was more hazardous to women than to men was examined by estimating the relative risk ratio women to men, smokers to never smoked, for light (1–14), medium (15–24), heavy (25+ cigarettes per day) and former smoking. RESULTS: For all-cause mortality relative risk ratios were 1.35 for light smoking at baseline (95% CI 1.07-1.70), 1.15 for medium smoking (95% CI 0.89-1.49) and 1.00 for heavy smoking (95% CI 0.63-1.61). Relative risk ratios for light smoking at baseline for circulatory system disease was 1.42 (95% CI 1.01 to 1.98) and for respiratory disease was 1.89 (95% CI 0.99 to 3.63). Heights of participants provided no explanation for the gender difference. CONCLUSIONS: Light smoking at baseline was shown to be significantly more hazardous to women than to men but the effect decreased as consumption increased indicating a dose response relationship. Heavy smoking was equally hazardous to both genders. This result may help explain the conflicting evidence seen elsewhere. However gender differences in smoking cessation may provide an alternative explanation
Holographic Correlation Functions for Open Strings and Branes
In this paper, we compute holographically the two-point and three-point
functions of giant gravitons with open strings. We consider the maximal giant
graviton in and the string configurations corresponding to the ground
states of Z=0 and Y=0 open spin chain, and the spinning string in AdS
corresponding to the derivative type impurities in Y=0 or Z=0 open spin chain
as well. We treat the D-brane and open string contribution separately and find
the corresponding D3-brane and string configurations in bulk which connect the
composite operators at the AdS boundary. We apply a new prescription to
treat the string state contribution and find agreements for the two-point
functions. For the three-point functions of two giant gravitons with open
strings and one certain half-BPS chiral primary operator, we find that the
D-brane contributions to structure constant are always vanishing and the open
string contribution for the Y=0 ground state is in perfect match with the
prediction in the free field limit.Comment: 25 page
Three-point correlators for giant magnons
Three-point correlation functions in the strong-coupling regime of the
AdS/CFT correspondence can be analyzed within a semiclassical approximation
when two of the vertex operators correspond to heavy string states having large
quantum numbers while the third vertex corresponds to a light state with fixed
charges. We consider the case where the heavy string states are chosen to be
giant magnon solitons with either a single or two different angular momenta,

Preliminary Report: Missense mutations in the APOL gene family are associated with end stage kidney disease risk previously attributed to the MYH9 gene
MYH9 has been proposed as a major genetic risk locus for a spectrum of
non-diabetic end stage kidney disease (ESKD). We use recently released
sequences from the 1000 Genomes Project to identify two western African
specific missense mutations (S342G and I384M) in the neighbouring APOL1 gene,
and demonstrate that these are more strongly associated with ESKD than
previously reported MYH9 variants. We also show that the distribution of these
risk variants in African populations is consistent with the pattern of African
ancestry ESKD risk previously attributed to the MYH9 gene. Additional
associations were also found among other members of the APOL gene family, and
we propose that ESKD risk is caused by western African variants in members of
the APOL gene family, which evolved to confer protection against pathogens,

Patterns of hepatocellular carcinoma incidence in Egypt from a population-based cancer registry
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is increasing worldwide, and is frequently attributed to rising rates of hepatitis C virus infection and interactions between viral and environmental risk factors. Because of Egypt's unique risk factor profile, we analyzed data from the Gharbiah Population-Based Cancer Registry for the period 1999–2003 to characterize demographic and geographic patterns of cases in this province. Methods:  We calculated age- and sex-specific and age- and sex-standardized HCC incidence rates for the eight districts in Gharbiah. We also compared rates from Gharbiah with the USA (US Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results [SEER] database). Results:  The analysis revealed a higher incidence in males than in females, significant geographic variations among districts, and a higher incidence in Gharbiah than that reported by SEER. Conclusion:  The findings of this study document the heterogeneous distribution of HCC at regional and international levels. Recent trends in chronic disease, impairment and disability among older adults in the United States
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>To examine concurrent prevalence trends of chronic disease, impairment and disability among older adults.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We analyzed the 1998, 2004 and 2008 waves of the Health and Retirement Study, a nationally representative survey of older adults in the United States, and included 31,568 community dwelling adults aged 65 and over. Measurements include: prevalence of chronic diseases including hypertension, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, cancer, chronic lung disease and arthritis; prevalence of impairments, including impairments of cognition, vision, hearing, mobility, and urinary incontinence; prevalence of disability, including activities of daily living (ADLs) and instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The proportion of older adults reporting no chronic disease decreased from 13.1% (95% Confidence Interval [CI], 12.4%-13.8%) in 1998 to 7.8% (95% CI, 7.2%-8.4%) in 2008, whereas the proportion reporting 1 or more chronic diseases increased from 86.9% (95% CI, 86.2%-89.6%) in 1998 to 92.2% (95% CI, 91.6%-92.8%) in 2008. In addition, the proportion reporting 4 or more diseases increased from 11.7% (95% CI, 11.0%-12.4%) in 1998 to 17.4% (95% CI, 16.6%-18.2%) in 2008. The proportion of older adults reporting no impairments was 47.3% (95% CI, 46.3%-48.4%) in 1998 and 44.4% (95% CI, 43.3%-45.5%) in 2008, whereas the proportion of respondents reporting 3 or more was 7.2% (95% CI, 6.7%-7.7%) in 1998 and 7.3% (95% CI, 6.8%-7.9%) in 2008. The proportion of older adults reporting any ADL or IADL disability was 26.3% (95% CI, 25.4%-27.2%) in 1998 and 25.4% (95% CI, 24.5%-26.3%) in 2008.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Multiple chronic disease is increasingly prevalent among older U.S. adults, whereas the prevalence of impairment and disability, while substantial, remain stable.</p
