    Spacecraft component heater control system

    Get PDF
A heater control circuit is disclosed as being constructed in a single integrated circuit, with the integrated circuit conveniently mounted proximate to a spacecraft component requiring temperature control. Redundant heater controllers control power applied to strip heaters disposed to provide heat to a component responsive to sensed temperature from temperature sensors. Signals from these sensors are digitized and compared with a dead band temperature and set point temperature stored in memory to generate an error signal if the sensed temperature is outside the parameter stored in the memory. This error signal is utilized by a microprocessor to selectively instruct the heater controllers to apply power to the strip heaters. If necessary, the spacecraft central processor may access or interrogate the microprocessor in order to alter the set point temperature and dead band temperature range to obtain operational data relating to the operation of an integrated circuit for relaying to the ground control, or to switch off faulty components

    Building End-User Thesauri from Full-Text

    Get PDF
We are interested in the possible contribution of end-user thesauri to the improvement of information retrieval by end- users. Thesauri (from the Greek for treasure or treasury) in information retrieval attempt to record and display relations among concepts and terms -- to be treasuries of concepts and the terms that represent them. End-user thesauri are designed to guide and facilitate end-user searching of textual databases (both full-text databases and reference databases that contain only surrogates of full-texts, such as abstracts). End-user thesauri link: the vocabulary of the searcher and the vocabulary of the database, functioning as part of the user database interface. End-user thesauri are not designed to guide indexing, although they can be used to suggest terms, much like writers have used Roget's thesaurus for centuries

High efficiency InGaAs solar cells on Si by InP layer transfer

    Get PDF
InP/Si substrates were fabricated through wafer bonding and helium-induced exfoliation of InP, and InGaAs solar cells lattice matched to bulk InP were grown on these substrates using metal-organic chemical-vapor deposition. The photovoltaic characteristics of the InGaAs cells fabricated on the wafer-bonded InP/Si substrates were comparable to those synthesized on commercially available epiready InP substrates, thus providing a demonstration of wafer-bonded InP/Si substrates as an alternative to bulk InP substrates for solar cell applications

Unlocking the Doors to Patient Satisfaction in Pediatric Orthopaedics

    Get PDF
Background Many hospitals continue to struggle to improve patient satisfaction as the identification of tangible quality improvement areas remains difficult Medicare hospital payments are linked to patient satisfaction and hospitals\u27 HCAHPS scores, which has contributed to the growing influence of patient satisfaction measures Investigation into the major drivers of patient satisfaction in the pediatric clinical arena has not been thoroughly pursued To determine the main drivers of patient experience in pediatric orthopaedics, we performed an analysis of patient satisfaction surveys collected from outpatient pediatric orthopaedic practices at 5 locations in 3 states Hypothesis: the patient-physician relationship is the most important factor in patients\u27 assessment of their experiences These results may have significance in aiding pediatric orthopaedic clinics in their Quality Assurance/Quality Improvement plans of enhancing the patient experiencehttps://jdc.jefferson.edu/pedsposters/1000/thumbnail.jp

High-resolution measurements of surface topography with airborne laser altimetry and the global positioning system

    Get PDF
Recently, an airborne lidar system that measures laser pulse time-of-flight and the distortion of the pulse waveform upon reflection from earth surface terrain features was developed and is now operational. This instrument is combined with Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers and a two-axis gyroscope for accurate recovery of aircraft position and pointing attitude. The laser altimeter system is mounted on a high-altitude aircraft platform and operated in a repetitively-pulsed mode for measurements of surface elevation profiles at nadir. The laser transmitter makes use of recently developed short-pulse diode-pumped solid-state laser technology in Q-switched Nd:YAG operating at its fundamental wavelength of 1064 nm. A reflector telescope and silicon avalanche photodiode are the basis of the optical receiver. A high-speed time-interval unit and a separate high-bandwidth waveform digitizer under microcomputer control are used to process the backscattered pulses for measurements of terrain. Other aspects of the lidar system are briefly discussed

Phase diagram of a 4-component lipid mixture: DSPC/DOPC/POPC/chol

    Get PDF
AbstractWe report the first 4-component phase diagram for the lipid bilayer mixture, DSPC/DOPC/POPC/chol (distearoylphosphatidylcholine/dioleoylphosphatidylcholine/1-palmitoyl, 2-oleoylphosphatidylcholine/cholesterol). This phase diagram, which has macroscopic Ld+Lo phase domains, clearly shows that all phase boundaries determined for the 3-component mixture containing DOPC transition smoothly into the boundaries for the 3-component mixture containing POPC, which has nanoscopic phase domains of Ld+Lo. Our studies start from two published ternary phase diagrams, and show how these can be combined into a quaternary phase diagram by study of a few hundred samples of intermediate compositions

Photocurrent enhancement in In_(0.53)Ga_(0.47)As solar cells grown on InP/SiO_2/Si transferred epitaxial templates

    Get PDF
InP/Si engineered substrates formed by wafer bonding and layer transfer have the potential to significantly reduce the cost and weight of III-V compound semiconductor solar cells. InP/Si substrates were prepared by He implantation of InP prior to bonding to a thermally oxidized Si substrate and annealing to exfoliate an InP thin film. Following thinning of the transferred InP film to remove surface damage caused by the implantation and exfoliation process, InGaAs solar cells lattice-matched to bulk InP were grown on these substrates using metal-organic chemical vapor deposition. The photovoltaic current-voltage characteristics of the InGaAs cells fabricated on the wafer-bonded InP/Si substrates were comparable to those synthesized on commercially available epi-ready InP substrates, and had a ~20% higher short-circuit current which we attribute to the high reflectivity of the InP/SiO_2/Si bonding interface. This work provides an initial demonstration of wafer-bonded InP/Si substrates as an alternative to bulk InP substrates for solar cell applications
