Though a lot of research has been spent on video retrieval tools and methods which allow for automatic search in videos through content-based queries, still the performance of automatic video retrieval is far from optimal. In this tutorial we discussed (i) proposed solutions for improved video content navigation, (ii) typical interaction of content-based querying features, and (iii) advanced video content visualization methods.     Active learning of soft rules for system modelling

    Using rule learning algorithms to model systems has gained considerable interest in the past. The underlying idea of active learning is to learning algorithm influence the selection of training examples. The presented method estimates the utility of new experiments based on the knowledge represented by the existing rulebase. An extended rule format allows to deal with uncertainty. Experiments with different artificial system functions show that the presented method improves the model quality respectively decreases the number of experiments needed to reach a specific level of performance

    Dynamics between antibiotic drug use and resistance : An economic approach

    In Europe, the emergence and spread of antibiotic resistance (AMR) has become a serious public health threat. Rational antibiotic policy, combined with enforcement of infection control practices are key strategies to combat AMR in the hospital setting. Using timeseries analysis, we calculated potential savings resulting from changes in prescribing behaviour and improved compliance with hand hygiene. According to our calculations, a saving of 14 would be achieved by reducing use of third-generation cephalosporins by one defined daily dose and further savings of almost 60 would be achieved by increasing hospital-wide use of alcohol-based hand rub by one litre. --Economic model,Externality,Antibiotics use,MRSA

    The DNA Binding Properties of the Parsley bZIP Transcription Factor CPRF4a Are Regulated by Light

    The common plant regulatory factors (CPRFs) from parsley are transcription factors with a basic leucine zipper motif that bind to cis-regulatory elements frequently found in promoters of light-regulated genes. Recent studies have revealed that certain CPRF proteins are regulated in response to light by changes in their expression level and in their intracellular localization. Here, we describe an additional mechanism contributing to the light-dependent regulation of CPRF proteins. We show that the DNA binding activity of the factor CPRF4a is modulated in a phosphorylation-dependent manner and that cytosolic components are involved in the regulation of this process. Moreover, we have identified a cytosolic kinase responsible for CPRF4a phosphorylation. Modification of recombinant CPRF4a by this kinase, however, is insufficient to cause a full activation of the factor, suggesting that additional modifications are required. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the DNA binding activity of the factor is modified upon light treatment. The results of additional irradiation experiments suggest that this photoresponse is controlled by different photoreceptor systems. We discuss the possible role of CPRF4a in light signal transduction as well as the emerging regulatory network controlling CPRF activities in parsley

    Thermodynamics of climate change: generalized sensitivities

    Using a recent theoretical approach, we study how global warming impacts the thermodynamics of the climate system by performing experiments with a simplified yet Earth-like climate model. The intensity of the Lorenz energy cycle, the Carnot efficiency, the material entropy production, and the degree of irreversibility of the system change monotonically with the CO2 concentration. Moreover, these quantities feature an approximately linear behaviour with respect to the logarithm of the CO2 concentration in a relatively wide range. These generalized sensitivities suggest that the climate becomes less efficient, more irreversible, and features higher entropy production as it becomes warmer, with changes in the latent heat fluxes playing a predominant role. These results may be of help for explaining recent findings obtained with state of the art climate models regarding how increases in CO2 concentration impact the vertical stratification of the tropical and extratropical atmosphere and the position of the storm tracks

    Online Exploration of Polygons with Holes

    We study online strategies for autonomous mobile robots with vision to explore unknown polygons with at most h holes. Our main contribution is an (h+c_0)!-competitive strategy for such polygons under the assumption that each hole is marked with a special color, where c_0 is a universal constant.
