    In a previous paper a computer program was presented which is able to calculate the long-term performance of solar collectors. The method used implies a knowledge of meteorological data on a daily time basis. In the present paper a comparison is given between the results obtained with the above-mentioned method and those arising from methods involving hourly-defined meteorological data. The agreement between the two is found to be satisfactory.

    Improvement of Graft Function after Conversion to Once Daily Tacrolimus of Stable Kidney Transplant Patients

    Background. Chronic renal dysfunction is present in about one quarter of kidney transplant patients at 1 year and in about 90% by 10 years. Nephrotoxicity caused by calcineurin inhibitors is among the most common factors. Elevated tacrolimus levels have been correlated with worse control of side effects including acute and/or chronic nephrotoxicity. The aim of this study was to observe the effects on graft function of conversion from the twice daily to the once daily extended release tacrolimus formulation in stable kidney transplant recipients within 5 years of grafting. Methods. Thirty-one stable kidney transplant patients were converted at the same dosage (1 mg:1 mg). Patients served as their own controls based on results before versus after conversion. Results. The trough levels of tacrolimus showed a slight albeit significant reduction after the conversion. Serum creatinine and glomerular filtration rate showed a significant improvement without an association with the tacrolimus trough levels. Conclusion. We suggest that the immunosuppression with once daily tacrolimus may be a good option for kidney transplant patients

    Polyomavirus BK replication in liver transplant candidates with normal renal function

    Abstract: Polyomavirus-associated nephropathy (PVAN) has a predilection for kidney rather than for other solid organ transplants such as the liver. Immunosuppression is widely recognized to be a major risk factor for PVAN development. Since end-stage liver disease (ESLD) patients are immunocompromised and immunosuppression is a major cause of BK virus reactivation, we sought to evaluate BK virus replication in patients listed for liver transplantation. From April to October 2010, we enrolled 20 patients listed for liver transplantation. BK virus load was measured by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction on plasma and urine samples. Viremia occurred in only 1 among 20 patients. We hypothesized that in ESLD patients, the low prevalence of BK virus infection may be related to the prevalent impairment of antibacterial immunity rather than to the viral-specific one.     NEOTROPICAL CARNIVORES: a data set on carnivore distribution in the Neotropics

    Mammalian carnivores are considered a key group in maintaining ecological health and can indicate potential ecological integrity in landscapes where they occur. Carnivores also hold high conservation value and their habitat requirements can guide management and conservation plans. The order Carnivora has 84 species from 8 families in the Neotropical region: Canidae; Felidae; Mephitidae; Mustelidae; Otariidae; Phocidae; Procyonidae; and Ursidae. Herein, we include published and unpublished data on native terrestrial Neotropical carnivores (Canidae; Felidae; Mephitidae; Mustelidae; Procyonidae; and Ursidae). NEOTROPICAL CARNIVORES is a publicly available data set that includes 99,605 data entries from 35,511 unique georeferenced coordinates. Detection/non-detection and quantitative data were obtained from 1818 to 2018 by researchers, governmental agencies, non-governmental organizations, and private consultants. Data were collected using several methods including camera trapping, museum collections, roadkill, line transect, and opportunistic records. Literature (peer-reviewed and grey literature) from Portuguese, Spanish and English were incorporated in this compilation. Most of the data set consists of detection data entries (n = 79,343; 79.7%) but also includes non-detection data (n = 20,262; 20.3%). Of those, 43.3% also include count data (n = 43,151). The information available in NEOTROPICAL CARNIVORES will contribute to macroecological, ecological, and conservation questions in multiple spatio-temporal perspectives. As carnivores play key roles in trophic interactions, a better understanding of their distribution and habitat requirements are essential to establish conservation management plans and safeguard the future ecological health of Neotropical ecosystems. Our data paper, combined with other large-scale data sets, has great potential to clarify species distribution and related ecological processes within the Neotropics. There are no copyright restrictions and no restriction for using data from this data paper, as long as the data paper is cited as the source of the information used.
