Are Educated Societies Less Violent? Education, Deprivation and Crime in Minas Gerais
The intuition behind this paper is that education has a significant role to play in the reduction crime policies in developing countries. In other words, the fact that universal education is not completed in developing countries could be one of the reasons of their high crime rates. This paper brings an augmented economic model of individual crime behavior in order to take into account relative deprivation, discusses the impact of education in this model, distinguishing between property and interpersonal crime and furnishes an econometric estimation of the model for 723 municipalities of Minas Gerais, one of the 26 Brazilian states. Violent property crime seems to be influenced directly by inequality but not by education, which has however a significant reducing effect upon interpersonal violence.Brazil, education, deprivation, violence, crime
How Do Criminals Locate? Crime and Spatial Dependence in Minas Gerais
The aim of this paper is to investigate the existence of a spatial dependence of crime rates at a local level in the case of municipalities of Minas Gerais, one of the 26 Brazilian states. Results suggest the existence of a positive spatial autocorrelation of municipal violent crime rates. However, it also appears that violent crime against property and against persons do not follow the same spatial behavior. While violent economic crime seems to spread a lot, interpersonal violence is a much more localized phenomenon.violent crime, spatial autocorrelation, Brazil
Macro-Economic Instability and Crime
This paper adds to the literature on the economic determinants of crime by examining the impact of macro-economic instability. Instability increases the frustration level of individuals and incites them to smooth their income by using illegal earnings. Results from a panel of developed and developing countries for the period 1980-97 suggests that macro-economic instability had a significant impact on crime, both homicide and robbery. However, homicide and robbery do not react to instability in the same way.macro-economic instability, crime, institutions
Education, police et criminalité : une étude de cas du Minas Gerais à l'aide d'un modèle d'équilibre général calculable
The aim of this paper is to study the trade-off between public expenditures in education and police in the framework of the fight against violent crime. The study uses a computable general equilibrium model (CGE) built upon the economy of Minas Gerais, a Brazilian state. Main results suggest a comparable reducing effect of both type of expenditures on crime, though this effect is strongly dependant on other simultaneous social policies

Dépenses publiques d’éducation et instabilité politique : une application àla zone franc par un modèle d’Equilibre Général Calculable
The aim of this paper is to test for franc zone the hypothesis that public expenditures in education can act negatively on political instability, and by way, can be positively correlated with economic growth, even on the short run. To do so, a rebellion model is estimated econometrically and introduced in a computable general equilibrium model (CGE) calibrated for franc zone.CGE models, public expenditures in education, Political instability
