    Development and collapse of an Oscillatoria bloom in Loch Leven during July 1994

    During 1994, weekly spot-sampling of open water sites on Loch Leven took place from 16th March onwards. Very little difference between spot-sampling sites was observed from 16th March to 5th July. Throughout April and May there was a slow increase in levels of chlorophyll-a, followed by a rapid increase through June, reaching a maximum of 230 micrograms per litre. On 8th July there was a very rapid rise in water temperature, with a corresponding increase in dissolved oxygen and pH. At 0915 hours on 9th July there was a drop in all three variables. These changes were coincident with a marked reduction in chlorophyll-a values falling to 70 micrograms per litre on 12th July. On 16th July evidence of a resurgence of photosynthesis was observed

    Loch Leven lies in a glacial depression 35 kilometres north of Edinburgh,Scotland. It has a large surface area, 13.3 km², but is generally shallowwith a mean depth of 3.9 metres, although there are two deeper "holes"where the depth reaches 25 metres. Land use in the 145 km² catchmentdraining to the loch is predominantly arable farming, with some roughgrazing in the headwaters and with three small towns close to the loch.The physical characteristics of Loch Leven are fully described by Smith(1974); it is a National Nature Reserve, a Site of Special ScientificInterest, and is cited under the Ramsar Convention as a wetland site ofinternational importance

    The contribution of refractoriness to arrhythmic substrate in hypokalemic Langendorff-perfused murine hearts

    The clinical effects of hypokalemia including action potential prolongation and arrhythmogenicity suppressible by lidocaine were reproduced in hypokalemic (3.0 mM K(+)) Langendorff-perfused murine hearts before and after exposure to lidocaine (10 μM). Novel limiting criteria for local and transmural, epicardial, and endocardial re-excitation involving action potential duration (at 90% repolarization, APD(90)), ventricular effective refractory period (VERP), and transmural conduction time (Δlatency), where appropriate, were applied to normokalemic (5.2 mM K(+)) and hypokalemic hearts. Hypokalemia increased epicardial APD(90) from 46.6 ± 1.2 to 53.1 ± 0.7 ms yet decreased epicardial VERP from 41 ± 4 to 29 ± 1 ms, left endocardial APD(90) unchanged (58.2 ± 3.7 to 56.9 ± 4.0 ms) yet decreased endocardial VERP from 48 ± 4 to 29 ± 2 ms, and left Δlatency unchanged (1.6 ± 1.4 to 1.1 ± 1.1 ms; eight normokalemic and five hypokalemic hearts). These findings precisely matched computational predictions based on previous reports of altered ion channel gating and membrane hyperpolarization. Hypokalemia thus shifted all re-excitation criteria in the positive direction. In contrast, hypokalemia spared epicardial APD(90) (54.8 ± 2.7 to 60.6 ± 2.7 ms), epicardial VERP (84 ± 5 to 81 ± 7 ms), endocardial APD(90) (56.6 ± 4.2 to 63.7 ± 6.4 ms), endocardial VERP (80 ± 2 to 84 ± 4 ms), and Δlatency (12.5 ± 6.2 to 7.6 ± 3.4 ms; five hearts in each case) in lidocaine-treated hearts. Exposure to lidocaine thus consistently shifted all re-excitation criteria in the negative direction, again precisely agreeing with the arrhythmogenic findings. In contrast, established analyses invoking transmural dispersion of repolarization failed to account for any of these findings. We thus establish novel, more general, criteria predictive of arrhythmogenicity that may be particularly useful where APD(90) might diverge sharply from VERP

    Analysis of MCQ and distractor use in a large first year Health Faculty Foundation Program: assessing the effects of changing from five to four options

    Abstract Background Multiple choice questions are commonly used in summative assessment. It is still common practice for tertiary institutions and accrediting bodies to use five-option single best answer multiple choice questions, despite a substantial body of evidence showing that multiple choice questions with only three or four options provide effective and discriminatory assessment. Methods In this study we investigated the distribution of distractor efficacy in exams from four large first-year undergraduate courses in chemistry and in anatomy and physiology in a Health Faculty; assessed the impact on overall student score after changing from five-option to four-option single best answer multiple choice questions; and assessed the impact of changing from five options to four options on item difficulty and discrimination. Results For the five-option questions analysed, 19% had four effective distractors, which is higher than previous studies, but still a minority of questions. After changing from five to four options, the overall student performance on all multiple choice questions was slightly lower in the second offering of one course, slightly higher in the second offering of another course, and similar in the second offering for two courses. For a subset of questions that were used in both offerings, there were negligible differences in item difficulty and item discrimination between offerings. Conclusions These results provide further evidence that five-option questions are not superior to four-option questions, with reduction to four options making little if any difference to overall performance, particularly when MCQ is used in conjunction with other assessment types (including short answer questions, and practical or laboratory assessment). Further areas of study that arise from these findings are: to investigate the reasons for resistance to changing established assessment practice within institutions and by accrediting bodies; and to analyse student perceptions of the impact of a reduced number of options in MCQ-based assessment

    Water Framework Directive Intercalibration Technical Report: Northern Lake Benthic invertebrate ecological assessment methods

    One of the key actions identified by the Water Framework Directive (WFD; 2000/60/EC) is to develop ecological assessment tools and carry out a European intercalibration (IC) exercise. The aim of the Intercalibration is to ensure that the values assigned by each Member State to the good ecological class boundaries are consistent with the Directive’s generic description of these boundaries and comparable to the boundaries proposed by other MS. In total, 83 lake assessment methods were submitted for the 2nd phase of the WFD intercalibration (2008-2012) and 62 intercalibrated and included in the EC Decision on Intercalibration (EC 2013). The intercalibration was carried out in the 13 Lake Geographical Intercalibration Groups according to the ecoregion and biological quality element. In this report we describe how the intercalibration exercise has been carried out in the Northern Lake Benthic invertebrate group.JRC.H.1-Water Resource
