The organic solid state appears in a complex number of forms. The design, synthesis and application of solid state organic materials have a big impact upon society, e.g. pharmaceuticals. Traditionally, the process of selecting active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) was limited to free drug or accepted salt formulations. The cocrystallisation of APIs with a former molecule significantly increases the developmental options for APIs. Many pharmaceutical solids are prepared as polycrystalline materials in order to deliver favourable physical properties, i.e. solubility, bioavailability and stability. In such cases, the development and application of structure solution techniques via powder X-ray diffraction (pxrd) has played an ever increasing pivotal role. In this thesis a number of new multi-component materials; oxamic acid:nicotinamide, oxamic acid:isonicotinamide, fumaric acid:nicotinamide, maleic acid:nicotinamide and maleic acid:isonicotinamide, will be synthesised, via a number of synthetic methods, and fully structurally characterised. A direct comparison of structures solved by powder and single crystal diffraction, have been made in order to evaluate the reliability of structure solution from pxrd in these types of materials. The thermal behaviour of molecular materials will be presented as significant structural information can be extracted from the anisotropic expansion of molecular materials. In conjunction with the research into new multi-component materials, the structure solution of oxamic acid via pxrd, single X-ray diffraction and neutron diffraction will be investigated. Small organic molecular materials like oxamic acid provide a challenge to the crystallographer due to the similarities in the electron density surrounding each functional group in the molecule
Calibration of Viking imaging system pointing, image extraction, and optical navigation measure
Pointing control and knowledge accuracy of Viking Orbiter science instruments is controlled by the scan platform. Calibration of the scan platform and the imaging system was accomplished through mathematical models. The calibration procedure and results obtained for the two Viking spacecraft are described. Included are both ground and in-flight scan platform calibrations, and the additional calibrations unique to optical navigation
On the Nature of Precursors in the Radio Pulsar Profiles
In the average profiles of several radio pulsars, the main pulse is
accompanied by the preceding component. This so called precursor is known for
its distinctive polarization, spectral, and fluctuation properties. Recent
single-pulse observations hint that the sporadic activity at the extreme
leading edge of the pulse may be prevalent in pulsars. We for the first time
propose a physical mechanism of this phenomenon. It is based on the induced
scattering of the main pulse radiation into the background. We show that the
scattered component is directed approximately along the ambient magnetic field
and, because of rotational aberration in the scattering region, appears in the
pulse profile as a precursor to the main pulse. Our model naturally explains
high linear polarization of the precursor emission, its spectral and
fluctuation peculiarities as well as suggests a specific connection between the
precursor and the main pulse at widely spaced frequencies. This is believed to
stimulate multifrequency single-pulse studies of intensity modulation in

Tests of a multichannel photometer based on silicon diode detectors
A breadboard photometer was constructed that demonstrates a precision of 2 times 10 to the 4th power in the laboratory and scintillation-limited performance when used with an 0.5 m aperture telescope. Because the detectors and preamps are not cooled, only stars with m sub v approx. less than 4 are bright enough to allow the photometer to attain a precision of 1 times 10 to the 3rd power for three minute observations with an 0.5 m aperature telescope. Cooling the telescope should allow much fainter stars to be observed. Increasing the aperture of the telescope will allow higher precision and the observation of fainter stars
On a Tree and a Path with no Geometric Simultaneous Embedding
Two graphs and admit a geometric simultaneous
embedding if there exists a set of points P and a bijection M: P -> V that
induce planar straight-line embeddings both for and for . While it
is known that two caterpillars always admit a geometric simultaneous embedding
and that two trees not always admit one, the question about a tree and a path
is still open and is often regarded as the most prominent open problem in this
area. We answer this question in the negative by providing a counterexample.
Additionally, since the counterexample uses disjoint edge sets for the two
graphs, we also negatively answer another open question, that is, whether it is
possible to simultaneously embed two edge-disjoint trees. As a final result, we
study the same problem when some constraints on the tree are imposed. Namely,
we show that a tree of depth 2 and a path always admit a geometric simultaneous
embedding. In fact, such a strong constraint is not so far from closing the gap
with the instances not admitting any solution, as the tree used in our
counterexample has depth 4.Comment: 42 pages, 33 figure
A millimeter-wave antireflection coating for cryogenic silicon lenses
We have developed and tested an antireflection (AR) coating method for
silicon lenses at cryogenic temperatures and millimeter wavelengths. Our
particular application is a measurement of the cosmic microwave background. The
coating consists of machined pieces of Cirlex glued to the silicon. The
measured reflection from an AR coated flat piece is less than 1.5% at the
design wavelength. The coating has been applied to flats and lenses and has
survived multiple thermal cycles from 300 to 4 K. We present the manufacturing
method, the material properties, the tests performed, and estimates of the loss
that can be achieved in practical lenses
Emotional dysfunction in schizophrenia spectrum psychosis: the role of illness perceptions
Background. Assessing illness perceptions has been useful in a range of medical disorders. This study of people with a recent relapse of their psychosis examines the relationship between illness perception, their emotional responses and their attitudes to medication.Method. One hundred patients diagnosed with a non-affective psychotic disorder were assessed within 3 months of relapse. Measures included insight, self-reported. illness perceptions, medication adherence, depression, self-esteem and anxiety.Results. Illness perceptions about psychosis explained 46, 36 and 34% of the variance in depression, anxiety and self-esteem respectively. However, self-reported medication adherence was more strongly associated with a measure of insight.Conclusions. Negative illness perceptions in psychosis are clearly related to depression, anxiety and self-esteem. These in turn have been linked to symptom maintenance and recurrence. Clinical interventions that foster appraisals of recovery rather than of chronicity and severity may therefore improve emotional well-being in people with psychosis. It might be better to address adherence to medication through direct attempts at helping them understand their need for treatment
Investigation of mesoscale cloud features viewed by LANDSAT
The author has identified the following significant results. Some 50 LANDSAT images displaying mesoscale cloud features were analyzed. This analysis was based on the Rayleigh-Kuettner model describing the formation of that type of mesoscale cloud feature. This model lends itself to computation of the average wind speed in northerly flow from the dimensions of the cloud band configurations measured from a LANDSAT image. In nearly every case, necessary conditions of a curved wind profile and orientation of the cloud streets within 20 degrees of the direction of the mean wind in the convective layer were met. Verification of the results by direct observation was hampered, however, by the incompatibility of the resolution of conventional rawinsonde observations with the scale of the banded cloud patterns measured from LANDSAT data. Comparison seems to be somewhat better in northerly flows than in southerly flows, with the largest discrepancies in wind speed being within 8m/sec, or a factor of two
