    Inverse Cotton-Mouton effect of the Vacuum and of atomic systems

    In this letter we calculate the Inverse Cotton-Mouton Effect (ICME) for the vacuum following the predictions of Quantum ElectroDynamics. We compare the value of this effect for the vacuum with the one expected for atomic systems. We finally show that ICME could be measured for the first time for noble gases using state-of-the-art laser systems and for the quantum vacuum with near-future laser facilities like ELI and HiPER, providing in particular a test of the nonlinear behaviour of quantum vacuum at intensities below the Schwinger limit of 4.5x10^33 W/m^2.Comment: Submitted to EP

    Observation of the Inverse Cotton-Mouton Effect

    We report the observation of the Inverse Cotton-Mouton Effect (ICME) i.e. a magnetization induced in a medium by non resonant linearly polarized light propagating in the presence of a transverse magnetic field. We present a detailed study of the ICME in a TGG crystal showing the dependence of the measured effect on the light intensity, the optical polarization, and on the external magnetic field. We derive a relation between the Cotton-Mouton and Inverse Cotton-Mouton effects that is roughly in agreement with existing experimental data. Our results open the way to applications of the ICME in optical devices

    No light shining through a wall : new results from a photoregeneration experiment

    Recently, axion-like particle search has received renewed interest. In particular, several groups have started ``light shining through a wall'' experiments based on magnetic field and laser both continuous, which is very demanding in terms of detector background. We present here the 2σ\sigma limits obtained so far with our novel set-up consisting of a pulsed magnetic field and a pulsed laser. In particular, we have found that the axion-like particle two photons inverse coupling constant MM is >8×105> 8\times 10^5 GeV provided that the particle mass ma∌m_\mathrm{a} \sim 1 meV. Our results definitively invalidate the axion interpretation of the original PVLAS optical measurements with a confidence level greater than 99.9%.Comment: Version that will appear in Physical Review Letters, Vol. 99, n. 18, (2 Nov 2007

    The BMV project: Search for photon oscillations into massive particles

    In this contribution to PSAS08 we report on the research activities developed in our Toulouse group, in the framework of the BMV project, concerning the search for photon oscillations into massive particles, such as axion-like particles in the presence of a strong transverse magnetic field. We recall our main result obtained in collaboration with LULI at \'Ecole Polytechnique (Palaiseau, France).     Validation of a point-of-care quantitative equine IgG turbidimetric immunoassay and comparison of IgG concentrations measured with radial immunodiffusion and a point-of-care IgG ELISA

    Background: Point-of-care (POC) diagnostic tests with good sensitivity and specificity are needed for diagnosing failure of transfer of passive immunity (FTPI) in foals. Turbidimetric immunoassays (TIA) have these characteristics and provide quantitative results. A commercially available TIA-based POC test (POC-TIA) has not been validated in horses. Objective: To validate a POC-TIA and compare results of POC-TIA, a POC-ELISA, and radial immunodiffusion (RID). Animals: Heparinized blood samples (n = 127) from 48 hospitalized foals (<12 hour to 48 days). Methods: Prospective validation study. IgG concentrations were measured using RID (gold standard), POC-TIA, and POC-ELISA. Agreement between assays was assessed using Bland–Altman analysis. Sensitivity and specificity were calculated using ROC curves. Inter- and intra-assay coefficients of variation (CVs) and linearity were evaluated for POC-TIA. Results: The mean bias (95% limits of agreement) between RID and POC-TIA was −4 (−185 to 176), 27 (−201 to 255), and 308 (−377 to 993) mg/dL for samples with IgG concentrations of 800 mg/dL, respectively. Sensitivity and specificity at optimal cutoff were 94 and 100% for the POC-TIA and 94 and 100% for the POC-ELISA to detect IgG 0.96). Conclusions and Clinical Importance: The POC-TIA provided unambiguous results and had sufficient sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, and precision to be used as an alternative to other POC tests to assess FTPI in foals

    Pre-analytical stability of sorbitol dehydrogenase in equine heparinized plasma.

    Sorbitol dehydrogenase (SDH) activity is one of the most sensitive and specific markers for hepatocellular injury in horses, but its reported lability makes it impractical for use in many clinical settings. To date, stability of SDH in equine samples has only been evaluated in a limited number of studies in serum samples of horses with activities within reference intervals. The objective of the study was to determine pre-analytical stability of equine SDH activity in heparinized plasma stored at different temperatures for up to 72 h. Twenty client-owned horses admitted to a veterinary teaching hospital for any reason were included in the study. Blood samples collected in lithium-heparin tubes were immediately centrifuged and SDH activity was analyzed within 1 h of collection (T0). Aliquots of plasma were stored at room temperature, 4 °C and -20 °C and SDH activity was re-analyzed after 4 h (T4), 24 h (T24) and 72 h (T72). A significant difference from values measured at T0 was found for samples stored at room temperature (P = 0.022) and -20 °C (P < 0.001), but not at 4 °C. The activity of SDH was within ±20% of that measured at T0 for all samples under all temperature conditions stored for 4 h, and for all samples stored at 4 °C for 24 h. Bland-Altman plots revealed narrow limits of agreement at T4 for all storage temperatures and at T24 for samples stored at 4 °C. The mean absolute percentage error and 95th percentile of the absolute percentage error were lower for samples stored at 4 °C than those stored at room temperature or -20 °C. The activity of SDH has adequate stability for 4 h regardless of storage temperature and 24 h if stored at 4 °C across a wide range of values. Knowledge of the pre-analytical stability of SDH may permit its broader use in assessing hepatic disorders in horses

    Resilience enabling processes and posttraumatic growth outcomes in a group of women survivors of childhood sexual abuse

    Background: This study forms part of a pilot project, aiming to evaluate the benefits of a programme entitled S2T denoting from Survivor to Thriver, which is a collaborative strengths-based group intervention programme for women survivors of childhood sexual abuse. The objective of the S2T is to enable resilience processes and facilitate posttraumatic growth outcomes. A theory of change was developed to explain how these objectives are met, it outlines the theoretical approach, mediators, primary and secondary outcomes. Aim: To explore emerging resilience processes and posttraumatic growth outcomes in women survivors of childhood sexual abuse after attending the S2T. Setting: Data was collected during group treatment sessions of the S2T group intervention programme with women survivors of childhood sexual abuse. Methods: A quasi-experimental, one group, pretest, posttest, time-delay design was used with eight purposively selected women with a history of childhood sexual abuse, using qualitative methods to evaluate the benefit of this intervention. Nine group treatment sessions and a delayed follow-up session were conducted. A visual participatory technique and transcriptions of group sessions were used to collect qualitative data. Results: Qualitative thematic analysis revealed the following enabling resilience processes: group as healing vehicle of change; changing destructive to constructive rumination; coping strengths and meaning-making. Posttraumatic growth outcomes which evolved were: transforming wounded to healer; a changed life philosophy; excavated spirituality and re-briefing strengths through a posttrauma thriver identity. Conclusions: The themes suggest resilience processes and posttraumatic growth outcomes; a longitudinal study is recommended to establish effectiveness and inform treatment practice

    Characterisation of Pinotage Wine During Maturation on Different Oak Products

    The effect of oak contact on the phenolic composition, total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and colour of Pinotage wineswas investigated during maturation. Oak maturation included traditional treatments, such as new, second-fill andthird-fill barrels, as well as alternative treatments (oak chips, staves, extract and dust) applied in old barrels over aperiod of 28 weeks. Oak maturation using traditional and alternative treatments improved the objective colour ofPinotage wine by decreasing the L* value. Losses in TAC caused by decreased concentrations of monomeric phenoliccompounds (most anthocyanins, flavan-3-ols, flavonols and hydroxycinnamic acids) during oak maturation werenegated by increased concentrations of gallic acid and the formation of new oligomeric and polymeric pigments.Wine maturation in stainless steel containers also resulted in a decrease in anthocyanin content. The decreasein phenolic acid content for wines matured in stainless steel was less pronounced, while their flavan-3-ol contentremained stable. The new-barrel treatment had the most pronounced effect on all parameters. Oak maturation canbe used for the production of Pinotage wine when the retention of TAC is a high priority
