Multiwavelength studies of MHD waves in the solar chromosphere: An overview of recent results

    Get PDF
The chromosphere is a thin layer of the solar atmosphere that bridges the relatively cool photosphere and the intensely heated transition region and corona. Compressible and incompressible waves propagating through the chromosphere can supply significant amounts of energy to the interface region and corona. In recent years an abundance of high-resolution observations from state-of-the-art facilities have provided new and exciting ways of disentangling the characteristics of oscillatory phenomena propagating through the dynamic chromosphere. Coupled with rapid advancements in magnetohydrodynamic wave theory, we are now in an ideal position to thoroughly investigate the role waves play in supplying energy to sustain chromospheric and coronal heating. Here, we review the recent progress made in characterising, categorising and interpreting oscillations manifesting in the solar chromosphere, with an impetus placed on their intrinsic energetics.Comment: 48 pages, 25 figures, accepted into Space Science Review

GaAs JFETs intended for deep cryogenic VLWIR readout electronics

    No full text
GaAs junction field-effect transistors (JFETs) are promising for deep cryogenic (<10K) readout electronics applications. This paper presents the structure and fabrication of GaAs JFETs and their performance at 4 K. It is shown that these JFETs operate normally at 4 K, with no anomalous behavior such as kinks or hysteresis. The noise voltage follows a 1/√f dependence and is approximately [MATH] at 1 Hz for a ring JFET that is 1250 µm in circumference and 5 µm long. The gate leakage current reaches 1 pA at a gate voltage of -6 V

    Optically programmable gate array

The Optically Programmable Gate Array (OPGA), an optical version of a conventional FPGA, benefits from a direct parallel interface between an optical memory and a logic circuit. The OPGA utilizes a holographic memory accessed by an array of VCSELs to program its logic. An active pixel sensor array incorporated into the OPGA chip makes it possible to optically address the logic in a very short time allowing for rapid dynamic reconfiguration. Combining spatial and shift multiplexing to store the configuration pages in the memory, the OPGA module can be made compact. The reconfiguration capability of the OPGA can be applied to solve more efficiently problems in pattern recognition and database search

    Capillary haemangioma of the testis

    No full text
A case of testicular capillary haemangioma is reported and the importance of intraoperative examination of this very rare lesion emphasised. Capillary haemangioma of the testis can be similar to malignant testicular tumours on clinical presentation, as well as on ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging, and therefore should be included in the intraoperative differential diagnosis. Because of the benign nature of this lesion, conservative surgical treatment by means of tumour enucleation with preservation of the testis is possible, if intraoperative examination of frozen sections of representative tissue can be performed.
