Exploring the Identity Development of Second Generation Filipino-Americans

    Get PDF
First-generation Filipinos come to the United States in order to start a new life, provide for their families back home, seeking to fulfill their own “American Dream”, and become U.S citizens just like all immigrants. The population of Filipino-Americans is increasing as more aspire to move to the States as many have done before. Simultaneously, cultures of both worlds blur together in one’s upbringing. Second-generation Filipino-Americans, children of at least one or both first-generation Filipino-Americans, go through leaps and hurdles in their quest of delving into their ethnic identity. One’s identity can be defined by many attributes of culture, but it can be a tedious task when trying to navigate a history that may not fit an Asian-American narrative which may be focused on East Asian descent. The Philippines’ colonized history can question one whether one is Asian, Pacific Islander, or Hispanic enough. The liminality, or being in a limbo, within two cultures and embracing them is a continuing process. For my project, I decipher how young second-generation Filipino-Americans bridge or further the gap between their parents and how communities out of tradition, religion, sexuality, gender, and locality affect how one defines themselves. I examine how the second-generation today dispels the first-generation’s colonial mentality through their use of media influences, creating movements of reclaiming one’s culture by destigmatizing beauty standards, and how it conjures up solidarity in being proud of their ethnic roots

Vascular effects of rapid-acting insulin analogs in the diabetic patient: a review

    Get PDF
The insulin analogs lispro, aspart, and glulisine are the only commercially available rapid-acting insulins to treat diabetes. We review the evidence for treating hyperglycemia, using insulin, and specifically using rapid-acting analogs in diabetic individuals, on the prevention of vascular events. We review the beneficial effects of insulin on the vascular system, which include vasodilation and anti-inflammatory actions. The effects of treating hyperglycemia and intensive blood glucose control on vascular outcomes are reviewed

An Optimization Model for Processed Food-grade Flour from Off-grade Cavendish Banana Supply Chain Network Design

One of the fundamental issues in Philippine agriculture is the low income of small-scale farmers of Cavendish banana despite the increasing demand for it. The AMS Employees’ Fresh Fruits Producers Cooperative (AMSEFFPCO), for instance, was observed to generate unpleasing profit in the production process of converting off-grade Cavendish banana into food-grade flour. We hypothesized that the profit may be increased by determining the optimal number of components of the production process, i.e., the number of delivery trucks and mills to be operated, as well as the number of nonregular (e.g., peelers, washers) and regular laborers (e.g., slicers, dryers) to be hired. From the constructed supply chain network design of the production process, we formulated and solveda mixed integer linear programming model to obtain the optimal values of the components. Our findings showed that the profit of the cooperative can be maximized if they operate two trucks and one mill and hire nine nonregular laborers and fourteen regular laborers. Moreover, we also studied how the changes in the volume of supplied off-grade bananas affect the values of the optimal components of the supply chain. By implementing the results of this study, the cooperative is expected to generate approximately PhP 9000 per batch delivery, i.e., 4000 kg of off-grade bananas. The methodology developed in this study can also be applied in other banana producer’s organization with similar supply chain network

The Effects of Retrogression and Reaging on Aluminum Alloy 2099 (C458)

    Get PDF
The objective of this study was to investigate the feasibility of performing retrogression and reaging (RRA) heat treatments on 2099 aluminum-lithium alloy. The retrogression temperatures were 200-250 A degrees C and retrogression times were 5-60 min. Half of the samples were exposed to a salt fog environment. Interestingly, the samples exposed to salt spray had consistently higher mechanical tensile properties than those which were not exposed

The Effects of Retrogression and Reaging on Aluminum Alloy 2195

A retrogression and reaging (RRA) treatment was performed on 2195 Al-Li Alloy. The exposure times were from 5 to 60 min, and the temperatures were from 200 to 250 A degrees C. Samples that were exposed to a salt spray test had overall similar mechanical properties as compared to those that were not exposed. The percent elongation, however, was significantly deteriorated due to the salt spray exposure. The mechanical properties of the 2195 samples were compared to those of 2099 samples exposed to similar treatments in an earlier study

Newspaper Editorial Stands on Broadcast Indecency Regulation: Profits over Principles?

The issue of broadcast indecency is a significant one for media organizations because it goes to the heart of debates about freedom of speech and the press. This study asks the question: What factors may have influenced editorial posturing on this issue

On Any Given Sunday? Measuring the Newsworthiness of Sunday Morning National Public Affairs Programs

    No full text
Sunday morning network television interview programs are believed to be important sources for media coverage for the coming week. Yet, almost no research exists confirming this supposition. A search of references to major Sunday political talk shows produced from 1961 to 2009 on the front page of the New York Times, regarded as an elite and influential publication, found these programs deserve much of their reputation for newsworthiness. Thus, television can influence the coverage of an elite print outlet, reversing the usual pattern. The study also revealed NBC\u27s Meet the Press was the most newsworthy of these political talk programs

Native son? Comparing coverage of Barack Obama\u27s birthplace controversy in Hawaiian, Kenyan and Washington, DC, media

    No full text
This study utilizes a comparative, content analysis of coverage of the Obama ‘Birther’ controversy from 2008 to 2012 in newspapers from relevant geographic locales – Hawaii, Kenya and Washington, DC – in order to determine whether and how localism impacted the framing and portrayal of the dispute to different audiences, as well as to see how responsibly journalists treated this topic. There were geographic differences in the amount and nature of coverage, though all the outlets gave more space to the anti-Obama side than the President’s. In other respects, however, the Kenyan and Hawaiian papers appeared to be more factual and responsible in debunking the false claims about Obama’s birthplace, while the DC papers viewed it more as a political conflict. The article concludes that while localism can lead to more responsible journalism, the case may instead suggest that media organizations are driven by audience more than truth concerns, even in coverage of conspiracy theories
