    Remnant Colloform Pyrite at the Haile Gold Deposit, South Carolina: A Textural Key to Genesis

    Auriferous iron sulfide-bearing deposits of the Carolina slate belt have distinctive mineralogical and textural features—traits that provide a basis to construct models of ore deposition. Our identification of paragenetically early types of pyrite, especially remnant colloform, crustiform, and layered growth textures of pyrite containing electrum and pyrrhotite, establishes unequivocally that gold mineralization was coeval with deposition of host rocks and not solely related to Paleozoic tectonic events. Ore horizons at the Haile deposit, South Carolina, contain many remnants of early pyrite: (1) fine-grained cubic pyrite disseminated along bedding; (2) finegrained spongy, rounded masses of pyrite that may envelop or drape over pyrite cubes; (3) fragments of botryoidally and crustiform layered pyrite, and (4) pyritic infilling of vesicles and pumice. Detailed mineral chemistry by petrography, microprobe, SEM, and EDS analysis of replaced pumice and colloform structures containing both arsenic compositional banding and electrum points to coeval deposition of gold and the volcanic host rocks and, thus, confirms a syngenetic origin for the gold deposits. Early pyrite textures are present in other major deposits of the Carolina slate belt, such as Ridgeway and Barite Hill, and these provide strong evidence for models whereby the sulfide ores formed prior to tectonism. The role of Paleozoic metamorphism was to remobilize and concentrate gold and other minerals in structurally prepared sites. Recognizing the significance of paragenetically early pyrite and gold textures can play an important role in distinguishing sulfide ores that form in volcanic and sedimentary environments from those formed solely by metamorphic processes. Exploration strategies applied to the Carolina slate belt and correlative rocks in the eastern United States in the Avalonian basement will benefit from using syngenetic models for gold mineralization

    Mosaic evolution and the pattern of transitions in the hominin lineage.

    Humans are uniquely unique, in terms of the extreme differences between them and other living organisms, and the impact they are having on the biosphere. The evolution of humans can be seen, as has been proposed, as one of the major transitions in evolution, on a par with the origins of multicellular organisms or the eukaryotic cell (Maynard Smith & Szathmáry 1997 Major transitions in evolution). Major transitions require the evolution of greater complexity and the emergence of new evolutionary levels or processes. Does human evolution meet these conditions? I explore the diversity of evidence on the nature of transitions in human evolution. Four levels of transition are proposed-baseline, novel taxa, novel adaptive zones and major transitions-and the pattern of human evolution considered in the light of these. The primary conclusions are that changes in human evolution occur continuously and cumulatively; that novel taxa and the appearance of new adaptations are not clustered very tightly in particular periods, although there are three broad transitional phases (Pliocene, Plio-Pleistocene and later Quaternary). Each phase is distinctive, with the first based on ranging and energetics, the second on technology and niche expansion, and the third on cognition and cultural processes. I discuss whether this constitutes a 'major transition' in the context of the evolutionary processes more broadly; the role of behaviour in evolution; and the opportunity provided by the rich genetic, phenotypic (fossil morphology) and behavioural (archaeological) record to examine in detail major transitions and the microevolutionary patterns underlying macroevolutionary change.     Blood pressure and long-term mortality in United States hemodialysis patients: USRDS Waves 3 and 4 Study.BackgroundThe long-term prognostic associations of pre- and post-dialysis blood pressures, interdialytic weight gain, and antihypertensive use in hemodialysis patients are unclear.MethodsThe United States Renal Data System (USRDS) Dialysis Morbidity and Mortality Waves 3 and 4 Study, a randomly generated sample of 11,142 subjects receiving hemodialysis on December 31, 1993, was examined, with vital status followed until May 2000.ResultsPre- and post-dialysis blood pressure values, interdialytic weight gain and number of antihypertensives averaged 151.8/79.7, 137.0/74, 3.6% and 0.76, respectively. Prognostic discrimination was maximized by considering pre- and post-systolic and diastolic blood pressure values simultaneously, in a pattern suggesting that wide pulse pressures were associated with mortality (P < 0.0001). Comorbidity adjustment markedly affected associations, with low pre-dialysis diastolic (P < 0.05), low post-dialysis dialysis diastolic pressure (P < 0.05), high post-dialysis dialysis systolic pressure (P < 0.05), and high interdialytic weight gains (P = 0.005) associated with mortality. Each class of antihypertensive drug, except angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE)-inhibitors, was associated with lower mortality in unadjusted models, an effect most pronounced for beta-blockers (hazards ratio 0.72, 95% CI 0.66 to 0.79, P < 0.0001). Comorbidity adjustment eliminated survival associations for each antihypertensive class except beta-blockers.ConclusionsPre- and post-dialysis blood pressure values have independent associations with mortality, in a way that implicates wide pulse pressures. Much of the adverse prognosis of wide pulse pressures probably reflects older age and cardiovascular comorbidity. Large interdialytic weight gains are associated with shorter survival when comorbidity is taken into account. Beta-blocker use shows a robust association with survival, and may be protective

    The influence of leg-to-body ratio, arm-to-body ratio and intra-limb ratio on male human attractiveness.

    Human mate choice is influenced by limb proportions. Previous work has focused on leg-to-body ratio (LBR) as a determinant of male attractiveness and found a preference for limbs that are close to, or slightly above, the average. We investigated the influence of two other key aspects of limb morphology: arm-to-body ratio (ABR) and intra-limb ratio (IR). In three studies of heterosexual women from the USA, we tested the attractiveness of male physiques that varied in LBR, ABR and IR, using figures that ranged from -3 to +3 standard deviations from the population mean. We replicated previous work by finding that the optimally attractive LBR is approximately 0.5 standard deviations above the baseline. We also found a weak effect of IR, with evidence of a weak preference for the baseline proportions. In contrast, there was no effect of ABR on attractiveness, and no interactions between the effects of LBR, ABR and IR. Our results indicate that ABR is not an important determinant of human mate choice for this population, and that IR may exert some influence but that this is much smaller than the effects of LBR. We discuss possible reasons for these results, including the limited variability in upper limb proportions and the potentially weak fitness-signal provided by this aspect of morphology

    Major transitions in human evolution.

    Evolutionary problems are often considered in terms of 'origins', and research in human evolution seen as a search for human origins. However, evolution, including human evolution, is a process of transitions from one state to another, and so questions are best put in terms of understanding the nature of those transitions. This paper discusses how the contributions to the themed issue 'Major transitions in human evolution' throw light on the pattern of change in hominin evolution. Four questions are addressed: (1) Is there a major divide between early (australopithecine) and later (Homo) evolution? (2) Does the pattern of change fit a model of short transformations, or gradual evolution? (3) Why is the role of Africa so prominent? (4) How are different aspects of adaptation-genes, phenotypes and behaviour-integrated across the transitions? The importance of developing technologies and approaches and the enduring role of fieldwork are emphasized.This article is part of the themed issue 'Major transitions in human evolution'

    Martin boundary of a reflected random walk on a half-space

    The complete representation of the Martin compactification for reflected random walks on a half-space Zd×N\Z^d\times\N is obtained. It is shown that the full Martin compactification is in general not homeomorphic to the ``radial'' compactification obtained by Ney and Spitzer for the homogeneous random walks in Zd\Z^d : convergence of a sequence of points znZd1×Nz_n\in\Z^{d-1}\times\N to a point of on the Martin boundary does not imply convergence of the sequence zn/znz_n/|z_n| on the unit sphere SdS^d. Our approach relies on the large deviation properties of the scaled processes and uses Pascal's method combined with the ratio limit theorem.     Kinetic studies of HIV-1 and HIV-2 envelope glycoprotein-mediated fusion

    BACKGROUND: HIV envelope glycoprotein (Env)-mediated fusion is driven by the concerted coalescence of the HIV gp41 N-helical and C-helical regions, which results in the formation of 6 helix bundles. Kinetics of HIV Env-mediated fusion is an important determinant of sensitivity to entry inhibitors and antibodies. However, the parameters that govern the HIV Env fusion cascade have yet to be fully elucidated. We address this issue by comparing the kinetics HIV-1(IIIB )Env with those mediated by HIV-2 from two strains with different affinities for CD4 and CXCR4. RESULTS: HIV-1 and HIV-2 Env-mediated cell fusion occurred with half times of about 60 and 30 min, respectively. Binding experiments of soluble HIV gp120 proteins to CD4 and co-receptor did not correlate with the differences in kinetics of fusion mediated by the three different HIV Envs. However, escape from inhibition by reagents that block gp120-CD4 binding, CD4-induced CXCR4 binding and 6-helix bundle formation, respectively, indicated large difference between HIV-1 and HIV-2 envelope glycoproteins in their CD4-induced rates of engagement with CXCR4. CONCLUSION: The HIV-2 Env proteins studied here exhibited a significantly reduced window of time between the engagement of gp120 with CD4 and exposure of the CXCR4 binding site on gp120 as compared with HIV-1(IIIB )Env. The efficiency with which HIV-2 Env undergoes this CD4-induced conformational change is the major cause of the relatively rapid rate of HIV-2 Env mediated-fusion

    Long-term behavior at foraging sites of adult female loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) from three Florida rookeries

    We used satellite telemetry to study behavior at foraging sites of 40 adult female loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) from three Florida (USA) rookeries. Foraging sites were located in four countries (USA, Mexico, the Bahamas, and Cuba). We were able to determine home range for 32 of the loggerheads. One turtle moved through several temporary residence areas, but the rest had a primary residence area in which they spent all or most of their time (usually >11 months per year). Twenty-four had a primary residence area that was <500 km(2) (mean = 191). Seven had a primary residence area that was ≥500 km(2) (range = 573–1,907). Primary residence areas were mostly restricted to depths <100 m. Loggerheads appeared to favor areas with larger-grained sediment (gravel and rock) over areas with smaller-grained sediment (mud). Short-term departures from primary residence areas were either looping excursions, typically involving 1–2 weeks of continuous travel, or movement to a secondary residence area where turtles spent 25–45 days before returning to their primary residence area. Ten turtles had a secondary residence area, and six used it as an overwintering site. For those six turtles, the primary residence area was in shallow water (<17 m) in the northern half of the Gulf of Mexico (GOM), and overwintering sites were farther offshore or farther south. We documented long winter dive times (>4 h) for the first time in the GOM. Characterizing behaviors at foraging sites helps inform and assess loggerhead recovery efforts

    Spectroscopic Discovery of the Broad-Lined Type Ic Supernova 2010bh Associated with the Low-Redshift GRB 100316D

    We present the spectroscopic discovery of a broad-lined Type Ic supernova (SN 2010bh) associated with the nearby long-duration gamma-ray burst (GRB) 100316D. At z = 0.0593, this is the third-nearest GRB-SN. Nightly optical spectra obtained with the Magellan telescopes during the first week after explosion reveal the gradual emergence of very broad spectral features superposed on a blue continuum. The supernova features are typical of broad-lined SNe Ic and are generally consistent with previous supernovae associated with low-redshift GRBs. However, the inferred velocities of SN 2010bh at 21 days after explosion are a factor of ~2 times larger than those of the prototypical SN 1998bw at similar epochs, with v ~ 26,000 km/s, indicating a larger explosion energy or a different ejecta structure. A near-infrared spectrum taken 13.8 days after explosion shows no strong evidence for He I at 1.083 microns, implying that the progenitor was largely stripped of its helium envelope. The host galaxy is of low luminosity (M_R ~ -18.5 mag) and low metallicity (Z < 0.4 Z_solar), similar to the hosts of other low-redshift GRB-SNe.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, 1 table, submitted to ApJ Letter

    High-Velocity Line Forming Regions in the Type Ia Supernova 2009ig

    We report measurements and analysis of high-velocity (> 20,000 km/s) and photospheric absorption features in a series of spectra of the Type Ia supernova (SN) 2009ig obtained between -14d and +13d with respect to the time of maximum B-band luminosity. We identify lines of Si II, Si III, S II, Ca II and Fe II that produce both high-velocity (HVF) and photospheric-velocity (PVF) absorption features. SN 2009ig is unusual for the large number of lines with detectable HVF in the spectra, but the light-curve parameters correspond to a slightly overluminous but unexceptional SN Ia (M_B = -19.46 mag and Delta_m15 (B) = 0.90 mag). Similarly, the Si II lambda_6355 velocity at the time of B-max is greater than "normal" for a SN Ia, but it is not extreme (v_Si = 13,400 km/s). The -14d and -13d spectra clearly resolve HVF from Si II lambda_6355 as separate absorptions from a detached line forming region. At these very early phases, detached HVF are prevalent in all lines. From -12d to -6d, HVF and PVF are detected simultaneously, and the two line forming regions maintain a constant separation of about 8,000 km/s. After -6d all absorption features are PVF. The observations of SN 2009ig provide a complete picture of the transition from HVF to PVF. Most SN Ia show evidence for HVF from multiple lines in spectra obtained before -10d, and we compare the spectra of SN 2009ig to observations of other SN. We show that each of the unusual line profiles for Si II lambda_6355 found in early-time spectra of SN Ia correlate to a specific phase in a common development sequence from HVF to PVF.Comment: 19 pages, 11figures, 4 tables, submitted to Ap
