    Co-Constructing Identity During Stressful Processes: How Identity is Co-Constructed During Tenure

    This study uses narrative inquiry and semi-structured interviews to discuss the nature of tenure’s influence on identity. The location used for this project was a private institution in the pacific northwest of the United States and follows six professor’s experience gaining tenure, the barriers and boundaries they faced, and how that shaped their identities and relationships. The body of theory that grounds this paper comes from critical/postmodern-paradigm Organizational Communication Theory and Identity Negotiation Theory. This study expands the knowledge of boundary work, uses Identity Negotiation Theory in organizational contexts, and co-construction of identity. The findings indicate that there are three main platforms tenure takes place in: teaching, research, and service. All of these aspects have boundaries co-created by other stakeholders in the university that create a trend of concertive control over the expected behavior and identities of the candidates. The professors explain their agency and adaptation to both fit in and push the mold on the expected performance of tenure, and how it achieving it was a stressful, but authentic process

    The Danish royal flagship gribshunden : Dendrochronology on a late medieval carvel sunk in the Baltic Sea

    The Royal flagship Gribshunden carried the Danish King Hans on its way to the city of Kalmar in Sweden when the ship sank in the summer of 1495. The ship caught fire while anchored north of the Stora Ek o Island and sank to the seafloor, where it lies to this day. The wreck was rediscovered in the 1970s and is remarkably well preserved.Since 2001, scientific investigations have been performed on the wreck by various organizations. In total, 13 dendrochronological samples from different parts of the ship construction have been collected and analyzed with standard dendrochronological methods with respect to age and provenance. The results show that all dated samples could have been felled during the winter season of 1482/83, although only one sample contains sapwood and waney edge. The highest correlations are obtained from reference chronologies that originate from the River Meuse drainage area, with correlations peaking around the city of Namur in Belgium. Most likely, theship was constructed in a shipyard close to the mouth of the River Meuse in the southern Netherlands. It seems King Hans realized the potential of the new ship type represented by Gribshunden, but his shipwrights did not have the knowledge to build such a ship in Denmark. Instead, he purchased the ship from abroad. This studyhighlights late medieval economic and political connections throughout northern Europe

    Purse of medieval silver coins from royal shipwreck revealed by X-ray microscale Computed Tomography (µCT) scanning

    We present the archaeological discovery and microscale X-ray Computed Tomography (µCT) scanning of a silver coin purse lost in a medieval shipwreck while the king who issued many of the coins was aboard. The find demonstrates that shipwrecks are extraordinary repositories of historical information, in this case providing insight into one of the most important and dramatic events of medieval Scandinavia. In the summer of 1495, Gribshunden, the flagship of King Hans, ruler of Denmark and Norway, burned and sank in the Baltic Sea en route to a political summit in Sweden. The identified coins in this purse impart direct evidence of Hans’ establishment of new mints to increase the amount of currency in circulation, and his decision not to recall and debase existing coins. These were essential elements of Hans’ comprehensive strategy for consolidating a Nordic political union and constructing a new nation. The recovered coins are too fragile for mechanical separation, but µCT allowed full or partial identification of 82% of the coins in the concreted purse. Our investigations suggest the purse likely was the personal possession of a high-ranking and trusted person in the king’s entourage. Further, the composition of the purse illuminates politics and monetary policy in medieval northern Europe

    Excited states in lattice QCD with the stochastic LapH method

    Progress in computing the spectrum of excited baryons and mesons in lattice QCD is described. Results in the zero-momentum bosonic I=1/2, S=1, T1u symmetry sector of QCD using a correlation matrix of 58 operators are presented. All needed Wick contractions are efficiently evaluated using a stochastic method of treating the low-lying modes of quark propagation that exploits Laplacian Heaviside quark-field smearing.     Dementia diagnosis and referral in general practice: a representative survey of Irish general practitioners

    Aims: Most of those with a memory problem or concern over cognition present to their General Practitioner (GP) in the first instance. Despite this, the current diagnostic and referral patterns of Irish GPs remains unclear. Methods: A survey was distributed to three separate cohorts of GPs (n=692) Results: Ninety-Five (14%) responded. Most personally diagnose 1-3 (69%; 65/95) or 4-6 (21%; 20/95) patients with dementia per year. Two-thirds (62%; 59/95) refer >80% of those with possible dementia for further assessment/support, most commonly to support/clarify a diagnosis (71%; 67/95) and most frequently to a geriatrician (79%; 75/95). In half of cases (51%; 48/95), referral is to a professional working as part of an established memory clinic. One-fifth reported receiving dementia-specific postgraduate training (19%; 18/95) and over four-fifths (82%; 78/95) would welcome further training. Discussion: Further attention to the ongoing establishment of memory clinic services and dedicated referral pathways, as well as increasing emphasis on dementia assessment and diagnosis in medical curricula, is warranted

    Policy options for the world’s primary forests in multilateral environmental agreements

    We identify policies that would provide a solid foundation in key international negotiations to ensure that primary forests persist into the 21st Century. A novel compilation of primary forest cover and other data revealed that protection of primary forests is a matter of global concern being equally distributed between developed and developing countries. Almost all (98%) of primary forest is found within 25 countries with around half in five developed ones (USA, Canada, Russia, Australia, and NZ). Only approximate to 22% of primary forest is found in IUCN Protected Areas Categories I-VI, which is approximately 5% of preagriculture natural forest cover. Rates of deforestation and forest degradation are rapid and extensive, and the long-term integrity of primary forest cannot be assumed. We recommend four new actions that could be included in climate change, biodiversity, and sustainable development negotiations: (1) recognize primary forests as a matter of global concern within international negotiations; (2) incorporate primary forests into environmental accounting; (3) prioritize the principle of avoided loss; and (4) universally accept the important role of indigenous and community conserved areas. In the absence of specific policies for primary forest protection, their unique biodiversity values and ecosystem services will continue to erode

    High bandwidth freestanding semipolar (11–22) InGaN/GaN light-emitting diodes

    Freestanding semipolar (11–22) indium gallium nitride (InGaN) multiplequantum-well light-emitting diodes (LEDs) emitting at 445 nm have been realized by the use of laser lift-off (LLO) of the LEDs from a 50- m-thick GaN layer grown on a patterned (10–12) r -plane sapphire substrate (PSS). The GaN grooves originating from the growth on PSS were removed by chemical mechanical polishing. The 300 m × 300 m LEDs showed a turn-on voltage of 3.6 V and an output power through the smooth substrate of 0.87 mW at 20 mA. The electroluminescence spectrum of LEDs before and after LLO showed a stronger emission intensity along the [11–23]InGaN/GaN direction. The polarization anisotropy is independent of the GaN grooves, with a measured value of 0.14. The bandwidth of the LEDs is in excess of 150 MHz at 20 mA, and back-to-back transmission of 300 Mbps is demonstrated, making these devices suitable for visible light communication (VLC) applications
