Putting Teeth into A.B. 109: Why California’s Historic Public Safety Realignment Act Should Require Reentry Programming

    Get PDF
Part I of this Comment provides a history of probation reform policies in California and an overview of realignment and its preceding litigation, with a focus on components that relate to rehabilitation in post-release. Part II explores how Plata laid the groundwork for California’s current focus on reform and demonstrates how realignment hinges on changing the role of probation, slowing recidivism, and improving rehabilitation opportunities. Part III argues that the State should provide mandatory guidelines for county rehabilitation efforts as part of realignment. Finally, Part IV recommends statutory language that would make rehabilitative programming for probationers a mandatory component of the regulations moving forward

Citation Analysis of Mathematics and Statistics Dissertations and Theses from the University at Albany

    Get PDF
This study analyzed dissertations and theses completed from 2009-2019 in the Mathematics and Statistics department at the University at Albany to investigate resource type, citation age, publishers, and journal title dispersion. Students cited journal articles 57.0% of the time, while books and book chapters combined accounted for 30.5% of the citations. Publisher usage fit the Pareto Distribution; however, there was a high journal title dispersion. Preprints represented 4.6% of the citations, an increase from previous studies. The amount of graduate student citation quality issues and preprint citations shows a need for instruction and discussions in these areas

The Effects of Adding Values to an Acceptance Intervention on Willingness to Engage in a Difficult Task

There is a relatively large body of evidence supporting acceptance as a treatment component. According to Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) proponents, acceptance is done in the service of values (Hayes et al., 2011). This study aimed to examine the effects of adding a values component to an acceptance intervention on persistence in a frustrating task. Participants were randomly assigned to one of three conditions: acceptance, acceptance plus values, and suppression. Following a mood induction, participants listened to a recording of their assigned coping strategy and were then asked to use this strategy during a frustrating computer task. No group differences were found on willingness to engage in the difficult task, which does not support the ACT proponents\u27 assertion. There are a number of methodological limitations in this study related to the mood induction placement, interventions, persistence task, and sample that may have contributed to the null findings. Continued research in this area is needed to determine the impact of values as a treatment component, which has important clinical implications

    A Research Data Services FAIRytale

Whether for assignments or research, the faculty, staff, and students at all academic institutions will work with data. Some patrons seek assistance finding open data for their projects, while others would like lessons in data analysis or visualization. Data sharing is increasingly required by journals or funding agencies, and researchers may find this challenging while also navigating Data Use Agreements, confidentiality concerns, data documentation, locating a suitable repository, and more. Furthermore, most funding agencies require a data management plan be included in grant proposals to ensure that researchers are prepared to follow best practices regarding the collection, storage, security, and sharing of their data. Therefore, data literacy education and research data services are essential. Unfortunately, research data services are frequently decentralized at academic institutions, with services being offered by many departments who don’t always collaborate on outreach. Research reproducibility and ethics, as embodied in the FAIR principles for data sharing, align with libraries’ values, making them a natural home for data support and services. In the last several years, our Libraries have made progress with outreach to campus departments involved in aspects of data literacy and management, resulting in a coordinated Data Services group with representatives from those departments led by librarians. In this session, we will discuss the role of Data Services as a larger part of the institution’s Research Data Management agenda, highlight some of our accomplishments, admit some of our challenges, and share some of our near-term next steps and big picture goals
