    Seasonality in house prices

    Get PDF
The contribution of this paper is to offer a rationale for the observed seasonal pattern in house prices. We first document seasonality in house prices for the US and the UK using formal statistical tests and illustrate its quantitative importance. In the second part of the paper we employ a standard model of dynamic optimisation with housing demand and seasonal shocks in non-durables in order to characterise seasonality in house prices as an equilibrium outcome. We provide empirical evidence for seasonality in house prices with our small model using US and UK data. --house prices, seasonality, optimal housing consumption

    Exceptional planar polynomials

Planar functions are special functions from a finite field to itself that give rise to finite projective planes and other combinatorial objects. We consider polynomials over a finite field KK that induce planar functions on infinitely many extensions of KK; we call such polynomials exceptional planar. Exceptional planar monomials have been recently classified. In this paper we establish a partial classification of exceptional planar polynomials. This includes results for the classical planar functions on finite fields of odd characteristic and for the recently proposed planar functions on finite fields of characteristic two

Surface energy and boundary layers for a chain of atoms at low temperature

We analyze the surface energy and boundary layers for a chain of atoms at low temperature for an interaction potential of Lennard-Jones type. The pressure (stress) is assumed small but positive and bounded away from zero, while the temperature β−1\beta^{-1} goes to zero. Our main results are: (1) As β→∞\beta \to \infty at fixed positive pressure p>0p>0, the Gibbs measures μβ\mu_\beta and νβ\nu_\beta for infinite chains and semi-infinite chains satisfy path large deviations principles. The rate functions are bulk and surface energy functionals E‾bulk\overline{\mathcal{E}}_{\mathrm{bulk}} and E‾surf\overline{\mathcal{E}}_\mathrm{surf}. The minimizer of the surface functional corresponds to zero temperature boundary layers. (2) The surface correction to the Gibbs free energy converges to the zero temperature surface energy, characterized with the help of the minimum of E‾surf\overline{\mathcal{E}}_\mathrm{surf}. (3) The bulk Gibbs measure and Gibbs free energy can be approximated by their Gaussian counterparts. (4) Bounds on the decay of correlations are provided, some of them uniform in β\beta

Efficient sympathetic motional ground-state cooling of a molecular ion

Cold molecular ions are promising candidates in various fields ranging from precision spectroscopy and test of fundamental physics to ultra-cold chemistry. Control of internal and external degrees of freedom is a prerequisite for many of these applications. Motional ground state cooling represents the starting point for quantum logic-assisted internal state preparation, detection, and spectroscopy protocols. Robust and fast cooling is crucial to maximize the fraction of time available for the actual experiment. We optimize the cooling rate of ground state cooling schemes for single 25Mg+^{25}\mathrm{Mg}^{+} ions and sympathetic ground state cooling of 24MgH+^{24}\mathrm{MgH}^{+}. In particular, we show that robust cooling is achieved by combining pulsed Raman sideband cooling with continuous quench cooling. Furthermore, we experimentally demonstrate an efficient strategy for ground state cooling outside the Lamb-Dicke regime.Comment: 11 pages, 11 figure
