Magnetic, electronic and vibrational properties of metal and fluorinated metal phthalocyanines
The magnetic and electronic properties of metal phthalocyanines (MPc) and
fluorinated metal phthalocyanines (FMPc) are studied by means of spin
density functional theory (SDFT). Several metals (M) such as Ca, all first
d-row transition metals and Ag are investigated. By considering different open
shell transition metals it is possible to tune the electronic properties of
MPc, in particular the electronic molecular gap and total magnetic moment.
Besides assigning the structural and electronic properties of MPc and
FMPc, the vibrational modes analysis of the ScPc\textendash ZnPc series
have been studied and correlated to experimental measurements when available.Comment: 28 pages (preprint style), several figure
GIRAFFE multiple integral field units at VLT: a unique tool to recover velocity fields of distant galaxies
The GIRAFFE spectrograph is unique in providing the integral field
spectroscopy of fifteen distant galaxies at the same time. It has been
successfully implemented at the second VLT unit within the FLAMES facility. We
present GIRAFFE observations acquired during the Guaranteed Time Observation of
the Paris Observatory, using total exposure times ranging from 6 to 12 hours.
The reduced 3D cube of each galaxy has been deconvolved using our new package
DisGal3D. This software has been written using the only assumption that UV
light traces the emission line regions. The comparison between GIRAFFE spectra
and HST imagery allows us to recover details on velocity fields as small as
0.3-0.4 arcsec. It has been successfully tested using Fabry Perot observations
of nearby galaxies purposely redshifted to large distances. We present here
preliminary results for three distant galaxies at 0.45< z < 0.65, whose
velocity fields have been derived with exquisite spectral (R=10000) and spatial
resolutions. Observed velocity fields range from disturbed fields expected in
major merger events to those of regular spiral with minor perturbations. For
the latter, one could accurately derive the dynamical major axis and the
maximal rotational velocity. We conclude that dynamical properties of a large
number of distant galaxies can be routinely derived at VLT. This opens a new
avenue towards the understanding of the galaxy formation and evolution during

Patrones de diversidad alfa, beta y gama de la herpetofauna de las tierras bajas y valles adyacentes del Pacífico de México
The latitudinal distribution patterns of alpha, beta and gamma diversity of reptiles, amphibians and herpetofauna were analyzed using individual binary models of potential distribution for 301 species predicted by ecological modelling for a grid of 9,932 quadrants of ~25 km2 each. We arranged quadrants in 312 latitudinal bands in which alpha, beta and gamma values were determined. Latitudinal trends of all scales of diversity were similar in all groups. Alpha and gamma responded inversely to latitude whereas beta showed a high latitudinal fluctuation due to the high number of endemic species. Alpha and gamma showed a strong correlation in all groups. Beta diversity is an important component of the herpetofauna distribution patterns as a continuous source of species diversity throughout the region.

Se organizaron los cuadrantes en 312 bandas latitudinales para las cuales se determinaron los valores de alfa, beta y gama. Las tendencias latitudinales de todas las escalas de diversidad eran similares en todos los grupos. Alfa y gama respondieron inversamente a la latitud mientras que beta registró una gran fluctuación latitudinal debida al alto número de especies endémicas. Alfa y gama mostraron una fuerte correlación en todos los grupos. La diversidad beta es un componente importante de los patrones de distribución de la herpetofauna como una fuente constante de diversidad de especies a lo largo de la región.

Doorway States and Billiards
Whenever a distinct state is immersed in a sea of complicated and dense
states, the strength of the distinct state, which we refer to as a doorway, is
distributed in their neighboring states. We analyze this mechanism for 2-D
billiards with different geometries. One of them is symmetric and integrable,
another is symmetric but chaotic, and the third has a capricious form. The fact
that the doorway-state mechanism is valid for such highly diverse cases, proves

A recent rebuilding of most spirals ?
Re-examination of the properties of distant galaxies leads to the evidence
that most present-day spirals have built up half of their stellar masses during
the last 8 Gyr, mostly during several intense phases of star formation during
which they took the appearance of luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs). Distant
galaxy morphologies encompass all of the expected stages of galaxy merging,
central core formation and disk growth, while their cores are much bluer than
those of present-day bulges. We have tested a spiral rebuilding scenario, for
which 75+/-25% of spirals have experienced their last major merger event less
than 8 Gyr ago. It accounts for the simultaneous decreases, during that period,
of the cosmic star formation density, of the merger rate, of the number
densities of LIRGs and of compact galaxies, while the densities of ellipticals

1/f noise in the Two-Body Random Ensemble
We show that the spectral fluctuations of the Two-Body Random Ensemble (TBRE)
exhibit 1/f noise. This result supports a recent conjecture stating that
chaotic quantum systems are characterized by 1/f noise in their energy level
fluctuations. After suitable individual averaging, we also study the
distribution of the exponent \alpha in the 1/f^{\alpha} noise for the
individual members of the ensemble. Almost all the exponents lie inside a
narrow interval around \alpha=1 suggesting that also individual members exhibit

Surface modification of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) by corona discharge plasma
Surface modification of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) was studied by corona discharge plasma at different exposure times using air as working gas. The modification of the surface properties are characterized, those are morphology and wettability. Corona plasma treatment was found to modify the PET surface in both morphology and wettability. The corona discharge at atmospheric pressure is a heterogeneous with multiple current pulses, which generates an asymmetric pattern of erosion on the PET surface. The corona discharge treatment erodes the surface and therefore modifies the surface morphology. The roughness of the PET surface increases in the impact point of the corona discharge on the PET surface. An increase in the wettability of PET was also observed after corona discharge treatment at atmospheric pressure
Deep Galaxy survey at 6.75 micron with the ISO satellite
Deep 6.75um mid-IR ISOCAM observations were obtained of the Canada-France
Redshift Survey (CFRS) 1415+52 field with the Infrared Space Observatory. The
identification of the sources with optical counterparts is described in detail,
and a classification scheme is devised which depends on the S/N of the
detection and the inverse probability of chance coincidence. 83% of the 54
ISOCAM sources are identified with Iab<23.5 counterparts. The (I-K)ab colors,
radio properties, spectrophotometric properties and frequency of nuclear
activity of these counterparts differ on average from those of typical CFRS
galaxies. CFRS spectra are available for 21 of the sources which have Iab <=
22.5 (including 7 stars). Most of the strongest sources are stars or AGN. Among
the non--stellar counterparts with spectra, 40% are AGNs, and 53% are galaxies
that display star formation activity and/or significant contributions of A
stars. The ISOCAM sources also display an IR excess, even when compared with
heavily-reddened local starburst galaxies. An upper limit of 30% of
extragalactic ISO sources could be at z>1 of the 44 S6.75um > 150uJy sources
which are non-stellar (7 "spectroscopic" and 3 "photometric" stars excluded)Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures. Accepted for publication in A
