Effect of symmetry distortions on photoelectron selection rules and spectra of Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+ delta}
We derive photoelectron selection rules along the glide plane in orthorhombic
Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+\delta} (Bi2212). These selection rules explain the reversed
intensity behavior of the shadow and the main band of the material as a natural
consequence of the variating representation of the final state as a function of
k_\parallel. Our one-step simulations strongly support the structural origin of
the shadow band but we also introduce a scenario for detecting

The NASA/MSFC global reference atmospheric model: MOD 3 (with spherical harmonic wind model)
Improvements to the global reference atmospheric model are described. The basic model includes monthly mean values of pressure, density, temperature, and geostrophic winds, as well as quasi-biennial and small and large scale random perturbations. A spherical harmonic wind model for the 25 to 90 km height range is included. Below 25 km and above 90 km, the GRAM program uses the geostrophic wind equations and pressure data to compute the mean wind. In the altitudes where the geostrophic wind relations are used, an interpolation scheme is employed for estimating winds at low latitudes where the geostrophic wind relations being to mesh down. Several sample wind profiles are given, as computed by the spherical harmonic model. User and programmer manuals are presented

Sepsis-induced myocardial dysfunction is associated with poor outcomes, but traditional measurements of systolic function such as left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) do not directly correlate with prognosis. Global longitudinal strain (GLS) utilizing speckle-tracking echocardiography (STE) could be a better marker of intrinsic left ventricular (LV) function, reflecting myocardial deformation rather than displacement and volume changes. Crosstalk between long non coding RNAs, microRNAs and DNA damage repair in prostate cancer: new therapeutic opportunities?
It is increasingly appreciated that transcripts derived from non-coding parts of the human genome, such as long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) and microRNAs (miRNAs), are key regulators of biological processes both in normal physiology and disease. Their dysregulation during tumourigenesis has attracted significant interest in their exploitation as novel cancer therapeutics. Prostate cancer (PCa), as one of the most diagnosed malignancies and a leading cause of cancer-related death in men, continues to pose a major public health problem. In particular, survival of men with metastatic disease is very poor. Defects in DNA damage response (DDR) pathways culminate in genomic instability in PCa, which is associated with aggressive disease and poor patient outcome. Treatment options for metastatic PCa remain limited. Thus, researchers are increasingly targeting ncRNAs and DDR pathways to develop new biomarkers and therapeutics for PCa. Increasing evidence points to a widespread and biologically-relevant regulatory network of interactions between lncRNAs and miRNAs, with implications for major biological and pathological processes. This review summarises the current state of knowledge surrounding the roles of the lncRNA:miRNA interactions in PCa DDR, and their emerging potential as predictive and diagnostic biomarkers. Enhanced tracer transport by the spiral defect chaos state of a convecting fluid
To understand how spatiotemporal chaos may modify material transport, we use
direct numerical simulations of the three-dimensional Boussinesq equations and
of an advection-diffusion equation to study the transport of a passive tracer
by the spiral defect chaos state of a convecting fluid. The simulations show
that the transport is diffusive and is enhanced by the spatiotemporal chaos.
The enhancement in tracer diffusivity follows two regimes. For large Peclet
numbers (that is, small molecular diffusivities of the tracer), we find that
the enhancement is proportional to the Peclet number. For small Peclet numbers,
the enhancement is proportional to the square root of the Peclet number. We
explain the presence of these two regimes in terms of how the local transport
depends on the local wave numbers of the convection rolls. For large Peclet
numbers, we further find that defects cause the tracer diffusivity to be
enhanced locally in the direction orthogonal to the local wave vector but
suppressed in the direction of the local wave vector.Comment: 11 pages, 12 figure
