Hypnosis, Indifferentiation, and Therapeutic Change
Hypnosis is nothing if not confounding. Experts strongly disagree about what it is (an altered state? focused relaxation? a set of procedures?); researchers and clinicians differ dramatically in how they induce it; and whereas clinicians are able to employ it to hasten clients’ physical healing and bring them significant relief from pain, depression, and anxiety, stage hypnotists are equally adept at exploiting both it and their audience for the sake of cheap and easy laughs. Not surprising, then, that even the word itself is misleading. Coined by James Braid in the 1840s, hypnosis comes from the Greek hupnos, sleep, but brainwave research confirms that people experiencing the phenomenon are decidedly not dozing. Add to this the assumption of many family therapists that a tool for working intra-personally is likely to have limited relevance for professionals who more commonly attend to what’s going on inter-personally, and you’d be justified in wondering how the editors of this magazine got the idea to devote a whole issue to the topic
Finding True North How to Help Clients Find A Fulfilling Career Path: Case Commentary
Excerpt
Although Karen James Chopra considers herself a career counselor, I think it would be equally appropriate to consider her a creativity instigator. After all, she helps her clients get beyond the analytic reasoning of their rational minds, accessing the wisdom of their emotions and recognizing the importance of listening to their desires. I appreciated her exhaustive search for meaningful themes in the career choices of her clients and their families, her brainstorming exercises, and her commitment to creating a safe setting for inchoate, sometimes identity-challenging, ideas to emerge and take hold. I can imagine that a client like Ron would feel elated at being helped to discover a new, more fitting career
Zucchini Mush as a Misguided Way of Knowing
In order to perceive the world, we must necessarily draw distinctions. As Dell and Goolishian (1981) have said, without carving the world into pieces by naming some of its \u27parts\u27 we can see nothing (p. 178). According to Gregory Bateson, there may be better and worse ways of doing this splitting of the universe into nameable parts (Bateson, 1977, p. 244). Science is one such way of perceiving: As a method of perception—and that is all science can claim to be—science, like all other methods of perception, is limited in its ability to collect the outward and visible signs of whatever may be truth. (Bateson, 1979, p. 32)
