    Howling (and Bleeding) at the Moon: Menstruation, Monstrosity and the Double in the \u3ci\u3eGinger Snaps\u3c/i\u3e Werewolf Trilogy

    In this essay, I explore the radical reframing of the traditional werewolf narrative with respect to the figure of the double and the abject female body in the Ginger Snaps werewolf trilogy. Notable theorists discussed herein include Barbara Creed, Carol Clover, Julia Kristeva, April Miller and Robin Wood. Throughout both its folkloric and cinematic history, the creature of the werewolf has been constructed almost invariably as a male monster suffering within a Jekyll and Hyde-like narrative of the double. An otherwise exemplary member of Robin Wood’s society of surplus repression, the male lycanthrope is doomed to endure a monthly transformation into monstrous, murderous beast, the Other that challenges normality through its very existence. The agony of the male werewolf, therefore, is generally believed to exist only with regard to the regret he feels for the previous night’s violent excesses. However, it is actually the male lycanthrope’s bodily alignment with the female Other that causes his distress. Forced to confront an abject body tied to a monthly lunar cycle, the male werewolf is feminized. Not only does the sufferer’s body not respect the boundary between human and animal, but the tentative boundary between male and female is also violated, and it is this transgression that accounts for the true agony of the classic male werewolf. The Ginger Snaps werewolf cycle challenges this narrative by situating lycanthropy within the lives of female teenagers Ginger and Brigitte Fitzgerald. Following the subgenre’s typical trajectory, Ginger is bitten by a werewolf, thus becoming a werewolf herself, and her younger sister, Brigitte, attempts to save her. However, by transmuting the werewolf narrative from the male to the female, the implications of the doppelganger narrative must change. By virtue of her abject female body, Ginger is already marginalized and constructed as Other in the suburban world in which she lives. There is no monstrous double for Ginger, for as a menstruating female she has always been this monster. As a result, Ginger eventually embraces her lycanthropy and in doing so also embraces her identity as a woman. She becomes the “goddamn force of nature” of her teenage dreams, and unlike the male werewolf, whose monstrosity is a nightmarish shadow of his own normality, Ginger’s monstrosity is her own reflection, an unwavering look at a fantastic self otherwise unattainable to her in the world she lives. Yet Ginger Snaps is still a doppelganger narrative. It is Brigitte who suffers under the agony of Ginger’s transformation, for in losing Ginger, Brigitte loses her identity as well. Brigitte longs for the reconciliation of her and her sister, but as the two have become two distinct persons in Ginger’s monstrosity, this is impossible. Coded as Carol Clover’s Final Girl figure, Brigitte destroys her sister, thereby coming to stand for the symbolic order she resists so enthusiastically at the start of the film. However, despite their radically different engagements with monstrosity, both Ginger and Brigitte are punished. It appears that as subversive as the Ginger Snaps films are in respect to the werewolf narrative, they also reflect a deep cultural ambivalence about female identity. It is only together that the girls can triumph, making the Ginger Snaps cycle a powerful statement on the power of relationality between females in the construction and maintenance of self

    Wordsworthian Prospect Revolution and the Disciples of Secular Romanticism/Some of My Own

    The legacy of William Wordsworth’s authorial influence is often minimized when examined in the writing of his second generation contemporaries (Percy Shelley and John Keats). While scholars frequently demonstrate these poets’ shared transcendence of the subject/object paradox, they ultimately fail to credit Wordsworth with the revolutionary moral applicability of secular Romanticism. Instead, academic criticism generally overemphasizes the confounding impact of Wordsworth’s post-Ballads fundamentalism, thereby overlooking the enduring impetus of the young Romantics’ initial call to discipleship in Lyrical Ballads. When closely examining the authors’ poetry and prose, their extensive combination of unique personal experience and inner passion as a means of depicting objective reality can be directly attributed to Wordsworth\u27s observations concerning the universal Truth of reflective and individualized prospects. Thus, the poetic ideals of these young Romantics are based significantly on Wordsworth’s rather revolutionary understanding of prospect poetry, particularly as described in the new travel narrative of Lyrical Ballads. Moreover, Wordsworth\u27s unique perspective serves as the fundamental basis of Shelley and Keats\u27 poetic depictions, rather than a simple source of their inspiration. Through the development of Wordsworth’s secular poetic doctrines, and the second generation discipleship of Shelley and Keats, the metaphysical relationship between object and subject is forever psycho-functionally expanded by the sublime possibilities of morally reformative poetic influence. The subjective-objectivity of Wordsworth’s prospect poetry thereby comes to characterize an important niche in British Romanticism, creating a period-wide legacy for which he will never be forgotten. “Some of My Own” serves as modern verse tribute to Wordsworth’s ameliorative legacy

    Informal Caregivers’ Experience During Acute Exacerbation of COPD in Older Adults: A Dissertation

    Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) has been recognized as a leading cause of mortality in older adults involving acute exacerbations as life-threatening events that lead to frequent hospitalization for care. Informal caregivers have been essential to helping older adults with COPD during an acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD). A lack of empirical knowledge exists regarding the experience of informal caregivers of older adults with AECOPD in situation awareness for recognizing, understanding, and responding to an AECOPD in an emergent situation. This qualitative descriptive study explored situation awareness and its components of perception, comprehension and projection of next steps, including the caregiver’s confidence level during the AECOPD event. Fifteen informal caregivers, ages 31-77 years (mean age 48), who provided care for older adults with COPD were interviewed from an underserved community health center. The overarching theme derived from this study was something was wrong and something needed to be done. Subthemes emerged as a heightened sense of awareness, caregiver tipping point, planning next steps, caregiver confidence, and caregiver commitment. This study utilized situation awareness theory as a relevant guiding framework in exploring the experience of lay informal caregivers caring for older adults with AECOPD events. Study findings provided a description of the complex processes involved, including confidence level, for informal caregiver’s in situation awareness to recognize and respond to an AECOPD event in the older adult. Future targeted interventions need to address strategies to enhance individualized care for older adults with AECOPD events for managing care at home

    Debris Disks in the Scorpius-Centaurus OB Association Resolved by ALMA

    We present a CO(2-1) and 1240 um continuum survey of 23 debris disks with spectral types B9-G1, observed at an angular resolution of 0.5-1 arcsec with the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA). The sample was selected for large infrared excess and age ~10 Myr, to characterize the prevalence of molecular gas emission in young debris disks. We identify three CO-rich debris disks, plus two additional tentative (3-sigma) CO detections. Twenty disks were detected in the continuum at the >3-sigma level. For the 12 disks in the sample that are spatially resolved by our observations, we perform an independent analysis of the interferometric continuum visibilities to constrain the basic dust disk geometry, as well as a simultaneous analysis of the visibilities and broad-band spectral energy distribution to constrain the characteristic grain size and disk mass. The gas-rich debris disks exhibit preferentially larger outer radii in their dust disks, and a higher prevalence of characteristic grain sizes smaller than the blowout size. The gas-rich disks do not exhibit preferentially larger dust masses, contrary to expectations for a scenario in which a higher cometary destruction rate would be expected to result in a larger mass of both CO and dust. The three debris disks in our sample with strong CO detections are all around A stars: the conditions in disks around intermediate-mass stars appear to be the most conducive to the survival or formation of CO.Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in Ap

    Comparative Surface Heat Transfer Measurements in Hypervelocity Flow

    Reliable prediction of the high heat transfer rates experienced during the hypersonic portion of planetary entry and descent is critical to vehicle survival. Two types of sensors that can be used to measure surface heat flux are coaxial thermocouple gages and thin film resistance thermometers. Individually, both types of gages have been used successfully in a number of studies [1–19]. Both thermocouple and thin film gages measure surface temperature from which heat transfer can be calculated. Both have µs response times, and can be flush-mounted in models. Coaxial thermocouples are robust, can survive challenging experimental conditions, and are typically used in higher enthalpy flows. Thin film resistance gages typically provide improved signal levels, but are less robust, have to be individually calibrated, and are typically used in lower enthalpy flows. As a result, there are few studies which directly compare measurements from the two types of gages. In the present work, we perform experimental measurements at a range of intermediate enthalpies in hypervelocity flow and make direct comparisons between temperature histories and heat flux data obtained from thermocouple and thin film gages
