A Quantum Hall Fluid of Vortices
In this note we demonstrate that vortices in a non-relativistic Chern-Simons
theory form a quantum Hall fluid. We show that the vortex dynamics is
controlled by the matrix mechanics previously proposed by Polychronakos as a
description of the quantum Hall droplet. As the number of vortices becomes
large, they fill the plane and a hydrodynamic treatment becomes possible,
resulting in the non-commutative theory of Susskind. Key to the story is the

Monte Carlo simulation of subsurface ordering kinetics in an fcc-alloy model
Within the atom-vacancy exchange mechanism in a nearest-neighbor interaction
model we investigate the kinetics of surface-induced ordering processes close
to the (001) surface of an fcc A_3B-alloy. After a sudden quench into the
ordered phase with a final temperature above the ordering spinodal, T_f > T_sp,
the early time kinetics is dominated by a segregation front which propagates
into the bulk with nearly constant velocity. Below the spinodal, T_f < T_sp,
motion of the segregation wave reflects a coarsening process which appears to
be slower than predicted by the Lifschitz-Allen-Cahn law. In addition, in the
front-penetrated region lateral growth differs distinctly from perpendicular
growth, as a result of the special structure of antiphase boundaries near the
surface. Our results are compared with recent experiments on the subsurface

Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy on Single Crystal MgB2
We report on the results of scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements on
single crystals of Mg2. Tunneling was performed both parallel and perpendicular
to the crystalline c-axis. In the first case, a single superconducting gap
(Delta_pi = 2.2 meV) associated with the pi-band is observed. Tunneling
parallel to the ab-plane reveals an additional, larger gap (Delta_sigma ~ 7
meV) originating in the highly two-dimensional sigma-band. Vortex imaging in
the pi-band was performed with the field and tunnel current parallel to the
c-axis. The vortices have a large core size compared to estimates based on Hc2,
and show an absence of localized states in the core. Furthermore,
superconductivity between the vortices is rapidly suppressed by an applied

Measuring the elements of the optical density matrix
Most methods for experimentally reconstructing the quantum state of light
involve determining a quasiprobability distribution such as the Wigner
function. In this paper we present a scheme for measuring individual density
matrix elements in the photon number state representation. Remarkably, the
scheme is simple, involving two beam splitters and a reference field in a

Predictions from Quantum Cosmology
The world view suggested by quantum cosmology is that inflating universes
with all possible values of the fundamental constants are spontaneously created
out of nothing. I explore the consequences of the assumption that we are a
`typical' civilization living in this metauniverse. The conclusions include
inflation with an extremely flat potential and low thermalization temperature,
structure formation by topological defects, and an appreciable cosmological

STRUCTURE OF METHYLPHEOPHORBIDE-RCI
he methanolic extract of the cyanobacterium (blue-green alga) Spirulina geitleri has been treated with methanolic acid to convert all chlorophyllous pigments to their methylpheophorbides. Fractionation of the latter from methylpheophorbide a by thin layer chromatography and high pressure liquid chromatography yielded methylpheophorbide-RCI. Its structure has been determined as 132S-hydroxy-20-chloro-methylpheophorbide a by 1H-nuclear magnetic resonance, absorption and circular dichroism spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and by partial synthesis from chlorophyll a. The pigment is isolated from Spirulina geitleri irrespective of the use or omission of chlorinated substances during the isolation procedure
