Random Field Models for Relaxor Ferroelectric Behavior
Heat bath Monte Carlo simulations have been used to study a four-state clock
model with a type of random field on simple cubic lattices. The model has the
standard nonrandom two-spin exchange term with coupling energy and a random
field which consists of adding an energy to one of the four spin states,
chosen randomly at each site. This Ashkin-Teller-like model does not separate;
the two random-field Ising model components are coupled. When , the
ground states of the model remain fully aligned. When , a
different type of ground state is found, in which the occupation of two of the
four spin states is close to 50%, and the other two are nearly absent. This
means that one of the Ising components is almost completely ordered, while the
other one has only short-range correlations. A large peak in the structure
factor appears at small for temperatures well above the transition
to long-range order, and the appearance of this peak is associated with slow,
"glassy" dynamics. The phase transition into the state where one Ising
component is long-range ordered appears to be first order, but the latent heat

Topological Defects in the Random-Field XY Model and the Pinned Vortex Lattice to Vortex Glass Transition in Type-II Superconductors
As a simplified model of randomly pinned vortex lattices or charge-density
waves, we study the random-field XY model on square () and simple cubic
() lattices. We verify in Monte Carlo simulations, that the average
spacing between topological defects (vortices) diverges more strongly than the
Imry-Ma pinning length as the random field strength, , is reduced. We
suggest that for the simulation data are consistent with a topological
phase transition at a nonzero critical field, , to a pinned phase that is
defect-free at large length-scales. We also discuss the connection between the
possible existence of this phase transition in the random-field XY model and
the magnetic field driven transition from pinned vortex lattice to vortex glass

The roles of the formal and informal sectors in the provision of effective science education
For many years, formal school science education has been criticised by students, teachers, parents and employers throughout the world. This article presents an argument that a greater collaboration between the formal and the informal sector could address some of these criticisms. The causes for concern about formal science education are summarised and the major approaches being taken to address them are outlined. The contributions that the informal sector currently makes to science education are identified. It is suggested that the provision of an effective science education entails an enhanced complementarity between the two sectors. Finally, there is a brief discussion of the collaboration and communication still needed if this is to be effective
Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sanguinis Colonization Correlated with Caries Experience in Children
The aim of this study was to examine the colonization of Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sanguinis in the oral cavity and the association with severe early childhood caries (S-ECC). Saliva and plaque samples were collected from 14 S-ECC children and 8 caries-free (CF) children. All S-ECC children were S. mutans positive; 100% of CF children and 93% of S-ECC children were S. sanguinis positive. The children's caries severity was positively correlated with levels of S. mutans (p < 0.001), total oral streptococci (p < 0.01), total cultivable oral bacteria (p < 0.05), and children's age (p < 0.05). Logistic regression analysis showed that the interaction of S. sanguinis with S. mutans was a significant factor associated with the caries status in children, suggesting that the relative levels of these two microorganisms in the oral cavity play an important role in caries development
No apparent involvement of the FMR1 gene in five patients with phenotypic manifestations of the fragile X syndrome
Most fragile X patients have a significant increase in the number of CGG repeats in the FMR1 gene. Two patients were described with a deletion and one patient with a point mutation in the FMR1 gene. We describe 5 patients with a fragile X or Martin-Bell phenotype. Two brothers were discordant for the region containing the FMR1 gene; if there is a common cause for the mental retardation this is not located in the FMR1 gene. In the other 3 patients the expression of the FMR1 gene was found to be normal and no abnormalities were noted in the FMR1 mRNA. No amplification was found in the GCC repeat which is associated with the fragile site FRAXE. We conclude that the Martin-Bell phenotype can also be caused by mutations outside the FMRl gene. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc
