Catalytic enantioselective syn hydration of enones in water using a DNA-based catalyst
The enantioselective addition of water to olefins in an aqueous environment is a common transformation in biological systems, but was beyond the ability of synthetic chemists. Here, we present the first examples of a non-enzymatic catalytic enantioselective hydration of enones, for which we used a catalyst that comprises a copper complex, based on an achiral ligand, non-covalently bound to (deoxy)ribonucleic acid, which is the only source of chirality present under the reaction conditions. The chiral β-hydroxy ketone product was obtained in up to 82% enantiomeric excess. Deuterium-labelling studies demonstrated that the reaction is diastereospecific, with only the syn hydration product formed. So far, this diastereospecific and enantioselective reaction had no equivalent in conventional homogeneous catalysis
Scientific Discovery Through Fictionally Modelling Reality
How do scientific models represent in a way that enables us to discover new truths about reality and draw inferences about it? Contemporary accounts of scientific discovery answer this question by focusing on the cognitive mechanisms involved in the generation of new ideas and concepts in terms of a special sort of reasoning—or model-based reasoning—involving imagery. Alternatively, I argue that answering this question requires that we recognise the crucial role of the propositional imagination in the construction and development of models for the purpose of generating hypotheses that are plausible can- didates for truth. I propose simple fictionalism as a new account of models as Waltonian games of make-believe and suggest that models can lead to genuine scientific discovery when they are used as representations that denote real world phenomena and generate two main kinds of theoretical hypotheses, model-world comparisons and direct attributions

Genetic analysis of tha flaA locus of Bacillus subtilis
We isolated two clones of recombinant lambda bacteriophage with overlapping inserts of Bacillus subtilis chromosomal DNA corresponding to part of the flaA locus. The flaA4 and flaA15 mutations were localized on the physical map by marker rescue experiments. The flaA locus and the flaB (sigD) gene were mapped in transduction crosses, and the order glnA polC flaB flaA was determined. FlaB was linked to polC in transformation crosse
