Multilevel modelling of refusal and noncontact nonresponse in household surveys: evidence from six UK government surveys
This paper analyses household unit nonresponse and interviewer effects in six major UK government surveys using a multilevel multinomial modelling approach. The models are guided by current conceptual frameworks and theories of survey participation. One key feature of the analysis is the investigation of survey dependent and independent effects of household and interviewer characteristics, providing an empirical exploration of the leverage-salience theory. The analysis is based on the 2001 UK Census Link Study, a unique data source containing an unusually rich set of auxiliary variables, linking the response outcome of six surveys to census data, interviewer observation data and interviewer information, available for respondents and nonrespondents
Alternative approaches to multilevel modelling of survey noncontact and refusal
We review three alternative approaches to modelling survey noncontact and refusal: multinomial, sequential and sample selection (bivariate probit) models. We then propose a multilevel extension of the sample selection model to allow for both interviewer effects and dependency between noncontact and refusal rates at the household and interviewer level. All methods are applied and compared in an analysis of household nonresponse in the UK, using a dataset with unusually rich information on both respondents and nonrespondents from six major surveys. After controlling for household characteristics, there is little evidence of residual correlation between the unobserved characteristics affecting noncontact and refusal propensities at either the household or the interviewer level. We also find that the estimated coefficients of the multinomial and sequential models are surprisingly similar, which further investigation via a simulation study suggests is due to there being little overlap between the predictors of noncontact and refusal
The Global City as a Space for Transnational Identity Politics
Global Cities are key nodes in circuits of transnational political activity. As dense spaces of political interaction, cities provide bundles of material, political and ideational resources that allow for the generation of new identities and frames of meaning, shifts in tactical and strategic alliances, and network brokerage activities. The key function of cities in facilitating transnationalism has not been adequately explored in the existing International Relations literature on transnationalism. In this paper, we use the case of London as a Global City to examine how its features as a dense institutional context; a node in multiple global networks; and as a resource-rich environment creates a creative space for innovations in transnational politics. We focus on the strategies employed by identity-based transnational political entrepreneurs and discuss four mechanisms of mobilization: brokerage (the linking of disparate networks), strategic framing (the use of symbolic politics), coalition-building (the forging of alliances between organizations) and social learning or mediated diffusion (the adoption of new ideas and practices). Our analysis challenges both standard state-centric and single-case study accounts of transnational activity, suggesting a novel site of investigation for IR scholars
Breakdown of the Equal Area Law for Holographic Entanglement Entropy
We investigate a holographic version of Maxwell's equal area law analogous to
that for the phase transition in the black hole temperature/black hole entropy
plane of a charged AdS black hole. We consider proposed area laws for both the
black hole temperature/holographic entanglement entropy plane and the black
hole temperature/2-point correlation function plane. Despite recent claims to
the contrary, we demonstrate numerically that neither proposal is valid. We
argue that there is no physical reason to expect such a construction in these

Predicting Studentsâ Physical Activity and Health-Related Well-Being: A Prospective Cross-Domain Investigation of Motivation Across School Physical Education and Exercise Settings \ud
A three-wave prospective design was used to assess a model of motivation guided by self-determination theory (Ryan & Deci, 2008) spanning the contexts of school physical education (PE) and exercise. The outcome variables examined were health-related quality of life (HRQoL), physical self-concept (PSC), and 4 days of objectively assessed estimates of activity. Secondary school students (n = 494) completed questionnaires at three separate time points and were familiarized with how to use a sealed pedometer. Results of structural equation modeling supported a model in which perceptions of autonomy support from a PE teacher positively predicted PE-related need satisfaction (autonomy, competence, and relatedness). Competence predicted PSC, whereas relatedness predicted HRQoL. Autonomy and competence positively predicted autonomous motivation toward PE, which in turn positively predicted autonomous motivation toward exercise (i.e., 4-day pedometer step count). Autonomous motivation toward exercise positively predicted step count, HRQoL, and PSC. Results of multisample structural equation modeling supported gender invariance.
