The Polytope of Optimal Approximate Designs

For many statistical experiments, there exists a multitude of optimal designs. If we consider models with uncorrelated observations and adopt the approach of approximate experimental design, the set of all optimal designs typically forms a multivariate polytope. In this paper, we mathematically characterize the polytope of optimal designs. In particular, we show that its vertices correspond to the so-called minimal optimum designs. Consequently, we compute the vertices for several classical multifactor regression models of the first and the second degree. To this end, we use software tools based on rational arithmetic; therefore, the computed list is accurate and complete. The polytope of optimal experimental designs, and its vertices, can be applied in several ways. For instance, it can aid in constructing cost-efficient and efficient exact designs

A Randomized Exchange Algorithm for Computing Optimal Approximate Designs of Experiments

We propose a class of subspace ascent methods for computing optimal approximate designs that covers both existing as well as new and more efficient algorithms. Within this class of methods, we construct a simple, randomized exchange algorithm (REX). Numerical comparisons suggest that the performance of REX is comparable or superior to the performance of state-of-the-art methods across a broad range of problem structures and sizes. We focus on the most commonly used criterion of D-optimality that also has applications beyond experimental design, such as the construction of the minimum volume ellipsoid containing a given set of data-points. For D-optimality, we prove that the proposed algorithm converges to the optimum. We also provide formulas for the optimal exchange of weights in the case of the criterion of A-optimality. These formulas enable one to use REX for computing A-optimal and I-optimal designs.Comment: 23 pages, 2 figure

Czechoslovak emigrants in Bonn in the 80s of the 20th century

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá problematikou života emigrantů z Československa ve Spolkové republice Německo (SRN) v 80. letech 20. století. V teoretické části jsou popsány základní problémy související s tématem emigrace z Československa s důrazem na období tzv. normalizace. Dále je zde nastíněn vztah mezi Československem a SRN v tomto období. Praktická část se pak zaměřuje hlavně na vzpomínky pamětníků, kteří odešli do emigrace a žili v Bonnu v 80. letech 20. století. Bonn, jakožto dočasné hlavní město SRN bylo jedním z nejvýznamnějších center československé emigrace, a také proto zde sídlila rezidentura československé rozvědky, která činnost československých emigrantů sledovala.This diploma thesis analyses life of emigrants from Czechoslovakia in Federal Republic of Germany in the 1980s of the 20th century. The theoretical part describes the basic problems related to the issue of emigration from Czechoslovakia with emphasis on the period of so-called normalization. Then there is outlined the relationship between Czechoslovakia and Germany during this period. The practical part focuses mainly on the memories of witnesses who went to emigration and lived in Bonn in the 1980s. As a temporary capital of Germany, Bonn was one of the most important centers of Czechoslovak emigration, and that is why the residency of the Czechoslovak intelligence service was located there and pursued the activities of Czechoslovak emigrants
