    Effects of Dieldrin on the Social Interactions of Penned Pheasants and Chickens

    Studies to determine the effects of dieldrin on social hierarchy of pheasants and chickens were initiated in 1970. Social interactions were observed among groups of pheasant chicks, adult cock and hen pheasants and peck-order development among groups of young pheasants. To determine the effects of dieldrin on the pecking behavior of individual birds, pairs of pheasants and pairs of chickens were placed in a neutral cage. When patterns of dominance and subordination were consistent, dieldrin in capsules (4 mg to pheasants and 6 and 10 mg to chickens twice weekly) was given to one member of each pair and birds were observed ·for changes in pecking behavior. Toward the end of the study, one bird from each of the pheasant chick groups was given 4 mg of dieldrin twice a week. Fights were observed among pheasant chicks at 3 weeks of age, and it was concluded that aggressive behavior and peck-order development began at this time. Only in smaller groups (two to five birds) could a rank be determined based on the total number of each individual\u27s interactions. Groups of adult pheasants also displayed peck-orders, usually not linear. Weight, previous dieldrin treatment parental dieldrin treatment and ear tuft length had no effect on the peck-orders. There were no correlations between sex and rank in the pheasant chick, groups. Dominance-subordination patterns of pheasants and chickens were not affected by dieldrin administration. Although a few reversals of peck order occurred, none were statistically significant

    EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: At present, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) criteria used to assess whether a population qualifies for inclusion in the CITES Appendices relate to (A) size of the population, (B) area of distribution of the population, and (C) declines in the size of the population. Numeric guidelines are provided as indicators of a small population (less than 5,000 individuals), a small subpopulation (less than 500 individuals), a restricted area of distribution for a population (less than 10,000 km2), a restricted area of distribution for a subpopula-tion (less than 500 km2), a high rate of decline (a decrease of 50% or more in total within 5 years or two generations whichever is longer or, for a small wild population, a decline of 20% or more in total within ten years or three generations whichever is longer), large fluctuations (population size or area of distribution varies widely, rapidly and frequently, with a variation greater than one order of magnitude), and a short-term fluctuation (one of two years or less). The Working Group discussed several broad issues of relevance to the CITES criteria and guidelines. These included the importance of the historical extent of decline versus the recent rate of decline; the utility and validity of incorporating relative population productivity into decline criteria; the utility of absolute numbers for defining small populations or small areas; the appropriateness of generation times as time frames for examining declines; the importance of the magnitude and frequency of fluctuations as factors affecting risk of extinction; and the overall utility of numeric thresh-olds or guidelines

    The conduct of research as guided by philosophical tenets of hermeneutics, in particular the hermeneutics of Hans-Georg Gadamer, is a complex and sophisticated endeavor. In this paper, we offer that one of the things that guides the inquiry is the topic and that most often topics for discovery arrive with the experience of an address. We discuss the notion of the address of the topic, how a researcher discerns a topic to be studied and, from this address, develops appropriate research questions that help to inform how the study will be conducted

    Factors associated with participation in life situations for adults with stroke: a systematic review

    Objectives: To identify biopsychosocial factors associated with participation outcomes for adults with stroke and to investigate factors associated with participation at different time points post stroke. Data sources: Medline, CINAHL, AMED, PyschINFO and Web of Science were systematically searched using key words “stroke”, “participation” and “outcomes” and their synonyms on 15th May 2017. Study selection: Observational studies reporting on biopsychosocial factors and participation outcomes for community dwelling adults with stroke were selected. Studies were eligible for inclusion if participation outcomes were measured using indices that mapped to the participation domain of the ICF. Intervention studies were excluded. A second reviewer checked all studies against eligibility criteria at each stage. Data extraction: Data were extracted on any statistically determined association between biopsychosocial factors and participation outcomes. Data synthesis: The proportion of studies reporting significant associations with variables were classified according to the ICF. The exact binomial test was used to determine the probability that the proportion of studies reporting significant associations was due to chance alone. Qualitative descriptive summaries of each study allowed consideration of interactions between variables and changes in participation over time points. Conclusions: Whilst depressive symptoms, cognitive functioning and mobility were found to have the strongest associations with participation, we found that other frequently occurring factors (such as fatigue and environmental factors) were less extensively considered. The diversity of outcome measures encountered within the review highlight the need for a consensus on a core set of outcome measures to evaluate long term participation in life situations after stroke

    The Association Between Low Health Literacy and Attitudes, Behaviors and Knowledge that Influence Engagement in Cancer Screening and Prevention Activities

    Background: Health literacy is a complex, multifaceted phenomenon. While health literacy has historically been measured using instruments that assess reading and numeracy, comprehension of spoken information is also important. The purpose of this study was to identify adults with low health literacy using a multi-dimensional assessment of health literacy and to explore whether low health literacy was associated with variables likely to affect engagement in cancer prevention and screening activities. Methods: A random sample of English speaking adults aged 40-70 were invited to participate from: Kaiser Permanente Georgia, Hawaii, Colorado, and Fallon Community Health Plan Massachusetts. The Cancer Message Literacy Test-Listening, the Cancer Message Literacy Test-Reading, and the Lipkus Numeracy Scale were all used to assess aspects of health literacy. We also assessed self-efficacy, provider trust, and fatalism. Participants self-reported demographic data, health seeking behavior, and media use. Results: Out of 1074 adults, 48% were white, 73% were educated beyond high school, and 53% rated their health as very good or excellent. Compared to others, adults with low health literacy were more likely to avoid physician visits (p \u3c .001), more fatalistic about cancer (p Conclusions: In this population of insured adults, we identified differences among adults with low health literacy which may impact their engagement in cancer prevention and screening activities. These findings have important implications for health care interactions and public health communication. Understanding the reasons for these beliefs and behaviors may suggest ways to target and tailor communication for this vulnerable population

    The association between health literacy and cancer-related attitudes, behaviors, and knowledge

    Using a multidimensional assessment of health literacy (the Cancer Message Literacy Test-Listening, the Cancer Message Literacy Test-Reading, and the Lipkus Numeracy Scale), the authors assessed a stratified random sample of 1013 insured adults (40-70 years of age). The authors explored whether low health literacy across all 3 domains (n =111) was associated with sets of variables likely to affect engagement in cancer prevention and screening activities: (a) attitudes and behaviors relating to health care encounters and providers, (b) attitudes toward cancer and health, (c) knowledge of cancer screening tests, and (d) attitudes toward health related media and actual media use. Adults with low health literacy were more likely to report avoiding doctor\u27s visits, to have more fatalistic attitudes toward cancer, to be less accurate in identifying the purpose of cancer screening tests, and more likely to avoid information about diseases they did not have. Compared with other participants, those with lower health literacy were more likely to say that they would seek information about cancer prevention or screening from a health care professional and less likely to turn to the Internet first for such information. Those with lower health literacy reported reading on fewer days and using the computer on fewer days than did other participants. The authors assessed the association of low health literacy with colorectal cancer screening in an age-appropriate subgroup for which colorectal cancer screening is recommended. In these insured subjects receiving care in integrated health care delivery systems, those with low health literacy were less likely to be up to date on screening for colorectal cancer, but the difference was not statistically significant
