The Indirect Limit on the Standard Model Higgs Boson Mass from the Precision FERMILAB, LEP and SLD Data

    Get PDF
Standard Model fits are performed on the most recent leptonic and b quark Z decay data from LEP and SLD, and FERMILAB data on top quark production, to obtain mtm_t and mHm_H. Poor fits are obtained, with confidence levels ≃\simeq 2%. Removing the b quark data improves markedly the quality of the fits and reduces the 95% CL upper limit on mHm_H by ≃\simeq 50 GeV.Comment: 6 pages 3 tables i figur

Brief Amici Curiae of Intellectual Property Professors in Support of Petitoner

Congress enacted the Administrative Procedure Act (APA) in 1946 as a comprehensive statute to regulate the field of federal administrative law. In holding that the PTO Board of Patent Appeals and Interferences is not subject to the standards of judicial review set forth in the APA, the [Zurko] decision isolates patent law from the rest of administrative law and undermines the APA’s goal of achieving consistency and uniformity in federal administrative law

Higgs boson production with one bottom quark including higher-order soft-gluon corrections

A Higgs boson produced in association with one or more bottom quarks is of great theoretical and experimental interest to the high-energy community. A precise prediction of its total and differential cross-section can have a great impact on the discovery of a Higgs boson with large bottom-quark Yukawa coupling, like the scalar (h^0 and H^0) and pseudoscalar (A^0) Higgs bosons of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) in the region of large \tan\beta. In this paper we apply the threshold resummation formalism to determine both differential and total cross-sections for b g \to b\Phi (where \Phi = h^0, H^0), including up to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (NNNLO) soft plus virtual QCD corrections at next-to-leading logarithmic (NLL) accuracy. We present results for both the Fermilab Tevatron and the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC).Comment: revtex4, 13 pages, 11 figures; new references and additional comment

Symmetry breaking in MAST plasma turbulence due to toroidal flow shear

The flow shear associated with the differential toroidal rotation of tokamak plasmas breaks an underlying symmetry of the turbulent fluctuations imposed by the up-down symmetry of the magnetic equilibrium. Using experimental Beam-Emission-Spectroscopy (BES) measurements and gyrokinetic simulations, this symmetry breaking in ion-scale turbulence in MAST is shown to manifest itself as a tilt of the spatial correlation function and a finite skew in the distribution of the fluctuating density field. The tilt is a statistical expression of the "shearing" of the turbulent structures by the mean flow. The skewness of the distribution is related to the emergence of long-lived density structures in sheared, near-marginal plasma turbulence. The extent to which these effects are pronounced is argued (with the aid of the simulations) to depend on the distance from the nonlinear stability threshold. Away from the threshold, the symmetry is effectively restored

The etiology, morbid anatomy and bacteriology of scarlatina

Scarlatina has been known to the medical profession for upwards of six- hundred years, and one is almost tempted to say that our present knowledge of the cause of the disease is as limited as it was in the time of Michael Scotus (1250 D), Ingrassia (1560 D), Gregor Horst (1624 D), and other physicians of the early periods of medical science. (2) According to Hirsch the disease must have been known as a separate one for many years before it was described by the medical profession, and this seems not improbable. In the earliest description Measles and Erysipelas were classed with the disease; and those diseases occurring in conjunction with it were looked upon as types. It is to Sydenham and Morton that we are indebted for its earliest description, and there can be little doubt that it is a disease which possesses characters entirely its own
