Dynamic structure factor of a superfluid Fermi gas

We describe the excitation spectrum of a two-component neutral Fermi gas in the superfluid phase at finite temperature by deriving a suitable Random-Phase approximation with the technique of functional derivatives. The obtained spectrum for the homogeneous gas at small wavevectors contains the Bogoliubov-Anderson phonon and is essentially different from the spectrum predicted by the static Bogoliubov theory, which instead shows an unphysically large response. We adapt the results for the homogeneous system to obtain the dynamic structure factor of a harmonically confined superfluid and we identify in the spectrum a unique feature of the superfluid phase.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figure

Symmetric simple exclusion process with free boundaries

We consider the one dimensional symmetric simple exclusion process (SSEP) with additional births and deaths restricted to a subset of configurations where there is a leftmost hole and a rightmost particle. At a fixed rate birth of particles occur at the position of the leftmost hole and at the same rate, independently, the rightmost particle dies. We prove convergence to a hydrodynamic limit and discuss its relation with a free boundary problem.Comment: 29 pages, 4 figure

“Message Queens”: Aids Protest Literature, the Gay Community and Writing as a Political Act

    Get PDF
The explosion of the AIDS epidemic in the early Eighties, and the subsequent position the gay community found itself in, brought the need for writers to become politically engaged. The protest against the institutions took different forms and activism was interpreted differently from different authors. Larry Kramer was very political and attacked both the government and the gay community, David Feinberg was aggressive but preferred humor as a weapon to protest, while Sarah Schulman chose a purer form of fiction and alongside the epidemic narrated the protests and the process of gentrification in the Village area. All these literary texts, and many more, have contributed to save and shape both gay culture and the gay community

    Krokodil: The drug that kills

    Get PDF
Psychotropic substances use and abuse have become a real global problem. Up to now, heroin is still one of the most abused drugs, however its consumption is in sharp decline in favor of Krokodil, also called “the poor’s heroine”. Krokodil originates from codeine that is extracted from antitussive and analgesic drugs, in “improvised” rudimentary laboratories and through artisan synthetic routes. Its low cost and easy procurement have allowed its rapid and dangerous spread. The objective of this paper was to describe the epidemiology, chemistry, synthesis and toxicology of Krokodil

Risk Sharing and the Adoption of the Euro

This paper empirically evaluates whether adopting a common currency has changed the level of consumption smoothing of euro area member states. We construct a counterfactual dataset of macroeconomic variables through the synthetic control method. We then use the output variance decomposition of Asdrubali, Sorensen and Yosha (1996) on both the actual and the synthetic data to study if there has been a change in risk sharing and through which channels. We find that the euro adoption has reduced risk sharing and consumption smoothing. We further show that this reduction is mainly driven by the periphery countries of the euro area who have experienced a decrease in risk sharing through private credit

This resource of mediation (SOMIA) is one of the three pioneering and innovating services in familiar mediation in Spanish. Its fundamental purpose is to carry out a preventive action that helps to cause listening and to improve the communication between the members of the family. The new forms of conflict that generates the complexity of the current society also affect the familiar context. Learning to develop strategies to manage and to solve conflicts from a positive perspective, will help to analyze the causes that generate the conflict situations and of violence while that will improve the familiar climate

Effects of field inoculation with VAM and bacteria consortia on root growth and nutrients uptake in common wheat

This study investigated the effects of a commercial biofertilizer containing the mycorrhizal fungus Rhizophagus irregularis and the diazotrophic N-fixing bacterium Azotobacter vinelandii on root and shoot growth, yield, and nutrient uptake in common wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) in order to improve the sustainable cultivation of this widespread crop. The trials were carried out in controlled conditions (rhizoboxes) and in open fields over two years to investigate the interaction between inoculation and three doses of nitrogen fertilization (160, 120 and 80 kg ha1) in a silty-loam soil of the Po Plain (NE Italy). In rhizoboxes, efficient root colonization by R. irregularis was observed at 50 days after sowing with seed inoculation, together with improved root tip density and branching (+~30% vs. controls), while the effects of post-emergence inoculation by soil and foliar spraying were not observable at plant sampling. In the open, field spraying at end tillering significantly increased the volumetric root length density (RLD, +22% vs. controls) and root area density (+18%) after about two months (flowering stage) in both years under medium and high N fertilization doses, but not at the lowest N dose. In absence of inoculation, RLD progressively decreased with increased N doses. Inoculation had a negligible effect on grain yield and N uptake, which followed a typical N dose-response model, while straw Zn, P, and K concentrations were seldom improved. It is concluded that medium-high N fertilization doses are required to achieve the target yield and standards of quality (protein contents) in wheat cultivation, while the use of this mixed VAM-PGPR biofertilizer appears to be a sustainable mean for minimizing the adverse effects of chemical N fertilizers on root expansion and for improving the uptake of low-mobility nutrients, which has potentially relevant environmental benefits
