    Distances of the TeV SNR complex CTB 37 towards the Galactic Bar

    Three supernova remnants form the CTB 37 complex: CTB 37A (G348.5+0.1, associated with the TeV γ\gamma-ray source HESS J1714-385), CTB 37B (G348.7+0.3, associated with HESS J1713-381 and the magnetar CXOU J171405.7.381031), and G348.5-0.0. We use 21 cm HI absorption measurements to constrain the kinematic distances to these SNRs, which have not previously been determined well. We revise the kinematic distance for CTB 37A to be in the range 6.3 to 9.5 kpc (previously \sim11.3 kpc) because it is beyond the near 3-kpc arm and in front of the far side of the CO cloud at -145 km s1^{-1} towards ll=348.5. G348.5-0.0 has a HI column density (NHI_{HI} 6.1×1021\sim6.1\times10^{21} cm2^{-2}) lower than CTB 37A (\sim7.1\time10^{21} cm2^{-2}). Also, G348.5-0.0 does not have the major absorption feature at -107 km s1^{-1} that CTB 37A shows. This is caused by the near 3-kpc arm, so G348.5-0.0 is at a distance of \le 6.3 kpc. CTB 37B is at a distance of \sim13.2 kpc (previously 5 to 9 kpc) based on: 1) it has an absorption feature at -10±\pm5 km s1^{-1} from the far 3-kpc arm, so CTB 37B is behind it; 2) there is absorption at -30 km s1^{-1} but not at -26 km s1^{-1}, which yields the distance value; 3) the HI column density towards CTB 37B (8.3×1021\sim8.3\times10^{21} cm2^{-2}) is larger than CTB 37A. In summary, CTB 37A, CTB 37B and G348.5+0.0 are all at different distances and are only by chance nearby each other on the sky. In addition, we conclude that CTB 37 A and B are not associated with the historical Supernova AD 393.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figs. Accepted by MNRA

    SPON1 is associated with amyloid-β and APOE ϵ4-related cognitive decline in cognitively normal adults

    Background: Genetic variation in Spondin-1, specifically rs11023139, has been associated with reduced rates of cognitive decline in individuals with Alzheimer\u27s disease. Objective: The aim of this study was to assess whether the association was present in cognitively normal older adults. Methods: Longitudinal cognitive decline was investigated using linear mixed modelling in a cohort of 590 cognitively normal older adults enrolled in the Australian Imaging, Biomarkers and Lifestyle Study. Results: No independent effect of Spondin-1 rs11023139 on cognitive decline was observed. However, significant associations were observed for the interaction between Apolipoprotein E (APOE) ϵ4 and rs11023139 in individuals with high amyloid-β burden. APOE ϵ4/rs11023139-A carriers declined significantly faster than APOE ϵ4/rs11023139-G-G carriers in measures of global cognition (p=0.011) and verbal episodic memory (p=0.020). Conclusion: These results suggest that carriage of the Spondin-1 rs11023139-A allele significantly contributes to a worsening of cognitive performance in APOE ϵ4 cognitively normal older adults with a high neocortical amyloid-β burden

    This paper investigates some productive ambiguities around the medical administration of methadone in the Republic of Ireland. The tensions surrounding methadone maintenance therapy (MMT) are outlined, as well as the sociohistorical context in which a serious heroin addiction problem in Ireland developed. Irish psychiatry intervened in this situation, during a time of institutional change, debates concerning the nature of addiction, moral panics concerning heroin addiction in Irish society and the recent boom in the Irish economy, known popularly as the Celtic Tiger. A particular history of this sort illuminates how technologies like MMT become cosmopolitan, settling into, while changing, local contexts

    Visible to infrared diamond photonics enabled by focused femtosecond laser pulses

    Diamond's nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers show great promise in sensing applications and quantum computing due to their long electron spin coherence time and because they can be found, manipulated, and read out optically. An important step forward for diamond photonics would be connecting multiple diamond NVs together using optical waveguides. However, the inertness of diamond is a significant hurdle for the fabrication of integrated optics similar to those that revolutionized silicon photonics. In this work, we show the fabrication of optical waveguides in diamond, enabled by focused femtosecond high repetition rate laser pulses. By optimizing the geometry of the waveguide, we obtain single mode waveguides from the visible to the infrared. Additionally, we show the laser writing of individual NV centers within the bulk of diamond. We use μ-Raman spectroscopy to gain better insight on the stress and the refractive index profile of the optical waveguides. Using optically detected magnetic resonance and confocal photoluminescence characterization, high quality NV properties are observed in waveguides formed in various grades of diamond, making them promising for applications such as magnetometry, quantum information systems, and evanescent field sensors

    Improvements in vascular health by a low-fat diet, but not a high-fat diet, are mediated by changes in adipocyte biology

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Low-fat (LF) and high-fat (HF) weight loss diets improve brachial artery flow-mediated dilation (FMD) in obese individuals, although results are conflicting. Moreover, the role that adipose tissue plays in mediating these diet-related effects are unknown.</p> <p>Objective</p> <p>This study examined how modulations in FMD by HF and LF diets relate to changes in adipocyte parameters.</p> <p>Design</p> <p>Obese subjects (n = 17) were randomized to a HF diet (60% kcal as fat) or a LF diet (25% kcal as fat) for 6 weeks. Both groups were restricted by 25% of energy needs.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Body weight decreased (<it>P <</it>0.05) in both groups (HF: -6.6 ± 0.5 kg, LF: -4.7 ± 0.6 kg). Fat mass and waist circumference were reduced (<it>P <</it>0.05) in the LF group only (-4.4 ± 0.3 kg; -3.6 ± 0.8 cm, respectively). FMD improved (<it>P <</it>0.05) in the LF group (7.4 ± 0.8% to 9.8 ± 0.8; 32% increase) and was impaired in the HF group (8.5 ± 0.6% to 6.9 ± 0.7; 19% reduction). Increases in plasma adiponectin (<it>P <</it>0.05, 16 ± 5%), and decreases in resistin (<it>P <</it>0.05, -26 ± 11%), were shown by the LF diet only. Greater decreases in leptin were observed with LF (-48 ± 9%) versus HF (-28 ± 12%) (<it>P <</it>0.05, diet × time). Increased FMD by the LF diet was associated with increased adiponectin, and decreased fat mass, waist circumference, leptin, and resistin.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Beneficial modulations in vascular health by LF diets may be mediated by improvements in adipocyte parameters.</p
