What do bean, broccoli and tomatoes have in common?
Position Paper of the Horizon 2020 project BRESOV (Breeding for Resilient, Efficient and Sustainable Organic Vegetable production
POLICY BRIEF ON ORGANIC VEGETABLE PRODUCTIONIN EUROPE
This policy brief showcases the main findings of the H2020 project BRESOV and gives key policy recommendations based on its research results.
The BRESOV consortium's overall aim was to increase the plants' tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses and to increase the sensorial and nutraceutical traits of the products by providing new sources of genetic variation together with derived improved breeding materials suited to low-input organic growing systems. A multi-actor approach ensured the necessary cross-disciplinary interactions between researchers, businesses, farmers/producers, food industries, consumers, NGOs,advisors, and end-users
Seed germination protocol for small seed lots of cauliflower and broccoli
For 150 seed. Seed are divided into three lots of Fifty seed and placed in three aluminium containers
containing absorbent paper made wet, without flooding using distilled water.
The seed are covered by absorbent paper and the
aluminium containers will be placed at room temperature
in the dark (optimal temperature ~20°C). Seedling
assessment takes place at the cotyledon disclosure when
the first true leaf appears.
Each day after sowing the number of germinated seed
are recorded and seedlings will be removed afterwards.
After 12 days calculate the percentage germination
(seed quality = percentage of seeds providing seedlings
in comparison to the total number of seeds) and the
germination time (days) of the seed lots
Aortic arch branching pattern variation: its incidence on a 20.030 cases review.
Aim of the study: the main objective of this work was to study the frequency of variation of the aortic arch branching pattern in a wide and varied population. Introduction: Variations in the branching pattern of the aortic arch are clinically relevant because of the direct influence that their presence can have on the success of cardio-vascular procedures, neck or thorax surgery, in trauma management or in intensive care unit patient’s. In most cases these anatomical variations are asymptomatic and considered clinically benign, but some particular aortic branching patterns had been associated with surgical complications or with vascular diseases in medical non surgical patients. Methods: this paper analyzes the aortic arch branching patterns of 20.030 cases reported by 40 anatomical or radiological studies. Results: 84,52% of the studied population has a three branches pattern and 14,65% has a two branches pattern. The four primary arteries arising directly from the aortic arch were seen in 0,81% of the cases and only 0,02% had them all arising from a common trunk
Tomato: Seed treatment for organic agriculture
In organic farming, where chemical solutions cannot be
applied, products based on microbial consortia (MCs) and
natural compounds (NCs) are currently being studied as
sustainable alternatives
Analisi tecnico-economica di alcuni ecotipi locali di specie orticole in Sicilia
The horticultural sector, that assumes a socio-economic role of great interest for different sicilian areals has, in addition to the international species and variety, also an high number of autochthonous species and varieties, expression of the cultural tradition and local production, which assume considerable importance with respect to the territory of origin, because they are able to generate income and employment and to activate predominantly a question provincial and/or regional, for the limited production. For these local Sicilian cultivars, it’s necessary to broaden the technical-economic management knowledge starting from seed and seedlings activities, located upstream of the production phase. The study's aim is to provide a survey on some species and seed varieties, expression of the sicilian local horticultural heritage (Cavolfiore violetto “Natalino”, Cavolo rapa di Acireale, ecc.), implanted at the "field study" activated in eastern Sicily and at production units available to launch pilot projects on propagation sicilian material
Antioxidant support to ameliorate the oxaliplatin-dependent microglial alteration: morphological and molecular study
Oxaliplatin is a third-generation chemotherapy drug mainly used for colorectal cancer treatment. However, it is also known to trigger neuropathy whose underlying neurobiological mechanisms are still under investigation and currently available treatments show limited efficacy. It is now established that neurons are not the only cell type involved in chronic pain and that glial cells, mainly microglia and astrocytes, are implicated in the initiation and maintenance of neuropathy. Among all the pathogenetic factors involved in neuropathic pain, an oxaliplatin- dependent oxidative stress plays a predominant role. In our study, the antioxidant properties of magnesium (Mg), manganese (Mn) and zinc (Zn) salts were evaluated in order to counteract microglial activation induced by oxaliplatin. The antioxidant efficacy of these metals was evaluated by means of molecular and morphological assays on the BV-2 microglial cell line. Our data clearly show that Mg, Mn and Zn salts are able to prevent oxaliplatin-dependent microglial alterations by reducing both oxidative and endoplasmic reticulum stress
The foot, Anatomy notes
The foot has 28 bones, 30 joints, and more than 100 muscles, ligaments, and tendons. These structures work together to carry out two main functions: weight-bearing and propulsion. Plus, the foot must be flexible to adapt to uneven surfaces and remain stable. In this article, we briefly illustrate the anatomy of the foot and its various structures
